      My cousin had a Red Ear slider baby about 10 yrs ago. We thought it would be funny to name it Flash ( we hoped it was male). We saw it run hella fast once it got more bigger and we were surprised. Flash lived up to his name. We also got lucky it was male, they are smaller than females. My cousin still has his turtle flash, but I will say Flash has a little temper 😂 he still cute.

    You shouldn't give your tortoises carrots, iceburg lettuce, peppers or tomatos daily as they are bad for them! As you can clearly see your tortoises have Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) which is the bumps/lumps/pyramids on their shells. MBD is where a tortoises bones grow abnormally/become soft etc. Due to bad diet and lack of UV light which comes naturally from the sun or UV lights in the tortoise table. Also to top it off you SHOULD NOT be misting their table as they are not of a tropical breed. I am very concerned about your tortoises. I highly suggest that you take them to the vet, if you have not already, and get them checked up on. You should really know what you should and shouldn't be feeding them as you should have looked into what their dietry needs and etc. are. Please do NOT do what this lady is doing daily with her tortoises as they WILL obtain MBD! Thank you.

    • @TheGreatPetShop
      @TheGreatPetShop  Před 6 lety +120

      Festive Squid24 I have never fed them iceberg lettuce and one of them does have pyramiding. You should not be "very concerned" about my tortoises. And I'm completely aware of what MBD is and stands for. I did go to the vet with all of my tortoises and the one with the worst pyramiding doesn't have any signs of illness (internally or that affect her day to day life), I have done x-rays and blood tests on all 3 of my tortoises and so far so good. But they did come to me anemic, so that might influence it somehow. They all share the same diet and some develop fine and other pyramid. I keep improving their diet each and every day, trying to improve it as much as possible. I do research and speak to my exotic animals vet for information. I'm sorry if you disagree with my tortoise care choices but they are not suffering in any way.

      I also thought I saw some pyramiding on the Sulcata. I thought that the daily feeding was not exactly what you’re supposed to be feeding them. We have one that’s one and a half years old and I thought that you’re supposed to be feeding them mostly grass and hay. We also feed some flowers, leaves & wheat grass. Some vegetables have a lot of sugar!

  • @owentobias6651
    @owentobias6651 Před 6 lety +226

    You have 2 different species of tortoises being kept together. This could lead to the spread of pathogens and potentially make them very sick. Sulcatas need 70% grasses and 30% safe weeds and need a higher basking and night temperatures. Red bulbs and coil bulbs can damage their eyes so you need to change it. The substrate used in the basking area needs to be change to top soil. This is because your current substrate can old fungus spores and lead to an upper respiratory infection which could kill all of your tortoises. Tortoise husbandry is always changing and updating.

      I APOLOGIZE I NEVER MEANT TO ASK ALL THIS N TYPE A NOVEL AND PLEASE U IN NO WAY HAVE TO READ A WORD OR ANSWER. I THANK YOU EITHER WAY SO MUCH. U JUST SEEM VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE CUZ AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH I KNOW U ARE 100% correct with substrate which is controversial. I just havent been able to all natural no chemical free top soil. So to me the next best is the coconut fiber. Omg sorry here is where I started. Sorry if Confusing or don’t finish thought I am about to throw this phone rn. Can I ask how do u prepare your play sand to remove all the dust. I just pour some water in kitchen sink size tub and add sand and just make to where it’s damp covered but damp. I been using the coconut brick u have to add I do hotter water and break up till moist? But my whole issue is have to build own table. Person who bought me as gift got huge glass tank. I argue everyday day that she doesn’t have what she needs n she could get harmed and not even be aware. I say she needs thermostat that regulates heat timer and humidity. There’s no humidity in their now. I can’t set it up right with stuff I have. And with medical issues I would of known I wouldn’t have money needed to have exactly what she needs n I won’t freak out everyday thinkin im hurting her. She is Russian sorry 2 yr. I had to take her hot/ cold log but out she would get angry more sassy attitude I should say and climb up crazy and I found her upside down twice last time how she was totally freaking I am petrified I took everything out except for i temp made very hard cardboard tall all black but she moves it around sleeps in one day then behind other and she has numerous slates she lays on Cuz flat floor heater under just about ft long I’d say n slate covers whole area. It’s under the glass. Then mix of substrate over hut is ceramic night heat lamp, then middle of tank is 150 heat lamp measured to where I researched I forgot then next to that I uvb light. She has little rubber turtle friends from child’s claw machine washed with dawn. That’s ok right? N two fake little trees. I have two thermometers on left side for both n then digital garbage on right. So first tank is way too small it’s like 5 ft wide I’d say n 2.5 high guessing idk gallon. First thing says never that. So I want to build her l shaped length of both id say 10 foot walls just do one level( I wanted to make bilevel with slatted damp not steep with sanded plexi glass on sides then top her hot area to sun bath with uvb with foot wide slate rock for nails n Beak have actual thermostat that regulates all temps n humidity and plant little patch of grass aloe plant, dandelion, n on top and bottom have Dre flowers she can eat and graze leisurely but also feel daily her Romaine( she likes very crunchy lettuce Recommend? The red lettuce fresh is little n green not as much. Collard, and spring mix had soft ones she Dont like, I try mustard they soft too. I add radish (comes in bag) I used to buy like 7 different fresh types n they wilt quick n seem all soft except romaine, I give two cut small baby carrots and yellow squash I use veggie cleaner spray and scrub outside I assume skin is best nutrients. I was getting small bell peppers and adding just a sliver I used to get riddachio? Is that one better than another. She I don’t think minded that just a few ripped off pieces. I even got fresh parsley n added couple little pieces. She does not like any one cubewatermelon or one. Cut small strawberry. She never ate when I offered. Fresh Aloe Vera? Little green apple I showed her other turtle eating n she was locked looking. No cheese or banana or cherry tomato, onion? I just feel she doesnt have a fav she goes wild for like most love dandelion n strawberry is like their treat but not her. I want to give her something she’ll love love. I’ll take any suggestions feel like I’m missing something. Oh I sprinkle calcium and Herbalite on n toss. Just little so she don’t need daily? She always looks like partying witg Escobar. Any way to make them want to stay in bath longer. I can only get 10 min till she is freaking. Every other day sometime go two since so short. So tell me how to keep the humidity for her. N she don’t like it too hot like she should have it’s open top of glass and lights hang down. Don’t like at all. Do u suggest just one level table top ? I never explained lower level and sleep area. But where can I got hide I can moist that she can’t climb n fall? Oh that would be up top n bottom woulf be just ceramic heat for night n cool Hyde I thought maybe to side I can put little slate and heater she likes under there. Even thought it’s. Cold for day but heater for night there ot have separate sleep area? Same substrate on both levels or if one level. I used tk mist her but long ago. Now she don’t like that at all she gets mad. And how do I Contain the humidity ? After spraying substrate Hyde too? I mean once I get new ones. Where keep thermostat? I’m so sorry. I just have been nuts over this and u seem to know. I feel dumb for half these but I want to make sure she has what she needs. Is it bad to take her when I go to hotel hour away? I bring her one heat light only. I need to get the bulb that’s both in one right? And she likes to be out of tank when I hear her stirring I get let her roam freely. No bad things on floor but she’ll like to stay out all day some days or all night some times. I always put her back to warm up and eat in morning and she’ll bask sometimes she’ll stAy for two days n sleep thru or she’ll wAnt right out. I take her outside rn it’s only been few times recent but I’m ganna build her. A outdoor cage where this huge bird almpst got duck next door we had to fight him he’s huge falcon or eagle with attitude n thinks it’s his whole yard. N stand (I only seen shadow of big bird I never actually seen what he is. They talk of him like he’s enormous so I hover over her walks don’t go more then two 3 feet. I’m ganna get baby pool n I have half inch flat rock to put in with just inch or so of water. N get actual carrier. Is it bad to take them out of box or carrier to look out window while car moving. She seems to love it ans watches but obviously too Much she poops more watery and a lot of urine sprays. I always thought they only secreted white chalky moist paste for urine cuz no Uric acid. I freaked when first happened but saw videos of others doing it too? I’m worried she is not pooping right. I was in hosp past 25 days so he won’t look for that which is sad. But I made made sure she went few times before left. Cuz she doesn’t that I ever find and I look and clean when she out but not much in tank. Warm baths used to do it. Not no more. Is it bad to makw it warmer then Luke warm. I Ike to give it where I check my wrist like baby bottle. N I add water drops. She’s never been to vet. I’m starting new work soon n will take her to reptile specialist. Scared she is dehydrated oh always have clean water dish. Plastic like 4 inch odd shape oval. With bottle spring water. She drinks bath water I like to see. Ok I’m done I’m so sorry. I will tell u in beggining you in no way have to read or answer any of it. I feel like an idiot. Oh well if I don’t explain like I did I’ll never get answers I need so I’m not scared to death every day n this week I’m ganna build her her new table. I’ll see your suggestions. Thank you so so much. U have no idea how much this means. I can’t sleep over it. In hospital I would of snuck her in if I wouldn’t be breaking laws and rules. Lol.

    I saw the young girl playing with something
    I got curious and upon closer inspection i got a shock to see she was playing with a baby live turtle
    I turned to her Mother and asked "this is no way to be managing a baby turtles life"
    As i said i know very little of their care but on research i now know and how shockingly cruel this little baby was been treated
    I cant get the image of its little face out of my mind
    I wanted to grab it from them and run to a nearby pet store or some place with the knowledge and care for it
    The mother just gave me a smirk
    Took the baby turtle from her daughter and shoved it into her pocket and said "its warm in there, travels with us all the time"
    How sad for this little guy
    Its no suprise that people like ye that are un educated and no respect

    Hey, you said that you didn’t use a food bowl, because this way it is easier for you. But the claws of your tortoises seem really long. You can use a feedingplate made out of stone instead of pouring the food on the substrate. It would be way more hygienic and your pets would keep their claws short, because feeding plate is made out of stone stone :)

    I don't think it's a smart to keep two different species of tortoises in one cage because they are very territorial and they could kill each other,also putting food on the ground where they walk around and poop in could make them sick,and putting three different species of tortoises in the same bath tub could also make them sick,Doing them separate could be the smarter idea,Also not only should they not live together sharing the same food especially the amount you put is not the amount that each of them should get.
    EDIT:Also they should not share the same water bowl because it could also make them sick

    You have two species of tortoise who need different things.. I could write a freaking book but to name a few things that need to be changed.... first You don't mist a sulcatas enclosure. They're from the desert. Second the substrate you have in there can grow mold and it can even be dangerous as far as the tortoises eating it since you just throw the food on top
    Make some changes. They are your responsibility. I really hope no one watches this video and takes your "advice"

      @TheGreatPetShop  Před 6 lety +20

      *KING SERPENTS!* *KING SERPENTS!* I don't know which tortoise you are referring to but I would guess it's the one with the most pyramiding. She doesn't look healthy at all (I know) but believe it or not, she's the one that hasn't shown any signs of disease (besides MBD). I'm aware of what it is and what causes it, and (in case you didn't know) it can be caused my low humidity. So misting the enclosure a few times a week just to push that humidity a little bit higher is not going to kill them. Besides, when this video was filmed, it was Summer time and summer where I live is extremely dry. They do have a water bowl to drink and sometimes I even put some spagnum moss for them to enjoy (and they do). Back to the sick tortoise: I have done blood tests and X-rays and there is nothing wrong with her internally. She has the exact same diet has the other two and they live perfectly happy together. The other ones develop quite normally. It's hard for captive tortoises not to develop some pyramiding and (as my exotic animals veterinarian said) they are pretty good for captive tortoises. Now you might even give examples like one CZcams channel called Kamp Kenan where the guy has them "captive". He lives in one of the best places to keep tortoises (Florida) and he keeps a lot of sulcatas there. And in case you don't know, it's very humid down there. So misting here, will most likely not be a problem.
      And sorry to disagree but what's causing the extinction of tortoises and animals in general is humanity and its development , not specifically UVB light bulbs.

      They're not bad from time to time. The main problem is that they have a huge amount of water and very few nutrients, so they should never be the main food. Unfortunately, most people feed their tortoises with them almost every day, along with lettuce and tomatoes. On the other hand, given the high water content, they're very useful if the turtle suffers from dehydration.
      If you have tortoises, you should ask for advice to a vet specializing in exotic animals, because the food and needs vary between species. But in general, a good diet should be based on clovers, dandelion, chicory, arugula, chinese rose/common rose (only flowers). And please, make sure all the food is organic.

So the neibors would always bring him back and also the lady that lives up the block. My only two worry's is that a cat attacks him or he does not come back. One day my dad put him outside and went to the store. We had a rule to not leave him alone. He did not tell anybody and the tortise escaped. Winter was coming. And he still did not come back. It has been 4 months since. I spent nights crying and looking for him. And I was not just me. My whole home that has ten family members in it! They would tell me to go to bed but I would secretly sneek out for like 5 minutes extra hoping he was there. I guess tortises are pretty fast 😞😭

    Totally agree with the people saying this advice is wrong. I got handed a tortoise a few years back. Had to do a lot of research on how to keep one. Because I didn't want an unhealthy pet.
    The substrate is wrong
    The diet is wrong
    There's no calcium on the food only the vitamins. Torts need calcium.
    The beaks are over grown, the way to keep the beak nice and trim is to put their food on a piece of slate.
    The baths need to be at least every other day as they don't tend to drink water. The water they take comes in through their arse's.
    So much worng with this advise.

    Quick bath . Good care. I do think a bigger enclosure would be happier. Do they get to be outside in nature
    But watched? I hope so.
    I found a turtle in China town nyc. He was ready for turtle soup. I took him home n kept Henry for
    5 years. Then I had to move so I passed Henry to a friend who promised dedication but she betrayed me n gave Henry to a pet shop.
    He was a Diamond Back Terrapin. I still miss him. Bad decision, young. But no one I knew would care for him.

    We owned a two tortoises and we just let them roam our garden freely. never fed them or anything. We had them for over 15 years before my brother took them.

      How big are they?

    • @kondjanegongo796
      @kondjanegongo796 Před 2 lety

      @@babynieve9612 They wernt that big, we got them already grown, length about 25cm. If you want larger ones (we also had but gave them away, about 80cm) you gonna have to feed them and activly look after them.
      We did have a large yard, with tons of lawn , flowers, bushes, duck pond and we switched on the sprinklers daily so they have enough water and food.

    I thought you weren’t supposed to mist tortoise enclosures because they come from hot places. The damp can damage there shells.

      Not really there’s different types of species like grassland which have quite a high humidity in fact barely any tortoise species come from arid places
