    As a Scot, I eat haggis on a regular basis. It’s delicious. My favourite is Balmoral chicken thats a chicken breast stuffed with haggis and wrapped in bacon with a whisky or peppercorn sauce. YUM

      Not eating animals at all is what's good

    • @JacknVictor
      @JacknVictor Před 5 měsíci +8

      @@princessmariposa828 that's your personal opinion but it's not the only opinion or even the correct opinion. You do what's good for you but there's no need for anyone to force that opinion on anyone else. Despite certain people trying to convince the world that humans are herbivores, we have canine teeth for a reason. And to be fair, I gave veganism a go years ago and it made me very ill and my doctor advised me to start eating meat again because even with vitamins and supplements I was getting worse. Within weeks of being back on a mixed meat and veg diet my health improved dramatically, and other than a few non-diet related health issues, I'm the best I've ever been and that would not be the case if I wasn't eating meat. I've tried all those plant based meat style items that appeared a few years ago and they are a gimmick. There's n substance behind their claims and the taste awful. Every single one of them just tastes like about of date tin of peas that has been blended then roughly shaped to try and resemble a meat product (again, if vegans aren't fixated n meat, why do vegan foods insist on resembling meat?) as a meat eater, I don't tell others what they should or shouldn't eat, but vegans seem to think they are entitled to do that, and they aren't. They should only concern themselves with what they consume and let everyone else do the same. I've got no concern or bad feelings about vegans and veganism, but I don't like being told what I'm doing is wrong when it's natural. A lot more natural than processing plant protein in to a burger patty, chicken style nuggets, or the most god awful 'sausages' I've ever tasted. Even the new technology to produce meat in a lab not cut from actual animals isn't good enough for vegans because in order for them to grow the meat the initially have to harvest the cells from an animal. They only have to do this once, and then they can, in theory, produce meat forever from that one sample. At the minute the cost to do this isn't viable but they are working to do it at a price comparable to what actual meat costs us now. But like I said, the vegan world won't accept this because if the initial cells have come from an animal. The thing is, the cells don't have to come from a dead animal, as they can take living animal cells to reproduce for this process, so I don't see the problem. I forgot one, providing the resulting product was safe, and really did taste like it's actual farm produced equivalent, and had the same texture and I got the same pleasure, protein content and health benefits from consuming it, I would switch over to it straight away. I would do that if there was a vegan option that gave me the health benefits and didn't end up with me having to be hospitalised too. But so far that's not an option. So until that day I will continue to consume meat, and I will continue to give that animal that has died for my benefit, it's due respect and use every part of that animal that is useable and not waste any of it.

    In Iceland, we have a similar thing. We have liver sausage and blood pudding, which we often refer to as "slaughter." It's made from the innards of the sheep. Because, like our friends and distant cousins in Scotland, we couldn't afford to waste food back in the day and it became rooted in our mind that food waste is bad. Pouches are cut and sewn from the stomach, as in traditional haggis, or artificial non-edible pouches can be used. They are filled with a mixture of sliced/minced fat or suet, flour (rye and oats), rolled oats, and either blood or finely minced liver (sometimes the kidney is also blended in). The pouches are sewn shut after filling, then they are slow boiled for 2-3 hours. It may be eaten hot or cold.

      Here in Sweden we got "Pölsa", which is liver, heart, lung and sinew from beef or sometimes moose, mixed with onion, barley, stock, black pepper and marjoram. It's commonly served with mashed or boiled potatoes, pickled beetroot and sometimes fried eggs.
      We also got blood pudding here as well. And there's a dish called svartsoppa (black soup), which is mainly made from goose (sometimes pig) blood. Allthough it's basically only eaten in the south province of Skåne (Scania), by not that many I'd assume.

      I tried black pudding and detested it. It reminded me of swallowing bloody nose clots as a kid and made me gag every bite. We heated with a wood stove and I’d have a bloody nose every week at least, it wasn’t fun. Sometimes I’d even start feeling faint. Liver is similarly iron forward in flavor, coupled with ammonia (urine) and never was palatable to me either. 🤮🤮🤮
      :edit: use all the animal, yes, but that doesn’t mean you should eat it; dogs and cats eat their own poo sometimes, and would love the liver and kidneys. Pigs would love all that scrap too, and would then make more food for you later.

      Yep especially in hard times like war time , and it's no different to burgers that have all sorts of meat in them .

    • @JacknVictor
      @JacknVictor Před 5 měsíci +1

      Beef hearts go in to McDonald's burgers and many other mince/ground beef dishes as it is a muscle, the same as steak etc and not an offal so it is just labelled as beef. Beef heart, cleaned and filleted properly, then slow cooked would rival almost every other cut of beef. Slow cooked it's very like brisket. Diced up it makes a great beef stew, and minced it makes a great Bolognese, chilli, cottage pie or burgers. And before anyone turns their nose up at it, you have more than likely eaten it without knowing you have. Also for anyone that eats sausages, the casings on them are either pig or lamb intestines which isn't really much different from a sheep's stomach being used in a haggis. I have seen smaller haggis made using cows intestines, which also get used for salamis, black pudding etc.
      If you eat meat, the least you can do is use all on the animal that it is possible to use, if it's had to die for you to eat it, do it the respect of not wasting any of it.

    As someone who competes in America at Scottish Highland games, I will tell you that we have numerous different versions of Scottish meals, and there is a food booth called the haggis hut that does a walking taco using haggis meat! You guys should also try dragon balls, which is scotch eggs with Buffalo ranch on it!

    Not a native Scot but more than 1/2 on both sides of the fam. Haggis is great and I'm proud of you for overcoming your aversion to it. It really is wonderful. I skip the whiskey sauce too. It does just fine on its own plain.

      But have you tried a good menuedo? Mexican tripe stew. Its a fantastic hangover cure. But once again find a reputable Mexican tia or abula to make it for you. No canned stuff

    Surströmming!!!!!! *insert evil laugh* As someone who moved to Sweden last summer I cannot tell you how many times I was offered surströmming and I absolutely REFUSE to even be within a city block of an open can. But, it would be entertaining to watch you two open a can and try it! Also, don't do what non-swedes do by trying it straight from the can lol that is what makes people gag other than the smell. You break up pieces of the fish and have it with flat bread and boiled potatoes and red onion, kinda like a taco.

    I'm curious to as why lungs are the "illegal body part" to make food out of in the US, but heart is okay. 😅
    I can add I've only eaten blood pudding out of those things, which I like more now than when I was a kid. 😅 We have it with lingonberry jam and bacon usually. But apparently some have blood pudding with pölsa, so a lot of iron there. 😅
