    It all makes sense. I have been fat my entire life, and when i was younger i wanted to lose weight. I was told to eat as little fat as possible, he was so obsessed by it, that it would be best to get 0 grams of fat every day. I wasnt even told to count calories, but i was told that i could eat ALL the sugar and bread i wanted. Thats 18 years ago, and unfortunately there was nothing about the keto diet back then. I did lose weight, but i had to struggle so hard for years, and i gained it all back, and more, after some years. And through all those years i was sick all the time. Today im following a diet close to the carnivore, im rarely sick anymore, and ive lost 57 pounds so far, thanks to people like you!

      Congratulations on finally learn how to get lasting results. Even though the keto is seen as a modern concept it started as treatment for epilepsy about 100 years ago. In the mid 1800s, the father of weight loss William Banting wrote a book that emphasized the reduction in carbohydrates.

      @@drekberg Thanks! Ive heard about the good results with keto and epilepsy. So many other diseases could be treated with this diet as well. Its really sad with so many sick people, and then the keto diet is almost kept a secret by the government. I live in Denmark, and they have literally been promoting the same diet my entire life, or maybe its even gotten worse.

    Holy crap, this should be taught i schools. I finally understand why I was never able to loose weight until now. I have been struggling with weight since my youth, when my sugar addiction started. I have been addicted to sugar ever since, but now I have been using you wisdom and teaching to finally change my diet in a way that has killed my sugar addiction and I'm seeing results.
    I know that there is a long way to go, but my god - this should be public knowledge.
    Even my wife has difficulty in accepting that my diet is now low calories and high fat, she thinks its revolting, but I can only say that it really works. I have been doing intermittent fasting 18-6 and I do no longer snack and I have no crawings any more.

    Wondering how caloric restriction might help for a faster result before shifting into long term mode? I’ve been keto and IF for years now, but the “counting calories doesn’t work” just lead to me steadily gaining weight. What’s the sweet spot between meeting the demand of BMR, eating a balanced nutritious LCHF on IF, and reducing calories enough so that you lose the excess fat easily without cutting into BMR?

    • @randomprotag9329
      @randomprotag9329 Pƙed 9 dny

      from my expierence there needs to be a long term mode planned. the way that works for me is to establish the healthy eating choices + exercise habits even if you eat a bit too much and once the food choice habits + exercise are stable then going by eye % change portions adjusting depending on lack of weight loss. counting calories is more trouble than its worth when a wiegh in is needed to check if the estimation is correct.

    Excellent explanation thanks. Lifestyle change is key. Understanding the early stages of Keto adaption is also key. At first I gorged myself on fat and protein because my body complained that it was looking for carbs and there were none. Now it’s caught on to the idea of converting eaten fats to glucose and my t2d symptoms have disappeared but I am still a little fatigued which means perhaps that the body has still to learn to tap into “reserves”. It’s time to do 2mad.

    This makes sense up to a certain extent. If we discuss this all the way up and down, then people will have problems in the long term following keto too. If I don't eat carbs, I don't feel emotionally well.
    So why not eating starchy foods with a low GI and control the sizes, ratios? Less animal fat, a little more good lipids, moderate low-GI carbs, a bit of fruit and regular sizes of protein. For me, this is a lot more sustainable and I bet this works for the vast majority even in a quest for dropping in weight to becoming fit. I am just asking sir. What's your opinion on this? Thanks and the video is great. I liked the explanations a lot.

My meal portion sizes are not that large, so I dont stuff myself with foods on every meal. My weight checking off and on tells me where I am at on eating daily. No hourly snacks. • @ChessdumyTV
    @ChessdumyTV Pƙed rokem +1

    I think people should stop touting that carb foods are the least satiating. Just look at potatoes, wheat bran, rolled oatmeal, and sweet potatoes. These are pretty satiating for a lot of people, especially if one drinks alot of water at the same time; the fiber expands when in contact with water, thus making the stomach full. Also oatmeal in particular is a decent source of protein and omega 6 fat. I guess it makes some people tired but then that would be a gut microbiome problem not a carb problem. Furthermore, a lot of the insulin and blood sugar mantra is really only a serious issue for diabetics. One can lower insulin levels even if they eat sugar, simple carbs, etc...so long as they are low enough in calories. Processed foods are addictive and strongly linked to weight gain (caloric overconsumption) not so much because of the carbs but more because of the scientifically strategized ratio of fat sugar and salt. Ice cream for example is just as fatty as it is carby. There are many problems with most or all youtube keto gurus, these only scratch the surface. Other problems include contradictions with outcome data (throughout millennia, the most lean healthy people were extremely high carb, their macros were something like 75% carb 15% fat 10% protein), the fact that even diabetics can eat carbs if strategically and carefully worked out (like by lowering the gi by combining a complex carb food with a protein+fat based food), the overemphasis on macros in general instead of satiety (because they somehow think eggs are satiating for everyone which is so untrue for me that it almost offends me in a funny way, kinda like telling me hey because eggs are not satiating for me I have a serious problem), the fact they care more about MISLEADING mechanisms that they sometimes get wrong than about again outcome data, and superficially prescribing keto as a solution to every health problem in existence by oversimplifying their keto theories...Macros do not matter for weight loss though, the only mechanism that matters is calories; the matter then becomes reduced to what is the best strategy to induce a healthy number of calories. Keto gurus worth any salt like Dr Ekberg basically say high fat low carb is the best strategy to keep calories, this is where there is debate and also personal preference. Different people find different food ingredients to be satiating, some find eggs more satiating than rolled oatmeal and others are the opposite. I personally find it too easy to eat like 10 eggs and STILL be hungry, but hard to eat 1 dry cup rolled oats...so I like my oatmeal. The healthiest diet is just any diet that is nutritionally complete, satiating enough to get your calories to a good level, and has no serious drawbacks. This is possible with both vegan and carnivore dieting. I think high carb pescetarian (vegan except fish allowed) is pretty good for me but that is just my style, its not better or worse than other styles. I will finish by saying that I agree counting calories is a losing strategy. I think it is best to figure out satiating foods you want to eat (I just eat the same 3-4 general meals a day every single day, sometimes the meals have a slight variation though) and track the calories of those foods just a couple times and if good then stick with it.

      It also sound a like your diet is lower in protein which is required to build muscle. Try increasing protein by including nuts, seeds, non-GMO soya, eggs, beans and lentils. All of what Little Voice said is correct. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all different. A build that is normal for one person may not be what is normal for another. Skinny lanky Scandinavians, like you and me, tend to have a much skinnier normal than a lot of nationalities. When I was competing I had to work for years to put on a few pounds of muscle. Today my normal is about 185 pounds at 6 foot 3 inches. Don't be too hasty to try to change what maybe normal for you.

    I strongly disagree with this statement.
    There is no way to lose fat/weight without calorie deficit. This video is good for people having unhealthy diet style. Even if u eat whole food and veggies and healthy fat you still can gain weight if u eat more calories to what your body needs.
    Few yrs ago I've tried Keto and I'd gain weight. I've lost weight counting calories, meaning I'd cut my portions and that is how I've lost weight plus excercise of course. And I have no issues maintaining my weight, I m not hungry and for sure not deprived, I had my medical check and my results are impressive, all the values are in the range..
    My diet is based on non processed food, no sugar, just small amounts of grains, lots of veggies, I love dairy, no read meat (I just don't like it, no other reason) and I make my own cakes nad cookies because I have sweet tooth. So, in a conclusion, counting calories is not bad if u you eat nutritious food, not processed food. There are just some people, like myself, that have to watch the food intake as they gain fast.

    If the body is so smart, why doesn't the body produce just enough insulin for the glucose to go back down to the level of the narrow range instead of going lower than the normal range creating huge swings? Does it mean the feedback mechanism doesn't work as quickly as the work of insulin?

      @@drekberg Well I wasn't thinking of prescribing it to myself as a remedy in general: the fact is I went vegan a few months ago. Your video is my take away understanding that I have had after years of researching and experimenting on my own. You reinforce my understanding of what I know to be true. As far as number management goes, I was successful on the Atkins diet years ago and succeeded in getting off statins, as well as in losing weight. So it works, but there are conflicting bits of information. So now here I am eating the diet (vegan) that I wish I would have eaten 40 years ago before I became type 2; Atkins died I believe of a heart attack; everyone continues to point out sugar or refined carbohydrates as the "angel of death." And I think one could argue that saturated fats and cholesterol i.e., the Atkins diet don't raise cholesterol levels, especially given my success. I am convinced. however, that a vegan diet is the way God intended us to eat. I'm sick of the whole cycle of industrial ag; big pharma; a medical community that has been tainted by the former. I'm sick of the online marketing gimmicks selling a way of life, an ebook, or re-branding what we learned 30 years ago: Mediterranean and Atkins diets re-branded. I was looking for an honest opinion. You offer videos that present information as I believe it to be true, and I'd appreciate your honest opinion

      I can understand your frustration. That is the reason I started the channel to provide a resource for my patients and anyone else wanting to learn sound principles instead of hype. I think you could probably still eat mostly vegetarian, but I would try to add in plenty of healthy fats as well as healthy meat, fish and/or egg. Vegetables are cleansing and work great for short term purification, but in the long run I believe a mix is better to balance cleansing and rebuilding.

    • @webstuff56
      @webstuff56 Pƙed 5 lety

      @@drekberg Thank you. Yes it has been frustrating, especially after I've realized how conventional medicine has not just been failing me, but actually has been feeding the problem and killing me in the process. Your channel has been great. It has had a reinforcing effect of everything I've learned and experienced from my own research. I'm currently reading a book titled: "The Diabetes Code," by Dr. Jason Fung. He's also the author of "The Obesity Guide," as well as a book on fasting. It's clear to me, like most eating a western diet that I'm suffering from Hyperinsulinemia: the cycle of too much glucose causing too much insulin, causing a cycle of insulin resistance, producing fatty liver, as well as fat throughout my body. Metabolic syndrome should have been diagnosed decades ago by way of high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, visceral fat, as well as heart disease, etc. I've had a heart attack, triple bypass and a stroke. I've been wrongly placed on glyberide to stimulate insulin in pursuit of chasing after a symptom (high glucose), not the root cause of: high blood glucose and A1C; in the final analysis ensuring me a slow death. However, it's all becoming clear to me now, thanks to you and others, such as Dr. Fung. I will have to be in charge of my own doctoring through my own research and filtering. The diet change ( vegan) and Intermediate fasting has helped. I've lost 18 pounds and I was not overly over weight, but I was obese--an elusive definition when one thinks they're at a good body weight. I'm waiting for the visceral fat to disappear while monitoring my A1C and blood glucose, as well as triglycerides (my three markers, if you will). I think meat and dairy is pretty much eliminated from my life; however, given that our bodies require Omega 3 fatty acids which as you pointed out via the plant-based-food conversion rate. It appears the only natural way one can achieve proper levels of Omega 3 is through fish; I've concluded that God made us such that fish is a natural food for us to eat and I'm open to fish. My only problem with eating fish, and why I stopped eating it years before meat, is because it's so damned poisoned. Right now I've only started taking supplements. I've seen on youtube there are land-based fish farms that I will consider buying fish from directly--a business I'd like to get into myself. I eat two whole-food-plant-based meals a day and fast 16 hours a day, every day and I just may do that for the rest of my life, not just hen labs come back normal again, as it's my belief that once the visceral fat and fatty liver is gone that if I were to add back a third meal and slack off in any way it'll all come back-- that's my cost of a life-time of dietary abuse and a failed medical community; it's a diet that's not what everyone needs to follow. Certainly there are many balances in-between depending on one's health profile. I'm 63 with my profile so that's mine. Once again thank you for all the effort you put into helping others understand how the body and diet function--we are listening! And we're just at the beginning stages of understanding that conventional medicine has been wrong--but don't try to argue with them, as our bodies are so battered we still need them. I'm angry not because they themselves were taught wrong but because I believe they had at their disposal just as you and Dr, Fong have had the duty to question your professions and to alert and to educate us who like yourselves have been led astray for decades: many have died and many more will die because of this. I've nearly died twice and I don't know what unseen damage still lurks inside me. I consider myself fortunate, as I recently had a CT scan of my vein grafts and they have only mild narrowing, after 13 years, where 10 years is the average for vein grafts to survive. Honestly, I had an epiphany one day that led me to my cardiologist to get a CT scan and to become concerned about my longevity. My response has been diet and stress management. By the way, here on the side in the videos is Dr. Fong: czcams.com/video/tIuj-oMN-Fk/video.html I don't think he has his own channel, but he is well publicized on youtube in interviews and at speaking engagements. I value both yours and his education here on youtube and you both get my full attention. After I finish his book, I'll be moving on to another book in understanding the role of EPA and DHA Omega 3 and Omega 6 balancing. Thank you!

    Counting calories does not automatically mean you are in state of deprivation. Some people can use a reminder of just how many calories are in the food they are eating. Sometimes double checking what you are consuming, especially fat if doing LCHF, can be helpful.
    Sure, insulin is the fat storage hormone. But isn't fat storage basically automatic anytime you eat more calories than you can use in that moment? I eat 1 or 2 times a day. Those calories have to go somewhere. Typically I consume ~ 2000 calories in a 4 hour window. If 2000 calories is exactly what I need for 24 hours then that's ~83 Calories an hour. All that extra energy can't be in my blood stream.
    It seems that where Insulin becomes a problem is when you are eating small carbohydrate meals all day long, the insulin will not allow your body to use it's stored energy. This is exacerbated by individuals that are insulin resistant like myself.
    Isn't actual hypoglycemia a rare thing. Many people might "feel" like they are hypoglycemic but they are just on the carbohydrate roller-coaster. I never saw my blood glucose go way to low when I was eating more carbohydrates. If anything it tended to stay high for a while then go back to where it started.

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      Correct all of what you are saying is right. I was referring to the restriction that most people think of, but you are right. I count calories from time to time.
      If you eat in a four hour window, the 20 hr fast keeps you from getting insulin resistant and then you will have access to the stored fat. You store up to 1500 calories as glycogen and the rest as fat. You are right the problem is when you eat small carb meals all day long then you glycogen are never emptied, the frequent meals lead to insulin resistance and weight gain.
      Reactive hypoglycemia is very common, but not everyone on a blood sugar roller coaster will dip into hypoglycemia but many will.

      The problem is insulin block fat burning, meaning you can't excess energy from fat even your glucose level is already low. That's when your metabolism slow down. It never happen if your insulin always low, when you cut out carb from your diet.

      @master of games. Little Voice is right. It would be more difficult because you would have more blood sugar swings, and even if something works for awhile doesn't mean it is optimal in the long run. Eating that volume of food in one sitting is very demanding on your digestion. The older you get the harder it is to digest large amounts of food.
