    I play it on a 6 string. I had to adapt a few spots for the 8, if I recall, mostly either watching how I picked the octave strings, or occasionally playing different strings. Come to think of it, I think I'll play this on a regular 6 string in a webcast on StageIt coming up this thursday... Something I haven't played live very much.

    Hi Pascal, the Zoom part is very straight-forward, I just put in it 4 channel mode, recorded with the built-in mics, and 1 channel with the Taylor pickup. I mixed the two together in Logic, adding a little reverb and a little EQ. The pickup tends to add a bit of beef to the bass

    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 14 lety

    @captbanjo1 Yes, on the AG demo review of this guitar, if I remember right, I demonstrated how you could control the different sounds you can get with a thumbpick and fingers. I definitely find a thumbpick is helpful on baritones for avoiding the mud on the low strings. I don't have this guitar anymore (it was for review), so I can't verify the intonation issues, but I don't recall having any problems with that.

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 14 lety

    @Twoosy Thanks, Roy. Yes, unfortunately, I don't get to keep the review guitars :-) But they're fun to play with while I have them. This model is on my shopping list now, tho! Gryphon had one in and it sold immediately, from what I hear. Maybe they can let you know when this next one arrives before someone snatches it up.

    Thank you for replying! It's a great surprise because I really admire you and your work. About the tuner, I'm really not sure myself. There's an A4 button, which i'm not sure what it's for, but I put it to 440 as the manual said(i threw that somewhere, unfortunately). And there is a "flat" button where I can adjust for who knows. Say, I play a low E, then i press the "flat" button once, i play the low E again and it reads "C". I press it once more then it reads a C#, once more it's D

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 13 lety

    @TravisRinker Sure, tho something capable of reproducing the low end will do it justice a bit more. I think in my video demo for Acoustic Guitar, I played it through my AER Acousticube, a very small amp.

  • @tweedguitar9103
    @tweedguitar9103 Před 9 lety

    This is beautiful. Could it be said that a Baritone is the ideal open tuning guitar ? Pristine A/V production and guitar playing. You put a lot of feeling and emotion behind every note.

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 14 lety

    @WhiteLakeDan In theory, you could tune any guitar down, maybe with heavier strings, but baritone guitars are designed to be tuned down, with a longer scale for better intonation and also a deeper voice. You could certainly mimic the string arrangement by removing strings from a 12-string, but the string spacing wouldn't be optimal. Still, a good way to try it and check out the effect!

  • @Twoosy
    @Twoosy Před 14 lety

    Doug this is really a great lazy afternoon piece of music and I'm glad you composed it for all of us on CZcams. I read that you're in Mountain View. I have been wanting to try out one of these gems from Taylor since learning about baritones in general. Gryphon Palo Alto still has one of these 8-strings on order. Just curious did you have to return this guitar back after writing a review, too?

    Nicely done! I own this guitar and I too use a thumbpick along with fingers. I find it articulates notes very clearly on the bottom end. I'm curious, do you find some intonation issues beyond the fifth fret on the octave string for the fourth string? Mine won't clearly intonate and I think I may have it looked at by a Taylor-certified luthier.

  • @Antonin414
    @Antonin414 Před 12 lety

    Great question! The difference is the tonal range of the instruments. Physically they are no different as I can put my Taylor Baritone into my normal 614ce case. BUT! The strings are tuned down 5 half steps (E drops down to B) - this allows guys like me who have lower vocal ranges to be able to sing comfortably and not sound strained attempting to sing like Robert Plant all the time. It is a long overdue development in music.

  • @DougYoungGuitar

    @mcchung This tune is in AEAEF#B, so it doesn't fit will into a book about DADGAD :-) I actually never tabbed this tune out, sorry.

  • @Twoosy
    @Twoosy Před 14 lety

    Grpyhon has my email. I have only three acoustics: an Esteve Classical, Taylor DN4, and a Tacoma Baritone. I asked Gryphon if they could convert it to an 8-string, but overall the luthier advised to leave it be. The joy of strumming acoustic has come about at my gym; the pilates teacher chooses Celtic, New Age and Irish with sound so clear it's like your in the same room as the composers.
    Hope to hear back from you. Please direct me to your website. Peace brother.

    Hi,
    Would this guitar function tuned to a low spanish E type tuning (BEBEGsharpB) and work well for slide? Also it it possible to avoid the octave strings whilst finger picking, and if necessary remove them or would the 6 string version be a better option?
    Sorry for all the questions but it is a 3 to 500 mile trip try one.

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 12 lety

    I don't know that tuner, but it should work. Is the problem that it doesn't detect the lowered notes, like the low C in the tuning I use on Amazing Grace? You could try to play the 12th fret octave when tuning, getting it an octave up, which might make the tuner work better

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 12 lety

    Hmm, I'm not sure what that feature is for. But I just tune to the "real"notes. So if on a baritone, I'm tuned down to B, I just leave the tuner at the 440 setting, play the 1st string, and make sure it reads "B", and is tune, and so on. You just have to know the notes you're really tuned to. I usually mostly tune using relative pitches, and just use the tuner to verify that I'm not sharp or flat - then touch up by ear, as well.

    @NylonStrungGirl I assume from your handle that you play nylon string, so the steel 8-string may sound a bit brash to you. I liked the sound, and liked the tone better with a thumbpick than without. I don't really hear the tune or the sound as "clunky". Sorry you didn't care for it.

  • @DougYoungGuitar
    @DougYoungGuitar  Před 12 lety

    You could tune a guitar lower, but baritones typically have a longer scale - 27.5 inches in this case, that make the low notes work better. They also tend to just be designed for a lower voice, to resonate at lower frequencies. Think of a baritone singer. A soprano might be able to sing low notes, but they won't have the deep voice of a real baritone.And of course, this particular guitar has 8 strings!

    Why would you use a thumbpick on a song this delicate? I would understand if it was useful in bringing out the octave strings, but the tone that you are getting from it is really clunky and distracting. I hate to be one of those punks, but come on, if you are a teacher and you represent one of the leading guitar magazines you should be more conscious of this kind of thing.
