A few weeks ago, I sanded down and touched up a load of rusty spots on my narrowboat's roof but I didn't then have the chance to finish the job and overcoat the whole thing in its entirety. I was also unsure what paint to use. Now, at last, I have had a few days of decent weather and got the whole thing done.

Awwww! So much love for Bob Ross, well-deserved. I didn't know he was such an international sensation until I watched Peep Show where they said "Let's see what God is up to" and turned on Bob. Lovely.
That's a gorgeous color. I love/hate The Peeling of the Tape as it's too much stress to see if I left any weak spots to ruin the line.
Aha! The holey armpit T shirt. I think every crafty person has one. It's always a sad day when it's more hole than shirt and gets chucked away. Great job, David!
I don't agree that you amuse yourself over much when doing these videos. I think you do if exactly enough. I recognized your salute to Bob Ross straight off and it amused me, too! Thanks!
How many passers by said `painting your roof then ?'......!
That's funny
Is there a book open on this?
I say 7
My God, I'm actually watching paint dry!
Whilst watching this, I had this sudden urge to paint my living room. Luckily, it only lasted a few minutes.
Ah, just what I needed, a reminder of why I'm going to pay out an arm and a leg, to have my boat stripped to bare metal and repainted!!
NOT because you didn't make a great job of it, but it bl@@dy hard work, and despite having repainted two of our previous boats (one WAS stripped to bare metal!), I'm too old and knackered to do it myself any more!!
Non the less, very entertaining!!
You brought tears to my eyes when you took the mickey out of Bob Ross. I once went to one of his demonstrations, and it upset me for many days to learn that he had died.
😂 love a bit of Bob Ross ♥️
Hilarious bit.
Only you could make a video that is practically just 'watching paint dry' and yet I was disappointed that it didn't go on longer!
Please paint something else on your boat soon!
The Bob Ross homage was spot on
That was a proper tribute to a man that is still missed. Thank for the call back to him!
It's strangely satisfying watching someone else doing voluntarily what you're supposed to be doing under duress to 'tidy the place up for Christmas'
One benefit of Christmas now being restricted to one day is that the ' much loved extended family' will be staying at home in Wales
I'm heartbroken 😭🤣
Bit like watching paint dry😂 Another great video - keep them coming.
Damm, I was waiting for the shot of you kneeling in a 2 foot square patch in the middle of the roof wondering how you were going to get off, and wondering how long you'd have to wait for the paint to dry ... that's probably what I'd have ended up doing :)
If the boat had been any wider, that would definitely have happened.
Love the Bob Ross tribute. Great job with the paint! You are so neat and professional. Cheers!
So it is a comment on the sad state of the world that we all get such pleasure watching a man's paint dry! Well done you.
I was watching this during a little break at work at my desk and I ended up laughing out loud with your splendid Bob Ross parody!! Kind of embarrassed myself!!
No apologies, I like it when you’re silly!
Hear hear 😂
Cruising TheCut is one of the things that has made the last six months of lockdown , better. It's 10 to 20 min of headphones on, world off. Thank you.
Thank you :-)
Humm, who knew watching someone paint a narrow boat roof would be as exciting as, well, watching paint dry. ;)
Love the color and now realize I will watch anything if there is a narrow boat in it.
Yep. 🤣😂🤣
Almost as good as watching the grass growing.
LoL. I'm as addicted to narrow boats as you..
Honestly, me too!
Ah nothing like a Cruising the cut vlog when you're off work sick 👍🏻
That was brilliant , very amusing , great Vlog again Bob/ David
I am literally watching a video of paint drying - only CtheC could make me do that - bravo
I almost fell out of my chair with "The Joy of Painting" bit. Nicely done!
Bob Johns seems like a likeable chap lol. I spat my tea out onto the floor with laughter when he popped up.
You need to get a carton, or two, of those paper booties that I have seen doctors and home service folks wearing... just have a pair or two on you during a cruise in the event you need to walk the roof.
No thanks required for this brilliant solution to your dilemma.
Can’t believe I just spend 10 minutes watching paint dry! 😊
Having a sense of humour is essential and Bob Ross would have been proud of that intro.🤗
Nice one Bob!
Imagining you with a Bob Ross haircut made me spill my coffee.
If I'd had access to a suitable wig, I'd have worn it ... now that would have been fun.
The roof looks really good! You channel Bob Ross very well! As always, we enjoyed your vlog. Stay safe!
Thanks, you too!
I know pandemic boredom has fully set in when I’m perfectly willing to watch paint dry...
I think I could of watched this at a lower rate of speed
🤣😂🤣😂
It's even better watching someone else apply the paint that you're watching dry
You’ve finally managed it, David - I am sitting here, literally watching paint dry...
You do need to get some knee pads, though - it hurts to watch you working without them. Decent ones are only about £10 in B&Q or similar.
Loved the Bob Ross impression
I've watched all the Cruising the Cut videos and I truly must say that the quality of each video is impeccable. Huge fan of the channel
Thank you :-)
Ah, well, it was fun while it lasted. I will truly miss all your wonderful cruising vlogs. Hopefully you will replace these with exciting vlogs of you admiring your beautiful roof. :D
Thanks Again for some great entertainment ... and the Bob. Ross bit was so funny. I wasn’t expecting it and I knew immediately with your first two words that you were going to do Bob. Keep on bringing it on !
My masking tape never comes off like that. David, how can you make a roof painting video interesting and humorous? Great job.
The blue looks Mediterranean! Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the roof colour! My favourite bit of painting is always the clean up and then treating myself to a cup of tea! Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦👍
I would never have thought I could be entertained by watching someone paint a roof. But I was!! Very satisfying and now I wont have to keep saying "He still hasn't finished his roof" Looks great! Well done :)
Hahaha cheers
A screwdriver! Stirring paint with a screwdriver! Carruthers......fetch my horsewhip, and prepare the flogging tree.
LOVE THAT ONE.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant!
You should always use the right tool..
That being the one Right next to you.
Was that the proper screwdriver from the boxed set that is marked as Paint Stirrer?
I've got a huge 12" long 1/2 " flat blade screwdriver that used to belong to my Great Grandfather and must be knocking on to well over 100 years old now that gets used to remove paint tin kids, stir paint in opened tins and as a general lever and progger of things that you dont want to really stick your finger in
I'm surprised that given the original owner was a time served cabinet maker in the shipyards I'm not haunted for the abuse this poor tool has had over the last 40 years or so by my hands
As life goes on I must admit I like watching paint dry.
Well Done Young David - I trust you treated both yourself & the swans to a cheese sandwich reward for being elegant.
Loved the jazzy tunes while sanding and laughed out loud with the Bob Ross impersonation! Leaving a comment at only 2:28 into the video. Well done, one again!
Nice job. The Bob Ross impression made me Chuckle
Your conundrum of how to put on the second coat without standing on the first coat is troublesome. But I remember something similar, when asked about taping a piece of buttered toast to the back of a cat and dropping the cat/toast unit from a short distance from the floor. When the unit approaches the floor, does it go into a hover as the cat attempts to land on its feet while the toast tries equally hard to land buttered side down?
Yes, I to like watching anthing with a narrow boat. I love the "Not a vlog" parts. Great to run as scenery in background.
Beautiful job! And I must say that I really like laying on my couch and watching someone else work so hard. If you never cruise again, I will gladly watch you doing whatever you decide to do. I can always watch Anna and Kath, or Floating our Boat, If I want to see cruising.
I was watching one of your videos and seeing that you were draining your loo tank, one suggestion I have for you to keep the head fresher smelling is to put a bag of dishwasher pouches in the toilet and flush with about five gallons of water, bearing the size of your holding tank. The movement of the boat and for my case caravan, traveling agitates the cleaner and water scrubbing the tank, then drain at your next convenience, it keeps things smell free. Try it sometime, I have used it in as large as a 25 gallon tank.
That Bob Ross bit, the font, the name and the aspect ratio absolutely golden
🤣👍
What a coincidence; I just commented on #215 about that... ten minutes ago. :)
You are hilarious. Loved the Bob Ross tribute. Both you and Bob Ross are in my newsfeed every day. I think Mr. Ross would like your happy little boat. Thanks for your humor. Much appreciated.
2:00 That is hilarious Bob Johns. Had a great laugh on that one.
Excellent work on this maintenance project and I also appreciated your Bob Ross segment.
I never thought I'd be interested. But I've watch all your vlogs it's really interesting keep up the good work
Jelly good! So British, so good to hear. I truly love all things British. The home of my ancestors. A place I’ve never been to, but love. Thank you so much for bringing to me a little bit of England.. 🙂 (John B)
Thank you for the laughs with your Bob Ross references and the paint "colors" across the bottom of the screen! 😆 Then learning you have to levitate to put on the second coat of paint! Nice prep and paint job as well.
Cheers!
A bit of advice from someone who has been there
After the paint has truly dried and cured for perhaps a week
Take one of your sneakers-I believe trainers is the correct word in Britain- anyway take one of them and go find a mud puddle in the parking lot -car park?- as I said find a mud puddle and take your shoe to it and grind the heel into the mud very thoroughly; then carefully carry it back over to the boat and choose a place on the newly painted roof, and holding the shoe firmly by the toe give the roof a food smart whack with the muddy heel
There, all done, the first mark, now you dont have to worry about it anymore ;-)
Noooo. That's like getting a brand new car and hitting the fender with a hammer. I am such a stickler about these type of things, I would probably have roof sneakers. Sneakers that would be used to only walk on the roof with. Well, for a while anyway.
@@thecatatemyhomework mr. White has a way with freshly bathed women as well.
There's people who would pay good money to have the sole of a trainer/sneaker applied to themselves, be it clean or muddy, but as they say there are specialist channels for such things
@@thecatatemyhomework why use boots or sneakers when you can use socks?
Lovely colour David. All you have to do now is paint rest of the boat. Lol
This is such a good channel that I don't mind watching the paint go on, or the paint drying.
No alizaron crimson? Good job Bob, you can count your scrapes as ‘happy little accidents.’
We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents. Let’s get crazy.
David,
Love your video logs. Here in the United States we have many canals, most of which are in complete disrepair. The closest canal system to where I live is from the late 19th century. This canal system is called the Illinois Michigan canal or (IMI). When it was built, it was intended to take business away from St. Luise Missouri, which it did Very well. After the Railways came through it unfortunately was no longer necessary and to costly to maintain. As I watch you I can only dream of doing the same on this defunct canal, as I pass farms, small towns and friendly people. Keep up the wonderful video logs, and I will keep on dreaming....
Lovely Bob Ross and kudos for really knowing your br. Cadmium yellow and beating the devil out of it, like he says when he does it! Cheers man for this channel and the history, chuckles and information!
Man that was better than watching grass grow😋
Well done, you read the data sheet. This is essential with modern paints as they are far more technical in their manufacture and application. Being on the water humidity is always an issue along with dew point and using a dedicated marine paint, International, is the right way to go.
So I somehow must put a second coat on by levitating myself over the paint... LMAO pure GOLD
Colour actually looked beautiful from above.
You're funny, even when painting the roof of a boat. Made me chuckle, thanks.
CC, there are these wonderful objects called Kneepads that make work like that less harmful on your knees, and for us watching less painful to see.
I see in the last bit of the video how to make the next job of painting the roof easier, just attach a brush to your drone
Fear not, the knees are fine
2:03 -- LOL You imitate "Bob Ross" too well. Must have watched a few of his videos.
The Bob Ross bit was well done, nice job :)
I just about pissed myself when the Bob Ross imitation came out! Awesome!
Bob would love that
You can't go cruising if you can't walk on the roof, and you won't walk on the roof for fear of marring the paint. Is it official then? Are you changing the name of your channel to Mooring the Cut?
I've already got the Twitter handle for it ;-)
'Mooring The Marina' /jk
You can wear your shoes inside the boat,
but you have to take them off to cruise
cause its SOCKS ONLY on the new roof paint
For those unable to to take their traners off. One can obtain some super over soles made of high quality linen and cotton. So as not to mark the boat. I can only imagine the state of your roof, veg garden ?
Socks David, socks. With little spots on the bottom to stop you slipping. The blue is perfect 👍✨
Watching paint dry was quite enjoyable, I don't know why they say otherwise.
Was anticipating this vid since the touch up earlier. You’ve outdone it again. Thanks for the entertainment!
Can I open my eye snow,I just couldn't stand seeing you fall in .
Ah ok, wow what a nice shade of blue ,now I see your subtle choice of colour .On nice days it will just look blue but on dull days it will project on to the clouds and it will seem sunny everyday you' re a crafty one David you deserve a bonus Cheese sandwich for.this.
Cheers
Love the Bob Ross tribute! 👏
I simply loved the Bob Ross imitation and as Billy Jay said Bob would have been proud that you thought of him. Great video all around.
Well, if you can't amuse yourself, then what's the point? Great video and the narration, as always, is so fun.
You can make watching paint dry interesting.
Nice work. It is like the sky. I feel you add some clouds; that would bring some Bob Ross to your rooftop.
Wow great job done Time for tea All trades men stop for tea he he he best wishes Ken and Christine
Looks great! Loved the Bob Ross bit, too. :-)
Thanks! 😊
Perfect shade of blue. Well done! Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy your humor! 😉
Your Bob Ross was spot on. Thanks for the laugh.
I LOVED the homage to Bob Ross. Well done!
Haha! Love the Bob Johns character!
Laughed out loud twice, at 2:15 and at 6:15, thanks!
I am so pleased by "The Joy of Painting Narrowboats with Bob Johns". Subscribing right away.
The Richard Attenborough take-off was hilarious.....you need a medal or the canal waters are starting to erode those little grey cells....LOL....
David, Some tips from a fellow boater and professional painter:
1. From the health and safety board, a man of your advancing years needs to wear knee pads, my knees hurt watching you.
2. Take a nail, and gently punch a hole in the rim of the paint can, when you pour, the paint that collects in the rim will drain back into the can.
3. A section of tape adhered to the top 1/2 inch of the vertical side of the can will act as a pour spout, the tape will break the viscosity of the paint and dripping will be minimal.
Love your channel
Cheers, my knees were fine. It's not like I do it often. I don't understand tip 3 but will try that sometime.
Funny David, when a friend says he's going to repaint something on a multi-day project I usually run the other way but through the magic of you tube I and almost 50,000 other folks will watch you work. Looks good sir.
That David Attenborough impersonation was spot on. If you closed your eyes you would -fall asleep- think it was him.
Errrrrrrrrr
A good job as always Sir with a hint of Bob Ross minus the bird nest hair!
Wax on Wax off , thanks for sharing the adventures
Cor blimey, that man! First he complains loudly about needing to own a jetpack to put the paint on, then at 8:00 he clearly demonstrates he obviously does own one...!
What you need is a pair of Slippers for the roof . Great job David
The Japanese use different slippers for each room. What do you need? Roof slippers !! :D Btw The time
lapses are so cool and fun to watch ! Nice vlog : ))
