Yes, I always tell my mainland friends to NEVER call me “Hawaiian”...it’s very disrespectful to the Native Hawaiians who were overthrown by white Americans.
We don’t have wolves, coyotes, snakes, skunks, and rabies.
Poi is ground up taro root and it’s the main Hawaiian starch staple so it’s often eaten with really salty foods.
Butter mochi...it’s pronounce “mo” and “chee”, and is made from rice flour and is a local Japanese dessert. Plain mochi is very sticky but since there’s a lot of butter added, it loses that stickiness.
Cuttlefish is basically jerky. Cuttlefish isn’t the same as squid.
Hurricane popcorn mix is often added to popcorn in movies. The rice crackers are just rice crackers coated in a soy sauce/sugar mix.
“Musubi” is pronounce the way you do...except the inflection is in the 3rd syllable, not the 2nd syllable. It’s musuBI.
Haupia is basically a coconut jello. Hehe.
Macadamia nuts have the highest fat content of any nut in the world.
Li hing mui is delicious...and the powder lightly sprinkled on a snow come (we call them shaved ice here) or on apples, pineapples, and mangoes.
PS - the hand sign 🤙🏽 is a SHAKA. It’s used to say hi, bye, thanks, you’re welcome, etc.
PPS - Mahalo is “thank you”, while mahalo nui loa is “thank you very much”. A’ole pilikia (ah-oh-leh pee-lee-kee-ah) is “you’re welcome” [it’s literally translated to “no problem”.

I love musubis too! But I grew up making the traditional triangle musubis, before spam musubis became a thing. Hehe. I like any kind of musubi, but I have to admit that I like short grain rice the best, aka sushi grade rice. It’s a little sweeter than long grain rice. So when was the last time you were back home?

Li hing mui powder is so good on sour candys! The watermelon or apple ones are the best! And to make a grown up drinks with and rim the cup with it mmm!

Austin, Since you and your family are on your way to Hawaii you should pick up on snacks while you’re there and come back and try them on your show as a part 2 :)

I was 10 years old when I lived in Hawaii in the early 70's and my favorite of the ones you tried was the Li Hing Mu or sour plums you suck the sour off of them and throw the rest away. But you did miss out on the rice paper candies that you ate the whole thing wrapper and all

Put that li hing mui powder on the rim of your margarita glass. You'll enjoy it more, I think!

Just "found" you guys. I am binge watching all your videos. Appreciate the fact that you aren't using foul language. Subscribed for that reason, that and you are hilarious! 😂😂

  • @jacquelinequinones1952

Cam I agree with you about raisins. Hopefully next month I will send you some Puertorican food and I will send you guava. It is eaten as a dessert with goat cheese. The guava comes in a jar already, it's not the fresh fruit, its cured in a syrup. Papaya also comes the same way.
August, I hope to be sending you a care package with very cool and good food.

The hurricane popcorn is better when its with fresh warm popcorn and warm butter, mixed with the furikake and arare. And a lot of times the spam in the spam musubis are briefly marinated in a teriyaki (sugar and soy sauce). Try and rim a glass with the li hing powder and drink with a margarita or sprinkle some on fresh pineapple or fruits. Just a sprinkle, don't dunk that... lol.
