- Chapter three of the CAPCHROMOLOGICAL video series where we look at every single Capcom game in chronological order. This video sets sail to scour the depths to uncover the history of Capcom's third arcade release, Pirate Ship Higemaru.
Fun fact: Momotaru's name is a pun and a portmanteau of the Japanese folklore hero, Momotarou, and "taru" (たる) which means barrel in Japanese. (Thanks KSG-7!)

great video! I love how cute the pirates sprite art is haha. The sequel is fascinating and I want to try to play through it, too bad we didnt get a proper localized version.
Thanks dez!! I believe the sequel has a fan translation. It’s pretty fun!
This is one of the games I was waiting to hear about! I have the Famicom game, but it looks like the original arcade game might be more fun to play.
Honestly, the controls are a little clunky in this one at times and some of the stages get pretty unfair, but it’s pretty interesting. I think the Famicom version is where they really got everything right, but that’s still a few years down the road for this video series. 😅
Another cool video! The game design of Higemaru is very reminiscent of the much older Pengo, by Coreland and SEGA. I never knew about the Famicom sequel! I do like to think that Capcom's Goof Troop is a bit of a spiritual sequel in disguise, however. It's very apparent in the first stages with the pirates walking around single screen areas and you being able to toss barrels at them.
Thank you!! Yeah, Pengo definitely had to be an influence on Higemaru for sure!
Higemaru Makaijima is definitely worth a playthrough and it has a fan translation as well. There’s also a bunch of Ghosts ‘n Goblins enemies that make cameos in it which is pretty cool.
I’ve had a few other people bring up Goof Troop as being a spiritual sequel in the comments which I had never played. Pretty crazy! I actually added in a part about it that will be in the full “All 1984 Games” compilation video.
Thanks for watching man!
Very interesting, thank you for these videos!
Fun fact: the name Momotaru is a portmanteau of the folk hero "Momotaro" and the word "taru", which means barrel.
Thanks so much! And I had no idea that Momotaru's name was actually a pun. That's really interesting! I'm going to add this to the video description and give you credit.
I don't know how many times I re-watched the beginning of all 3 videos so far. I'm liking this series! I'm looking forward to seeing the Gunsmoke, Magic Sword, and Megaman episodes.
Thanks a ton!! I had so much fun making the little intro section. Magic Sword and Mega Man are still pretty far off sadly, but Gun.Smoke is right around the corner.
@RewindArcade I suspected Gunsmoke to be near by since that is one of Capcom's earliest releases.
I been waiting for this, excelente job as always, one of my favorites games on the msx. Amazing video!
Thank you so much! It's been great learning about so many of these Capcom games which often get swept aside.
i consider myself a capcom fanboy. i have most of their games in all forms and formats and was even a fighters edge member and , living in the states, imported the capcom dual stick console recently. I consider Pirate Ship Higemaru my favorite capcom game of all time, with Don't Pull! being close behind. Pengo is one of my all time favorite games, so it stands to reason this would be right up there for me. Thanks for the History lesson, great video! subscribed!
That's awesome! There was definitely some major inspiration from Pengo in this one, haha. Thanks for watching and for the sub!
Woooo! Another one of my favorite arcade games. Well done as always guy!
Thanks man!!
I'm learning so much about Capcom with your videos. These are all games I know exist but most of them never bothered myself to play or know what they're all about, so this is so interesting to me. Your awesome presentation as always also helps. Keep it up, this content is the best this platform can hope to get ;)
Thanks man!! I’m learning a lot myself making them which has been really fun and interesting. Appreciate the kind words and thanks again for watching!
I would of never known that 3rd Strider boss was from another game. Its also cool that in 2023 its still referenced in other games. The character for SFV looks like he woulda been bad ass. Maybe they will revisit the idea for 6 now. And as always, great video good sir!
Thanks man! Yeah, I had no idea that Strider boss was a reference too, pretty crazy.
Such a fun game! I first came across it on some Capcom arcade game compilation on the PS2 years ago.
Definitely! Have you played the Famicom sequel?
@@RewindArcade Nope. This video is the first I've heard about it. Looks good though.
Loved the video! One Japanese language point, worth mentioning though - Maru (丸) is commonly added onto the end of ship names. It's true that "maru" does mean round, but that isn't particularly relevant in this case. Higemaru is simply the name of the ship. For a pop-culture example of this, the no-win scenario test in Star Trek revolves around a ship called the "Kobayashi Maru". It's the same naming convention here.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the info! I had no idea about maru being used at the end of ship names.
Also, another commenter pointed out a pun, with Momotaru being a portmanteau of the Japanese folktale hero Momotarou and and the word "taru" which means barrel. Thought was pretty interesting.
I actually read up on this more. Really fascinating stuff! I'm going to add this fact into the Higemaru section of the full 1984 Capcom compilation video releasing later this month and put your name in the "Special Thanks" credits if you're cool with that. Thanks again!
I love this series, man! I bought Higemaru for Famicom cuz of this video!
Thanks man!! There’s a fan translation for Higemaru Makaijima I believe which makes it way easier to navigate.
@@RewindArcade Awesome. Thanks.
While it didn't recieve well I bet this inspired a lot of games! defintley looks unique for its time!
Yeah, it definitely felt different from a lot of other games and was fresh take on the “maze” genre which had a lot of Pac-Man clones by that point.
This game definitely needs a remake! Especially port it to the Nintendo Switch! ❤❤❤
Thankfully it’s already on the Switch via Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium, but a remake would be awesome. 👍
pssssst - goof troops for the SNES ;)
I love that you did an episode on this series - as a kid I enjoyed the MSX2 even though I could not read anything in the game (my MSX2 was European and didn't show Japanese)
Oh wow, Goof Troop almost seems like a spiritual successor Higemaru 3! I'm definitely going to add this into the video for the full 1984 compilation one later this month. Thanks for bringing this up and glad you enjoyed the video!
@@RewindArcade no problem :) I think it really was meant to be the next chapter - but the Disney skin helped selling the game I guess.
I actually rewrote the script to include Goof Troop and will include it on the full “1984 Capcom Games compilation” video later this month. I gave you a special thanks credit too. 🙂
Thanks again!
@@RewindArcade
I love the RE4 shooting range even more now...
Same, haha!
GoofTroop on SNES has a similar mechanic with barrels and plays similarly to famicom Higemaru RPG, kinda sorta spiritual sequel)
Yeah, someone brought that up earlier. Can't believe I missed that! It definitely feels close to a Higemaru 3.
Wow....we were robbed of a great character in SFV .... Hopefully he will be in SF6!!
Welp, time to go hunt down Higemaru Makaijima.
Thankfully it’s pretty cheap and there’s also a fan translation I believe. 👍
I understand its place in Capcom's history, but I really don't need it or Son Son featured in (filling out) any more Capcom compilations. I'd sooner swap them out for Dimahoo. It's unrealistic to expect them to inc a licensed game, but The Punisher's dead now.
To be fair, this video series was created to walk through every single Capcom game in chronological order so I kind of need to include these earlier titles. Trust me though, I've learned very quickly that videos based on Vulgus, SonSon, and Higemaru aren't going to bring in many views.
I absolutely love Dimahoo! Why on earth is it not on the Arcade Stadium releases!? Also, where tf is Area 88!?
@danieledwards1490 Area 88 is a a game based on a manga/anime in Japan. I sadly doubt we’ll ever see it, along with other licensed games like Nemo and AvP, on future Arcade Stadiums.
Maybe one day you'll do Xevious history & lore.
It’s definitely one I’ve considered doing. 👍
@@RewindArcade I've always loved Xevious. Very unique game. Also much of the content is exclusive to Japan, and not much is known
@@JimmyCall It's honestly a series I don't have very much experience with, but it comes up all the time in 80s video game history so I am certainly intrigued by it. Tower of Druaga is another similar series as well that I'd love to cover in the future.
Ruby Heart Crew!
Oh man, that's a cameo I completely missed! 😭
I never played this game. does this have multiplayer offline?
The only multiplayer it has is taking turns back and forth. Sadly there is no cooperative multiplayer.
@@RewindArcade darn. Looks like it could of easily very a 2 player co-op game. Thanks for the quick response
@@taltagteamchamps Yeah, it really would have worked well. A 4-player versus mode similar to Bomberman would have been very cool too!
