The original Buena Vista Social Club album was recorded for World Circuit Records over six days at the vintage EGREM studios in Havana. Released in 1997, the album went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over 8 million copies and contributing to the rise in popularity of Cuban, as well as Latin American, music.
Since forming in London in the mid-1980s, World Circuit Records has made its reputation by producing some of the finest albums of the past three decades. The label’s prestigious roster includes Buena Vista Social Club and associated solo artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Orlando ‘Cachaíto’ López), Malian blues pioneer Ali Farka Touré, Malian divas and social activists Oumou Sangaré and Fatoumata Diawara, master kora player Toumani Diabaté, the illustrious Orchestra Baobab, musical iconoclast Cheikh Lô, and Fela Kuti’s legendary drummer and co-creator of Afrobeat Tony Allen.
With reissues and brand new releases coming soon, World Circuit continues to bring diverse, genre-defying music to a wider audience.

LYRICS
(Spanish)
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
El cariño que te tengo
Yo no lo puedo negar
Se me sale la babita
Yo no lo puedo evitar.
Cuando Juanica y Chan Chan
En el mar cernían arena
Como sacudía el ‘jibe’
A Chan Chan le daba pena.
Limpia el camino de paja
Que yo me quiero sentar
En aquel tronco que veo
Y así no puedo llegar.
De Alto Cedro voy para Marcané
Luego a Cueto voy para Mayarí.
(English)
I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.
The love I have for you I cannot deny
My mouth is watering
I just can’t help myself.
When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
How her bottom shook and
Chan Chan was aroused!
Clean the dry sugar cane
leaves from the path
So I can get to that trunk
I want to sit down.
I’m going from Alto Cedro
to Marcané
Then from Cueto, I’m going
to Mayarí.

My dad was in Cuba to work when suddenly died. The rest of us we were back in Italy, I Will never forget that phone call telling us the sad new, never seen my dad again. Many years passed, this song and this album make me cry all the times because I Will Always feel this special connection with this island, like my Dad Is still there enjoying the music, the lovely Friends, the mojitos... I like to think like that. Love to Cuba.
What a touching tribute! I am speechless..I like BVSC, too.
God will see your tears, you will see your Dad one day in the next life.
So sorry that that happened to you and for your loss. But, what a send off he got! Better by far than being in obscurity as was the case prior to being rediscovered so spectacularly. Having said that, was he a member of that group, all probably gone by now? In that case, which?
God rest in peace the soul of your dad. Beautiful music
Oh dear....
As a young boy from England on holiday in France in the year 2000, aged around 7 or 8, my parents thought they'd lost me in a music store. They of course got worried, apparently searching for 15 minutes thinking I had ran away. Well, they found me hidden away at the very back of the store, with a pair of huge headphones on, listening to this Album 😂
Needless to say they were relieved, and given my new found fascination with this music they bought me the album. I have to say I'm pretty proud of younger me, for having such good taste. As a 30 year old this music never fails to bring a smile to my face. Viva Cuba 🫶🏻
great anecdote, such beautiful music definitely transcends age!

I am African from Mali 🇲🇱 and this song is a majesty
I remember going camping with my dad, when I was about 14. I was still asleep at noon, and he played this song on his cd player, very quietly. But I still remember, how this song, while I was still asleep, was sort of the background music for my dream. I woke up as the song was still playing, and it was maybe the most gentle wake up, I ever had.
More then 18 years have passed, since that morning. And my dad died this january, but I will always will link that song to that moment, and ultimatly to my father
you are lucky and blessed to have such profound lifelong experience

I feel like i lived in Cuba before. Heard it for the 1st time and my soul feels right.. Greetings from Kenya .
Ry Cooder an english musician was responsible for this album, he planned to record an album with two african musicians in Cuba, but for some reason they weren't able to get their visa and arrive in Cuba, so Ry Cooder decided to gather cuban musicians from the 60s and 70s, and since Cuba was "frozen in time" per say, the recording studio was untouched and the recording material was all available there, so they recorded this incredible album. Of course Ry Cooder thought about orchestrating the album, but the Compay, Rubén, Ochoa and the others are incredible musicians as well, just incredible how this ended making one of the best albums of all time.

Hola. Me emocionan tus palabras. Soy española, pero me he sentido muy identificada. ❤

I can't understand any words but this song make me feel nostalgic. I love it!
In the lyrics “pena”; literally “sad”, is an embarrassing situation because Chan Chan feels the attraction to Juanica when he see her moving hers hips. Sorry my lousy English.

you have no idea how much I love this song and Cuba!! When I was little, at the age of 7, my father and I went on a trip. we met people, lived with them and met a lot of kind people. Some guys went and sold records with these songs and we bought them all)) and then we went to a live performance. I was little and was very impressed, it sank into my soul so much. I've been listening to this song every day for 12 years
I so dream of seeing everything again, seeing those people with whom we lived, it was amazing. I still remember that grandmother, she was 96 years old, she showed us so much. We also lived with a large family; they had many children. I didn’t understand anything they were saying to me, I only knew two words: thank you and look)) we walked around Cuba together and they also took us to try sugar cane

The very first time I heard this song was over two decades ago. I was going through withdrawals from being on pain medicine for 2 years due to some really bad surgeries due to skateboarding. I stumbled upon a random website and clicked a video and this was playing. I felt like I was dying from the withdrawal but at the same time it was as though I had never heard music before. My brain chemistry was trying to work itself out, I was sweating and shivering. Then once Ibriham started singing I felt nauseous and started to cry tears of jubilation. When I was 99% in misery this song took that 1% of me that wasn't dying and lifted me up high above my problems and sung me to sleep.
