Should You Count Calories? (Enough Already!) - Thomas DeLauer
I'm going to shift the way that you look at calories forever. You see when it comes down to getting in the best shape. When it comes down to burning fat, there's a couple of simple things that you have to understand, but first and foremost, we need to know what this is. This is five pounds of fat. All right? That equals 17,500 calories. That means that you need to be in a deficit of 17,500 calories to burn this much fat. So now, let me ask you a question. Does it matter whether you are in a calorie deficit over the course of one day or over the course of two days or maybe even over the course of a week? You see it really comes down to thermodynamics and how much calories in calories out, but over a different scale, not just over one day. You see so this is where we need to shift the paradigm as to how we look at things.
It doesn't matter what you're consuming over the course of one day. Why? Because your body doesn't know what 24 hours is. That's up here. You see we've developed a cognitive awareness of 24 hours. Twenty-four hours, in essence, is kind of this artificial manmade thing. We know the sun goes down, we know the moon comes up, we know it gets dark, all that we know what 24 hours is, but does our physiology truly know? I mean outside of our circadian rhythm, outside of our sleep-wake cycle, does our bioenergetics, is our body really know at 24 hours is? Let me make some sense of this.
You see if you look at consuming calories over the course of a day, you're just assuming that we have this clock that resets at midnight, and our caloric needs reset to zero every midnight. That's not the case. Our calories or ever revolving, whether we're sleeping, whether it's midnight, whether it's 2:00 AM, we always have a need for calories, and we always need to be in somewhat of a deficit, but sometimes we're going to be in a surplus and sometimes we're going to be in a deficit. You see at the very minute that you are eating food, you're going to surplus that very second, that very frozen point in time, of course, you're in a surplus.
You are consuming more than you're burning unless you're maybe eating something that has so little calories that it doesn't matter. If you were taking a bite of steak or taking a bite of a burrito at that very second time, you are in a caloric surplus. Does that mean that you're getting fat? No. Okay, so when we look at it from the course of a day, it's just as crazy. We are freezing this moment in time and we're thinking that this is the end all be all for our calories. No, no, no. Back it up. Take a look through a wide lens for a second.
Think about it. Over the course of a few days, over the course of a week, stop measuring your calories daily, that's just going to drive you crazy and all you're doing is becoming a victim to all the self-proclaimed diet gurus that are out there that only look at studies and only look at this artificial breakdown of day in and day out. Honestly, this part just irks me.
What about bioenergetics? What about different catalysts that elicit more of a powerful metabolic response? Okay, now, sure I will give credit where credit is due. At the end of the day, calories in versus calories out do matter, but at what point do calories in versus calories out just cause you to die? If you were to go for a certain amount of time in a calorie deficit, you would obviously not function anymore, but at what point does fat gain start?
Does it start at 24 hours of a calorie surplus or does it start at three days of a calorie surplus or does it start at 90 seconds of a calorie surplus? It's always occurring. It's always a checks and balances, and if we didn't have other hormonal factors, other catecholamine like adrenaline, epinephrine and stuff like that, factoring in, then that would mean that every time we eat food, we're putting ourselves in this net gain of calories. You know what I'm saying? So we do have to factor in so many different things. For example, Glucagon.
Let me give you an example here. If you need 3000 calories just to maintain your weight every day, if that's roughly what you figured your BMR is, that's 21,000 calories over the course of a single week that you would be consuming to maintain the same weight. Okay, well let's make things really simple. If you go one day where you fast, okay, that's going to be roughly a 3000 calorie deficit. That's almost a pound a week right there.
Calories in, calories out cannot be determined by a 24 hour man-made artificial period of time. Look at it through a wider lens and you'll suddenly look at life through a wider lens and I promise you, you won't be confined to this narrow-minded thinking that is making you miserable. I'll see you in the next video.

I don't say this lightly, because over the years I have watched a lot of fitness/Lifestyle youtubers, but you are hands down the most inspirational.
I saw your video on stretch marks, I have them too, all over my stomach. The way you can so confidently ignore it and still achieve such an amazing physique, is truly impressive.
I would go through phases of losing a lot of weight, seeing the stretch marks and thinking "Whats the point, i'm scared for life" and giving up and gaining weight again.
But since I started watching your video, I've lost more weight than ever, and I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that I have them. I am still a little embarrassed, but i'm getting beyond that point, I'm getting to a place where I am actually starting to see my abs a little, and the marks are starting to fade, You've given me hope. Thank you.

I did fasting back in 1986. I didn't have a name for it back then but it worked. See I was the chubby kid that got picked on because of my broken metabolism. I lost soo much weight that my buddies and parents thought I was ill but I never felt better. You can never satisfy the masses. I started going to college and started eating every 3 tp four hours because that's what society tells us to do and the pounds came back. I've been suffering for decades trying to lose the weight and regain my fit self. Thanks to you I have rediscovered this method of fat loss and cellular rebooting. I'm 50 now and feel like I did back on high-school! Thanks Thomas

If you learn that your body has it's own language than you'll discover that it knows best. I listened to my body and inadvertently transitioned into a Keto like diet without even knowing it because my body told me what it wanted and I gave it that. I didn't eat or live a certain way because people told me that's how you live. I live this way because my body guided me here and I went from severe depression among PTSD along with other problems to one of the happiest healthiest people around. You'll be surprised if you just decide to take the time to sit down and just listen.

The value of counting calories day-to-day is that it keeps your caloric intake in check week-to-week or month-to-month. It's much easier track a single day at a time than a whole week. It also helps to know what to shoot for in a day, and what's sustainable. I started strict 16/8 IF this year and I've gained 5+ pounds because my caloric intake went up compared to the previous year. There are other benefits and I feel great on IF, but in terms of weight loss/gain, calories do matter (like you said). The longer time frame perspective is valuable to think about if you get too hung up on a single day. It's about lifestyle and good food choices, not a "diet." Just my 2c.

Your transparency and courage to put yourself out there and subject yourself to criticism is very much appreciated. I am 63 yrs old and I am practicing and putting your recipes, your suggested supplements, your work outs, fasting protocols, and ketosis food consuming life style to use in my own life, and my life has improved and is improving dramatically so again thank you.
And I know it is hard but try not to let the few comments from the crazies beat down your resolve but look at them as a gift, as heavy emotional weights that will help you build emotional muscle and strengthen your resolve. You may not realize it now but you are helping them, and some may even eventually come around and become your best supporters.
The sane people of this planet, appreciate you telling us the truth of: Easy life style choices, hard life! But Hard life style choices, easy, good, healthy life!!! Thomas by your own transformation and the transformation of me and the many others you are helping, you are proving that practicing hard life style choices just a little bit every day can make ones life great!!
And as for the ignorant, lazy, individuals that don't want to look at the research or do the work but only want to fight for their own limitations and there for get to keep those limitation, well people like that, (those who take the easy way out) may bother a few of us for a few seconds a day but they have to live with themselves and their stupid fucking worthless choices, every fucking second, of their sad worthless fucking life, so FUCK those assholes.
And I hope if this is ever read, that this makes someone on your staff or you laugh! Have a great day and a great holiday and thanks. A friend on your side, Bob Bales

Great video, even better timing. Just last night I was a bit disappointed with myself. I (like I occasionally do) exceeded my maintenance calorie level (by about 300), when normally I’m at about a 500 cal deficit. I’m OMAD most of the time, 100% carnivore, down 140lbs in 9mos. You’re videos have been a powerful tool to get me where I am, and where I still want to go. Currently 42yo, 6’4” 212, about 20% body fat. Would like to be about 15%, then build back to about 220lbs. Just wanted you to know that you have a massive impact on people’s lives. Thank you. Keep up the good work!

Listen to your body. Find out how it works, what works for you, perhaps look further into what your ancestors ate, try every strategy. Communicate with your body. It's like a relationship. It can only be healthy and successful through listening and communication. People like Thomas know alot, but they aren't you, they don't know you specifically. They can give you guidelines, tips and tricks, but the hacks, cheat codes, and strategy guides for your body are yours to find out. Thomas is one of the best teachers out there, so trust in his words, but learn your body so you can better apply what he teaches by customizing it to yourself.

Agreed about the self proclaimed gurus, but I also feel like we need to address deficit; the way your explaining it is coming from a way I agree with rather then the deficits everybody tells you to go into that is considered a “diet” that works against you every time. I keep it simple, we are hormonally regulated so eat when your hungry, stop when your full and fast for longer periods of time than your used to and don’t stress out about macros and you’ll succeed Everytime. FYI I did a 14 day water fast last year, and starting a 40 day fast Jan 1st. I’m always amazed how many people talk sh** about it yet it’s always the best I’ve felt in my ENTIRE LIFE! Keep doing you! 💯

I did my own little research this week. I spent the whole week tracking my calories, just to see how many I actually eat on a regular day; paying special attention to what is supposed to be my BMR and my active calories burned during my workouts. I tried to ensure I ate in a surplus, to see where I end up at the end of the week. I started at 172 pounds eating roughly 3,000 to 3,500 cals a day. At the end of the week, I was 169. I was so full sometimes that I felt like I couldn’t possibly eat any more food that day even if I tried. My conclusion: calories count, but there needs to be self-experimentation to determine one’s own true BMR, and not one based off a formula. Certainly not one based on a 24 hour rolling calendar!

Kelyn I agree. Maybe after the holidays I’ll do this with meal prep to really control my caloric intake. My main goal was to take a short term snap shot of my regular intake during a work week. Most of my lunches were estimated figures, because the cafeteria where I work doesn’t give me caloric numbers for what they serve. I tried to use MyFitnessPal to help with my estimations, but it wasn’t 100% precise.

I have been intermittent fasting for 101 days.
Almost all days I did some exercise with weights and cardio.
      I started at 296
For the first 69 days, I lost 45 pounds.
      Emphasis here was caloric restraint
For the last 32 days, I lost 11 pounds.
Emphasis here is to try and find my caloric maintenance.
I do one meal a day, and trying to breach 2000 calories in one meal now takes effort for me. I do not think my "caloric" maintenance is 2000 calories considering the weight I loss in the past 32 days.
I do prefer the last 32 days of weight loss, even if the weight loss is less drastic, since I do not feel as hungry and I got more energy throughout the day. I do not feel tired or want to quit as I want to fast now. I like the feeling of being in fasted state and holding back my one big meal as long as I can.

First, this was really a great way to think about calories. I have a challenge for you though... I am 5'1", 117 lb female with a body fat percentage of around 21%. My goal is to be 108-110 lbs with a body fat % of 16-17%. I've maintained a 70 lb. Weight Loss for 14 years, but literally have been stuck here every since. I go down to 115 at my lowest and (tmi) start my period and I'm right back up, so it's this vicius cycle over and over. I've tried literally everything, including fasting, keto, different exercise, etc. What do you think I should do? I don't want to be happy where I'm at because I still have too much fat on my lower body that makes me not love the way my legs look. Also, I'm 41, so I'm afraid of what my hormones may do to my body in the future. Curious if you have any advice?? Thank you for your great content!

I think that calories in and calories out still do not matter. If that were the case why would the same approach that allowed you to lose weight effectively in months 1-3 not work 4 months or more after you begin a course of eating? Why won't eating 1,700 calories and burning weight with 1 hour of cardio and 1/2 hour of weight-lifting, keep working years down the line? What are the other factors that this model doesn't take into account? Relying on the tired and old model like this, will not get you where you need to go, let it die with processed carbs. Feel your body and what it needs. Fresh cooked foods. It can tell you what you need more than a calories in/out model EVER will. Your consumption of food or "calories" will lessen by default.

@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial Since, my goal isn't to be on the cover of a magazine, but to feel better than I did the day before, I have not and will not worry about calories on Keto. And until you can prove that number of calories expended can be perfectly calculated, I won't. I feel better at 42 than I did in my 20's and 30's because I eat better now, than I did then. Eating enough, fresh and healthy foods, whatever amount that comes in is more important to me than worrying about what caloric intake I have in a 24 - 72 hour window as your video states. its called metabolism. You keep cutting calories, your metabolism adjusts to the lower amounts effectively lowering the amount of calories needed. So calories in and calories out DO matter. This is why people who used to be able to eat 2500 a day to maintain, then cut out 1000 to lose weight then go back to their 2500 a day balloon right back.
