    In this video I share with you my opinions on how a humble Audi diesel makes a far better car to live with than even one of the best electric vehicles you can buy, the Porsche Taycan.
    Please note I am not an EV hater, I actually think for a lot of people they make the perfect car. What I do hate is depreciation and electric cars are setting new records for this and can't see that changing without any government intervention to incentivise their sale on the used market. Also I dislike misrepresentation and promoting cars as having a certain amount of range which in most situations is very optimistic is not going to engratiate EVs to the general public, how it's legal I don't know.

    Andrew, most EV drivers charge at home at night on a cheap tariff like Octopus Intelligent Go for 7.5p per kWh, so your £4.90 cost would be £1.31!
    Don't hate EVs, just don't have a ridiculously expensive one like a Taycan, use the EV daily and keep your Porsche for the weekend.

    • @AndrewTSq
      @AndrewTSq Před 3 měsíci

      At the Porsche dealer here, the value of a 2nd hand Taycan makes even a big F150 cheaper to drive than the Taycan :O A new one is $180. A 3 year old Taycan with hardly any miles on it, $80k.. So a loss of value of $100k in 3 year. Its a really bad buy if you have to pay for it yourself. So cost of electricity is not the main concern.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ok thanks Rich. I know a lot of people charge at home but if charging away from home was irrelevant then building infrastructure to ease range anxiety wouldn’t be so important. Yes that does make the mileage very cheap if you just look at the miles but factor in depreciation and it’s a much different bigger picture. PCP will insulate drivers from depreciation but that’s only if you keep the car for long enough to be able to return it without penalty, if you try and sell early, the negative equity can be eye watering. I don’t hate EVs but I hate depreciation and misrepresentation of key stats like real world range

Not sure the battery is an issue as I read a lot EVs have done over 300k without any major issues. I am sure when the petrol car came out originally there wasnt petrol stations everywhere!!! In the meantime I'll stick with my Golf R for now. Not a fan of the Audi it just looks like a run of the mill estate car to me and its diesel so no good for going into the city due to the congestion charge.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 měsíci

      THERE IS NO CHARGE LEVIED AGAINST EURO 6 COMPLIANT DIESELS LIKE THE AUDI IN ANY CLEAN AIR ZONE IN THE UK AND PROBABLY ANYWHERE ELSE TOO. Lots of lazy journalism has made people think there is but there isn't. As for buying a Taycan used when they are cheaper, how wise that is all depends on the battery life. No doubt some EVs have done 300k miles but like with ICE, cars used regularly and that do higher mileages can be more reliable that cars that are only used for short distances and never warm up even if they have done low mileage. Likewise an EV that is charged in a way which isn't good for battery longevity will have a battery that deteriorates sooner.

      @@volkswizard calm down with the capital letters dude not everyone has to agree exactly with your point of view. I got rid of my last car that was a diesel it was great but they do have a stigma especially relating to air quality. My friend has Skoda vrs diesel and has to pay the congestion every time he goes to work- not good! The Audi you shown in your video might be the exception but I’m sure those rules will change again given the council’s need for money and environmental stance! From a looks perspective the taycan looks a million times better will need a lot less servicing and will probably go up in value in latter years due to it being the first electric Porsche. I know there are a lot of ev haters outthere but they are going to change automotive landscape just like the iPhone changed the phone industry. The hot topic now the is depreciation in electric cars, but it’s clear that next big issue will be the batteries in used vehicles, which will give around 50% of their expected range when new. Add into this the lack of infrastructure, future increases in vehicle tax and consistent bad press on reliability I think it’s hard to see the future continuing like this. Personally I expect at least one big name manufacturer *cough* VW *cough* to go bust as the business case just doesn’t add up.

    The EV thing is for most, is a daunting prospect and it's not necessarily based upon range anxiety, it's more about 'deprecation-anxiety'. People just don't want to take a 30k bath in the first year of ownership, and the other thing is the end of that warranty cover that also kicks the residual value of EVs, especially the high end luxury EVs. They're by design a short lived thing, especially if you cover a lot of miles per year, because owners that do, will get to that 100k warranted mileage limit all the sooner. The question I often ask anyone considering an EV. Would anyone purchase a used one, with 101,000 miles on or over 8 years old. I can't see many people using common sense would consider that a financially sound decision. And so this problem will be on those owners that can't sell a used EV of a certain vintage or mileage. They really need to find a solution to the EVs lifespan issues. Because being a Golf Gti fan, and I'd still rather own a tidy Mk2 that's covered over 100k miles than any EV. Because they simply won't last for 20 or 30 years. Great video

The pre 24 model was a lot worse at a quoted 281 miles although I'm confident you wouldn't get anywhere near to the 381 miles quoted in the new 24 version, which was confirmed by your review! Consumers are clearly voting with their feet judging by depreciation on the used market. The Audi S4 is a minter and on my (reasonably priced)dream car short list alongside a BMW M340I/ D Touring. Thanks so much Peter. I was warned by someone at Porsche that the car I had may not be the one on the current configurator so I did a vehicle data check and the battery spec was exactly the same as the one that was listed as 381. Having said I can't help feel the technical info deliberately tries to deceive, in some area quoting a 100+ kw battery but not stating always that the actually usable size is in the nineties. The WLTP range figures are also deceptive and don't make it as clear as they need to what the effect of options has on the range. WLTP range quoted needs to have a summer and a winter measurement so different can they be. This is so obvious you've got to wonder if the EU who is behind the emissions test want them to look better than real world use reflects to encourage take up. Another mis-selling scandal maybe?

      Thanks Tony and I'm glad you appreciate the sentiment expressed in this video which is in the most based on fact rather than simply opinion. The key fact is that a lot of manufacturers have gone all in for EVs and they can't afford to not succeed because their existence depends on it. As a result they are spending a lot on advertising EVs (such as Cupra's recent occupation of key pages in Evo with Born adverts) and ad revenue is the life blood of publications. The rest you can work out (if you haven't already) but I personally can't help thinking Sinclair C5 all over again...

      @@volkswizard Thanks Andrew. Until commercial vehicles start to be economical as electric only (up and down the Motorway network, not just local Florists) then ice replacement options won't make a difference to Co2 sadly.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Porsche GB will have an allocation from Porsche AG which will won't necessarily reflect demand and the dealers will have to find a home for those cars at any price, I'd expect the discounts to be higher than £20k on some of the dearer derivatives.
      From the Porsche GB website;
      "Porsche Cars GB is the manufacturer’s fourth-largest market globally and also one of the biggest for Taycan sales, reflecting the overall consumer trend towards electrification"

      Good point re facelift, that's never going to be good for values of the old one which are already on the floor. I think we might see Porsche having to mothball some cars which they simply can't shift.

    Many electric vehicles from Volkswagen are still not available down under. The Golf GTE was coming now it's not. The ID range, who knows. The ID Buzz is predicted at $100k. A Golf R, huge wait, is $83k. Our crazy climate minister in Canberra is already looking at trying to kill Petrol and Diesel car sales asap with taxes and emissions standards higher than Europe. Our infrastructure is not ready. And we have a power grid on verge of collapse. All renewables asap, no coal, gas or nuclear allowed. Too bad if you don't have money for a new vehicle. Pollies don't care.

Unfortunately the current Labor government is stuck fast on electric cars and wind and sun. It is costly also and ruins farm land and native bush. The nutter in charge of climate, loves electric cars. He cannot see beyond them. Most can't afford any new car. Sad really.

    The Audi looks a bit like someone added ebay silver trims and it isn't as nice to look at. Porsche interior looks a lot nicer and could be improved by adding actual AC switches like in the Audi Etron GT. A Porsche will always cost more than an Audi. I had a S3 that could beat most 911's in a drag race but the Porsche will always look nicer. Compare an Audi R8 to a Gallardo and the Audi just doesn't look as nice even though they share a lot of the same parts. Taycan tyres are £450 a corner on the 21" wheels and if you get a stone chip on the glass roof that would be very annoying. 19" alloy wheels will give more range but don't look as nice so I would fit 20". All VW group electric cars have massive wheel arches, Why ?. Drive less than 70 and again better range. The Taycan with a big fuel tank is called the Panamera as they share a lot of parts. Also you have to add servicing costs as the Audi will cost £300 a year ish and the Taycan £150 (£300 every 2 years). YES THERE IS A WAY OF CHECKING THE BATTERY HEALTH ! Diesel car poison the air we breath.

    I think these are lovely looking cars, but charging vs. the convenience of filling up with petrol is off putting. Then the price, then the range etc. If only Shell/BP had tried to develop eco fuels we wouldn’t have this slightly embarrassing situation around EVs. Overpriced, over rated and generally disappointing. I’d have an EV if it would match the range of an ICE car and didn’t take so bloody long to charge, it feels like they’ve still got a long way to go (pardon the pun)

      Reliability another issue Kevin, overheard a conversation at a Porsche service desk about a Taycan that wouldn’t charge and owner very annoyed. Porsche have a load of EVs incoming soon so I wouldn’t want to be working for them (which is something up until now I’ve always aspired to)

    Ones a porsche ones an audi, the audi is always going to give better value.
    You mention the audi can do 500 odd miles yet you didnt do anything like that.
    Evs need a different train of thought over nite charging of a couple of £s and commuting daily 100/200 miles. These are the journey/use for most people.
    There are lots for evs with 200k plus miles.
    All sounds good to me with an gt3 for weekends.

    I can't forgive Audi for making a diesel S4.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 měsíci

      It’s the best car Audi have made in a long time. The petrol S4 was just another car that combined practicality with a sports car thirst. Yes it was fast but no faster in real world and even when driven sedately (which it is most of the time) it still had a prodigious thirst. I know some people can get 40+ out of them but the long term average usually begins with a 2. S4 TDI has best of all 3 works, classy practical A4 Avant, economy similar to a 2.0 TDI and grunt of petrol S4(probably more with 700nm torque). Overtaking pace is just mind blowing 😲

    • @gsbut
      @gsbut Před 3 měsíci

      Cant fault what you say, just for me it should have been a A4 50 TDI not an S4. Not convinced people bought S4s for continued long distance driving. Unles you do plan big miles often, buying a diesel on 2024 is an interesting choice. More obscure (and my problem) is the gap left in the A4 petrol range. The A4 45 TFSI I am sure very nice, but ~250PS too tame to consider as an S4 alternative and the ~450PS RS 4 other end of the spectrum. A conundrum that worries me less than owning a Taycan, there are stories of Porsche not even wanting to buy them at present.
