    *Mountain Man*
(Lyrics :

    *Lyrics:*
Out from the deep of the mountains,
The place of my ancient homeland,
Ridge after ridge I had to trek,
Stream after stream I had to wade.
Again and again, time after time,
My heart and soul is touched.
Step by step, clump after clump,
A firm love for the mountains is out trudged.
Oh, I love you Gezong and Bala, **
    My ancient homeland, my Shangri-La. ** *
Oh, The great mountains! What flows in those earthly brooks
Is the song of my childhood...of my childhood.
On the tree leaves, those dews of the morning,
Out from the mountains, are the sweats of trekking.
Oh, The great mountains never have you forgotten,
Bala Gezong, my ancient homeland deep in the great mountains.

    * *Sina Dingzhu* is the man with a blind left-eye in this music video. He first got out of his hamlet deep in the mountains when he was 10 years old, after an accident happened while he was iron-smiting. His left-eye was injured by a speck of iron bit while hammering. His father brought him out to seek medical help in the county township. They had to trek a treacherous cliffhanger path and long winding mountainous trail for 5 days before they could reach the county township. His left eye was blinded as a result of such a long delay in getting help. That was the first time he saw a city, cars and other modern amenities. On the way back from the township, he told his father he wants to build a road from the outside to his hamlet, so that cars would be able to come in. His father didn't understand what he was talking about...
At age 13, against his parent's objections he ventured out the mountains to seek opportunities, working numerous labor jobs and various small businesses. Eventually, by around 40, he made enough money (about RMB ¥30-40 millions, or US $5 millions), and donated it all to build a road connecting his and four other hamlets deep in the mountains to the outside world. In his words, he wanted to bring his mountain folks out of poverty and backwardness, and not to suffer inconvenience and lack of medical care like he did decades ago. But again he faced objections not only from his father, but unbelievably, also from his village folks!
Against all odds and doubts and suspicions, and even spit on his face by an un-understanding village woman, the road was finally completed. That's the paved road in the music video. It has a total length of 35 km, with 52 hairpin turns. It took him 4 years and all his money + assets sold off + debts raised, to complete. He did not ask for a single penny from the government for assistance in the construction. He father and other villagers finally did turn around to support him. And his father had wanted to ride with him in a car to go back to their hamlet Bala. Unfortunately his father died before the last kilometer of the road was completed.
With further investment, his hamlet Balagezong is now developed into a tourist attraction.
What a man, what a story. A noble mountain man.

    ----------
** *Bala Gezong* : A Tibetan hamlet in northern Yunnan province. "Bala" denotes the people there were originally from Batang county in western Sichuan province. "Gezong" in Tibetan means holy mountains. This place has been settled more 1300 years ago.
    ----------
    From Wikipedia :
** * *Shangri-La* is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel 《Lost Horizon》 by British author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia - a permanently happy land, isolated from the world. In the novel, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living hundreds of years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly aging in appearance. The name also evokes the imagery of the exoticism of the Orient.
    Possible sources for Hilton :
In a New York Times interview in 1936, Hilton states that he used "Tibetan material" from the British Museum, particularly the travelogue of two French priests, Evariste Regis Huc and Joseph Gabet, to provide the Tibetan cultural and Buddhist spiritual inspiration for Shangri-La. Huc and Gabet travelled a round trip between Beijing and Lhasa in 1844-1846 on a route more than 250 kilometres (160 mi) north of Yunnan. Their famous travelogue, first published in French in 1850, went through many editions in many languages. A popular "condensed translation" was published in England in 1928, at the time that Hilton would have been gathering inspiration for - or perhaps writing - Lost Horizon.
    Current claimants :
Today various places, such as parts of southern Kham in northwestern Yunnan province, including the tourist destinations of Lijiang and Zhongdian, claim the title. In modern China, Zhongdian county was renamed Xiānggélǐlā (香格里拉, Shangri-La in Chinese) in 2001, to attract tourists. And the place *Balagezong* in this song is in middle of this region.

Of course it is a Tibetan song! Can't you tell from the Tibetan music elements? He sings about his love for his home village Balagezong 巴拉格宗, how the village had been transformed into a better place and how the villagers are enjoying a happy life there.
