    Over recent months I have noticed a number of unsightly rusty spots erupting on the boat's roof. Some, I assume, are from bits of grit rubbing through the paint as I've walked over it; for others I have no idea as to their origins. All needed tidying up and the rust stopped in its tracks though so in this video I show you my initial attempts, which fall short of a full repaint.
    See me finish the painting at in vlog 224: • 224. Finally! Repainti...

    David, very important to use the right colour paint. I knew a bloke once who painted his boat in camouflage colours. When he finished painting he popped in to a nearby canal-side pub for a beer (and a cheese sandwich). When he came back to where he moored his boat.... he couldn't find it!

I'm a qualified decorator, and if you ask at any Dulux Decorator Centre (not the sheds as in B&Q) they can advise you. I could show you two colours, that to you look the same, but one will have a much lower/higher LRV than the other.

    • @t1n4444
      @t1n4444 Před 4 lety

      Interesting point. However ... because a narrowboat is, usually, of entirely metal construction there is a lot of expansion and contraction through a year, summer to winter.
      On a really hot summer's early afternoon the steel work is almost too hot to touch.
      The paints we use are expected to cope with this movement year in year out.
      Some boats may not be painted in ten to fifteen years, and some for longer than that.
      Ergo if the hard wearing paint you suggest is designed for application on a stable concrete floor it might be that the expansion of the steel may be a job too far for said concrete paint.
      Suitable paint films for steel surfaces are a must, as in fit for purpose. They are not cheap.
      An elaborate repaint, with back to steel preparation, derusting and possibly filling, with painted coach lines and hand painted panels with boats name, plus bow and stern decorative "artwork" might be the thick end of £20,000.
      Even a basic single colour repaint is not much less than £6000.
      The roof of my boat was once repainted in what looked liked "emulsion" over the original paint job.
      It flaked off in no time, goodness only knows what the original owner was thinking.
      What with the high cost of paint jobs a lot of owners are obliged to do the work themselves ... as you can see.

    Enjoyed the vlog as always David, you are one of my favorite narrowboaters. Small tech tip for your uncooperative paint can tops. After opening a new can, use a medium sized flat head screwdriver to punch 4 holes in the top trough of the paint can where the lid fits. This is where the paint accumulates as you take the excess off your brush and when you put the top back on , the drying paint glues it shut. The holes will allow the excess paint to drip back into the can where it belongs thus making for easier lid removal in future. Have a great day and stay safe.

    • @t1n4444
      @t1n4444 Před 4 lety

      @@HenrikWind Hmm, generally fixings to a steel superstructure are a "correct" sized hole subsequently threaded to take a screw. Generally a bolt has a nut. A screw is put into a threaded hole.
      By drilling a hole and then cutting a thread in said hole removes the necessity of getting to the back of the steel plate to place washer(s) and nut.
      Some deck items are welded on and generally this method is used during construction.
      Welding items to a hull post fixing the insulation can result in "issues".
      Which is why welding on sacrificial anodes required a 30 mins firewatch following the welding.

    Hi David. Just a quick note to thank you for the videos. Including painting your roof. You have been a constant source of calm and serenity in our lives. Your videos of cruising and vandemonium are run nightly and alternatively for sleeping. Your voice is soothing and your commentary doesn't grow old. Thanks for your contribution to our lives. Because Denis is away driving, we are not always sure what he has seen so weekends are for him to catch up with you. We love to watch the older ones as well. Be well and God bless

    I just watched you take rust off your roof. And I don't regret it! Strangely calming :)

    Nice one David. Get these little jobs done while the weather is nice.
    When you put the tie up thingy back on, try to sort some flat rubber, like an old bicycle inner tube, cut it to shape to make a gasket between thingy and the boat. Hopefully it will keep the rust at bay longer.

      GARY NICOL a better solution is to use one of the new hybrid adhesive mastics. These form a water tight seal as well as sticking things in place. I’ve used them to bond awning support brackets to my camper roof and they make a perfect seal.

    I like the maintenance videos as much as the CuttingTheCruise, can't wait until you try and rotate the tyres ...

    Put some anti-skid paint such as kiwi grip on the rooftop, will be a nice grippy surface to walk on, non-reflective and will also coverup any imperfections.

    A can of matte clear coat will turn every type of paint into non-glare surface!
    There is something like rhino-liner or kiwi grip even in white available, would make walking on the roof even more safe...
    With your type of narration and comments, fighting rust is funny, too!
    Thx for the vid!

    Watching you do this is as satisfying as picking spots. (In case you are confused, yes, it's a compliment).

    Perhaps if you had used a marker pen to join up all the dots and spots you would have ended up with a nice mural.

    My dad showed me this series on amazon and I gotta say. I really enjoy it, something nice and calming before bed. We’ve been recently watching on CZcams and I thought I’d give the subscribe button a good old whack partly because I love the content but also so I can tell my dad when a new video is up so we can sit and watch it togeather

    Funny how the simplest of jobs turns into a task requiring all manner of skills and many many different tools. Recently repainted the tunnel flashes only for 2 rather vicious swans to come and peck away at the stern plate of the boat causing me to abandon job and paint to dry in the most horrible fashion. Your boat should look great when you eventually leave the marina .😁
