Leprechaun. Flying in 12-14 mph winds slightly across the slope.

  • My old Leprechaun was getting a bit tatty and in need of some minor repairs, so I decided to give it a complete re-cover.
Flight conditions weren't ideal, however I was keen to re-maiden it. The wind was quite strong (for this lightly loaded glider) blowing slightly across the slope, producing a bit of turbulence. You can often see it flying with a pronounced nose down-down attitude in an effort to penetrate and keep flying forwards.

@@camsmeltzer9388 these models aren’t really built for ballast. If the wind picks up I normally just fly something else. Anything above about 10 mph and you really need a glider with ailerons.

My dad and I built many all balsa gliders with wing shapes like you have here. Sort of mustang, spitfire, P-38 Lightning semi elliptical shapes. Back in the early 60's in Newport Beach California we flew them off of the bluffs of Costa Mesa. We didn't have RC, so we'd have to do a lot of running and hiking to retrieve the gliders as they would stray. I was about 4 years old and dad was a surfboard and sailboat builder and designer for a company there. So gliders were a side kick hobble that we did to test aerodynamic theories and designs. You are an amazing builder. Thanks for the beautiful, peaceful, and enlightening videos.

Someone could clean up selling kits these days, even if it's only the sheet stock. No dye cuts and no lasers. Simply print the pieces as an image per the plans, and cutting is done by the buyer does the scratch cutting following the printed lines. Fortunately, the thinner balsa sheet stock can be cut nicely even with ordinary scissors. Those fortunate enough to have a bench jig saw or bandsaw could still do so of course.
