Meteora typically refers to a rock formation in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka. The word "Meteora" translates to "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" in Greek. The area is famous for its unique geological formations, where immense rock pillars rise abruptly from the ground. These pillars are topped with impressive monasteries, which were built by monks seeking isolation and spiritual retreat during the Byzantine era.
The Meteora monasteries are significant religious and cultural landmarks, attracting tourists and pilgrims from around the world. The monasteries, perched atop the towering cliffs, offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Today, several of these monasteries are still active, housing communities of monks and nuns.
