  • Are you good enough to be a ski instructor? Today Jamie and I discuss the level of the guests that arrive to SIA as the largest ski and and snowboard company worldwide. With examples from a recent course we will show the level that students arrive into resort. Although there is a broad spectrum of experience we see that all of the students need assistance to achieve the goal of becoming a ski instructor.
If you are interested to know if you are good enough to start the journey as a ski instructor then this video analysis will help you. You will see from the examples that everyone is different and even the strong skiers need a lot of work.

As an aspiring instructor, it's quite informative. Love the footage of the students, such variety. :)

It seems like they could just send you a video of them skiing, and you could tell from that their level.

Do you think for Landes 1 it’s worth coming out earlier than the course start date to refresh all the basics from Anwärter?

  • @davidsamuelmcclelland5596

could you send me prices and dates of availability or maybe a cobntact number ? as i am hoping to fit this in around my work schedule. Thanks

8:06 Nice positions of the poles bro. Wannabe ski-instructor LOL. I didn't see anyone THAT bad at my first instructor course (Antwärter), and if I had I would have laughed my ass off. Seriously. Anyway, the level of the rest of the group was fairly low as well, so I don't know who he is talking about when saying "better skiers". Nobody has ever taught these kids to carve aka ski properly and they want to instruct? wow.

Showing Hard carved Turns intimidates students if they came here to learn. If they just want to be entertained, then those turns accomplish that.
Everything you need to know about ski teaching can be learned at your desk or in your living room. No need to get on the snow. So, you can be a well-trained instructor in one day and then you will be all set for the coming winter. That goes for the students also. Understanding skiing just isn't that hard. If it's made hard, then there is money to be made!
Let's have some fun evaluating performance.
3:05 Judging by the upper body positioning, this person is making the turns primarily on their inside ski. The upper body positioning should be toward the bottom of the hill, not in the direction of the turn which puts you over and on that inside ski.
3:30 Lots of steering with the shoulders. This comes from Thinking about Turning instead of how to position your upper body and change your weight to allow the skis to make the turns for you. Both these skiers would have a lot of trouble on steeps and ice and with speed control.
3:45 Same with this skier except the steering is in the legs instead of the shoulders. You don't try to force your skis to make turns in any way. If you do, you will end up in all the wrong places on your skis and control of your grip and speed will be a big problem.
    3:55 Upper body steering.
4:04 Better, but! Still a Push at the end to make the skis finish the turn which kicks the skis out from under her which puts her on the inside ski and stops the skis from finishing the turn. Notice how the skis go straight after the initial turn is made. They change direction, they don't turn.
4:15 By far the best so far. 4:20 She needs to keep the upper body more vertical for a better edge bite. Notice how her skis bend and turn compared to the previous skier.
All skier problems from beginner to Olympic racer come from One bad source so all students can be clumped together, and one fix will solve all their problems. Not on the slope, but right in their homes. You don't need the distractions and anxiety of a mountain to cloud your mind. What skiing Looks and feels like is a byproduct of your input. Teaching the look and feel doesn't create the understanding that is needed. The people you just watched have Understanding Issues only!!!

Hi! Thank you for your detailed and full analysis from your perspective. It is super to see you take the time to evaluate others and this helps your understanding further. You say a few times about skiing can be learnt from your living room and maybe you can elaborate at some point when you have time. Great stuff!

You don't have to be a skier to be a good ski instructor. You just need to understand what the skis need from you and why they will turn when you give it to them and explain it to a beginner in words they can understand and thus, remember. Sure, it helps to be a skier first but if you are explaining turning in the wrong way, like 99% of the world's instructors, then what are you accomplishing?

And how do I find someone who explains it correctly?I often listen to instructors and they all teach in different ways. But this is half the trouble. They are also difficult to explain.
