Leprechaun. Flying in 12-14 mph winds slightly across the slope.

- My old Leprechaun was getting a bit tatty and in need of some minor repairs, so I decided to give it a complete re-cover.
Flight conditions weren't ideal, however I was keen to re-maiden it. The wind was quite strong (for this lightly loaded glider) blowing slightly across the slope, producing a bit of turbulence. You can often see it flying with a pronounced nose down-down attitude in an effort to penetrate and keep flying forwards.

Ficou lindo!!! Parabéns!!!
Such a pure form of flying Jim White palm City Florida
Do you ever add ballast for the conditions? Once again thank you for the great videos and flying!
@@camsmeltzer9388 these models aren’t really built for ballast. If the wind picks up I normally just fly something else. Anything above about 10 mph and you really need a glider with ailerons.
I know it probably comes with much flight experience, but your planes look like living creatures. They nuzzle up to you, shy away, and go scampering off in the wind. Just amazing. And so much fun to watch.
Thank you.
My dad and I built many all balsa gliders with wing shapes like you have here. Sort of mustang, spitfire, P-38 Lightning semi elliptical shapes. Back in the early 60's in Newport Beach California we flew them off of the bluffs of Costa Mesa. We didn't have RC, so we'd have to do a lot of running and hiking to retrieve the gliders as they would stray. I was about 4 years old and dad was a surfboard and sailboat builder and designer for a company there. So gliders were a side kick hobble that we did to test aerodynamic theories and designs. You are an amazing builder. Thanks for the beautiful, peaceful, and enlightening videos.
The ease and comfort you seem to have with launching your creation off the cliff and over the sea never ceases to amaze me.
OK, you are very experienced but that was brave. A valuable slope-soaring tutorial. Incredibly nose-down at times. (The camera-person nailed it again.)
John. Another stunning monster size!
Keep em coming, brother!
Jesus ! John if thought u'd done it all !! He touches the glider ! ( beautiful by the way ! ) love the wide wings ! And it comes alive! It even hovers above him like hes talking to it ! Hell ! Man u have a God like touch! And i'm sure there r many around the world who watch u will agree !! 👍 i'm just gobsmacked at yr mastery of these lovely birds u fly !! This has to be my favourite clip yet ! I could have watched hrs of it hovering and turning on a dime, the music complements the flying to ! Thnk u Sir John for yr utmost skills !! 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much. I really enjoy making these videos so I’m glad you enjoy watching them.
@@SlopeRCGliders u fly some lovely ladies, showing their beautiful wide wings, nodding to the wind, saying " I'm here to fly Mother Nature ! Let me fly ! And away she goes shimmying to yr control , flashing her lovely shape at us , saying " watch me ! Watch me !!❤❤
That's model flying and real building well done mate. done that sort of flying my self over the years off the montains in wales..love it
seems john lives at the perfect place for slopegliders... just wonderful!
The air is thicker as well as the cream...
The hills above Perranporth are perfect indeed! A very nice place to walk along too.
love the wing tip launch , so graceful .
Beautiful to watch.
Fabulous as usual, always a pleasure to watch.
That's a lovely bird.
Even though wind was strong, flight of this élégant glider was well mastered .Congrats and cheer!
Sorry you had such a hard time launching it ! Another great video, camera person is spot on as usual. Thanks to you two.
The Leprechaun will always be my favorite. No matter what colour!
That take off was EPIC ;o)
Love this model... but the original color scheme seemed to fit better...
Still love it and as always great pilot skilz and craftsmanship is top shelf
It's times like these that make life worth living.
John gets an automatic thumbs up from me even before seeing the videos. I seldom vote at all on YT.
Someone could clean up selling kits these days, even if it's only the sheet stock. No dye cuts and no lasers. Simply print the pieces as an image per the plans, and cutting is done by the buyer does the scratch cutting following the printed lines. Fortunately, the thinner balsa sheet stock can be cut nicely even with ordinary scissors. Those fortunate enough to have a bench jig saw or bandsaw could still do so of course.
That is the kind of flying day that everyone dreams of having.
Stately is the word that comes to mind for me here - but the glider is none the worse for it. Many thanks!
Another 1mph and it would be going backward, great shots as usual 👍
What a classic beauty! Love the red and gold. 🛩👍😁
Very fun! I hope you will film her again in better conditions! You did well in the conditions present, but I she's really a floater for soft breezes. Thanks John!
You are the Master. Thanks John!
Fabulous as usual, I saw that you put your Ocean Breeze plans on Outerzone really nice of you, any chance you could put the modified one of the Leprechaun on there too :)
All on rudder and elevator 👏
Fantastic
Beautiful as always sir!
Nice flight Thanks John
Sweet !
Still impossible to see that string that holds the glider in the sky 🤔🤔🤔🤔???
This model of yours reminds me of how dragonflies behave...with that nose down super sensitive responsiveness.
Love the launch!
Wieder etwas Entspannung abgeholt😉Danke
Love it! Greetings from germany.
I’d say 32oz of lead would get her out there. Another great video.
That’s almost the weight of the glider. It would be better to just fly a faster plane.
Tremendous! Full deflection rudder now and again, I'm sure.
Looks good 👍
Ok John, it's time for a Waco CG-4.
I do have a set of plans and parts waiting to be built....
Hi John, more awesome flying in tricky conditions..How many spare channels have you got on spectrum 8 ? 250 available - about 10 left ! I could see you working really hard on tx to get "catch" landing. Great flying & photography as usual. I've got my leprechaun plan off eBay ( pylon + high tail ) but will modify as your version. Been flying algebra ( Mick reeves / Sean bannister ) tonight up Duddon valley in 5 mph westerly. 45 minute flight & landed at my feet ! You've absolutely inspired me to go gliding again ! Thx as always, jd.
Fabulous stuff. The Algebra really is quite a classic model.
I look forward to hearing how the Leprechaun build comes along..
2:12 - Looks like she's off hunting truffles :-)
Muito bom meu amigo. Gostaria de um dia ser como você e poder fazer estes planadores e os voos maravilhosos.
Parabéns!!!
Congratulation!!!!
Leprechaun is the best ! Where is the yellow one ?.
Hello from the Alps !.
This was the yellow one. It’s changed colour.
Well done! Great flying, excellent videographer and nice sounds.
Verry « joli » glider, And a good pilot make great vidéo. But now i have to build one. .. bons vols.
While I appreciate that the glider has to be as light as possible, it would be interesting to have a small camera in the cockpit to see the pilot’s point of view.
I have got some really interesting footage from a camera mounted on this glider. If you click on the playlist tab there is one called Onboard Footage which has all the relevant videos.
@@SlopeRCGliders thank you, I found the Onboard Footage, absolutely brilliant!!
Muito bom meu amigo, vc é um mestre na arte de voar.
That launch. :-}
I am sure you have helium in those planes of yours and this one is no exception . Thumbs up.
DAMN - that is such an Old-School airframe. Isn't it beautiful ... and it flies so well on elevator and rudder. What's the all-up weight?
Thank you. All up weight is about 1.3kg
👏👏👏...👌
Seems smaller in the solid colour. It definitely prefers the lighter winds doesn't it?
Yes, I think 5-7 mph is about ideal.
The air on the hill looks very laminar, little turbulence. Unless your flying skills hide the bumps. What does the landing area look like? There was a glimpse of a path and maybe a field in back. How much area do you have to land in?
The air is always a lot smoother on a good day. The landing area is not very big, just a small strip of grass beside the path. . There is a field behind but it drops away in the wrong direction and is very rocky in places,
@@SlopeRCGliders thanks for the reply. Now I see why you land on the slope toward the water. You have a very nice place to fly.
Hi John, did you ever have so little wind in your region that you could no longer fly?
I can't imagine this on the cliff at all.
You do get the occasional day when there is barely enough wind to fly, but most of the time the wind seems too strong.
where have you put the C.G ???? Exellent Flight , Fabulus model............
Because of the large lifting tail the CG is actually quite a long way back on the wing.
Amazing flight John! How much does a kit like this cost? Thanks for the video, cant wait to see more!
I built it from scratch, so it was just really the cost of the wood and covering. The electrics get swapped from one model to the next. I guess it probably cost about £30 in wood and covering. It’s hard to work out exactly.
@@SlopeRCGliders thanks! thats fine, i figured you scratch build. Is it just a standard 2x 9Gram servo (1 elevator 1 rudder) or do you use standard size?
@@m.s.aviation7065 it has two standard sized servos right up in the nose.
hello guys, I'm from Brazil I really admire all the videos posted. I would really like to know if it is possible to obtain the plan of that glider. I have a lot of interest in building it.
I downloaded the plans for free from the Outerzone website. However I did make a few of my own changes to the original design.
You make some great gliders. Where is the flying site your always flying?
I’m in Perranporth Cornwall. I’m lucky that the slope is just a short walk from my house.
I remember the Canberras out of St Mawgan when I was a lad on holiday.
Hello John. May I ask you a question. What is the wind speed? Approximately
It was about 12 - 14 mph.
👌
Qual envergadura?
2.6 meter
Vou encomendar um elétrico com um amigo que controi , provavelmente com esse mesmo tamanho.
Gratidão por esses vídeos...
Eles trazem minutos de paz para mente e coração.
Hi. There is a plan for this glider ? Regards
I used free plans downloaded from the Outerzone website. However, I did make a few of my own changes from the original design.
@@SlopeRCGliders Thanks. I found this: outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=8397 but its not complete. I don't find the tickness of the fuselage.
@@JLmcct I think the width of each cross former is written somewhere on the plan.
My landings are better suited to a Benny Hill soundtrack...
