  • Today, January 9th, is the birthdate of the late Bob Denver, Gilligan on Gilligan's Island. As we look back at the 1966-67 television season on this 50th anniversary year, we'll be paying tribute to the final season (of three) of the original broadcast television run on CBS of the series.
    We started our tribute in November with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gilligan's Island series creator, Sherwood Schwartz. In December, we paid tribute to Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III) and Mr. Magoo. Today, we'll view an interview with Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr. (The Skipper).
    This interview was done on the NBC Late Show way back on May 17, 1988. It was the last time the entire show cast and it's creator were interviewed together (although they would reunite again later in the 1988 on a Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous episode... more on that later this spring).
    For the next couple of months as we push through winter into spring, we'll have additional video segments from this entire Late Show cast interview as we pay a special tribute to Gilligan's Island, its cast and creator.
    Enjoy!
    This video clip is presented here on CZcams for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
    "....the ship aground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle, with Gilligan... the Skipper too..."

    • @davefox7516
      @davefox7516 Před 3 lety +2

      @@TowGunner Also, another reason why this worked for Alan Hale Jr.... He grew up in the shadow of his father, and no matter how many movies and TV appearances he made, he was always known as Alan Hales' son.
      With the skipper, everyone knew who Alan Hale Jr was. He made a name for himself and he became famous on his own.
      Also, not only did he wear the hat because people identified him as that character, he had gotten bald on top. So the hat was a dual purpose item. He genuinely liked the attention of his celebrity due to the skipper.

      That's why the "hollywood hacks" nowadays can't remake "Gilligan's Island"! Alan Hale Jr. and Bob Denver, and "THE REST"(!? UNFAIR TREATMENT OF A GREAT CAST!!) WERE THE BEST!!! It's a shame Tina Louise never did the follow-up movies...IT WAS A BAD CHOICE, ON HER PART, NOT TO CONTINUE PARTICIPATION IN A TRUE CLASSIC!

    I once read that when Alan Hale Jr. was in the hospital, dying from cancer, he would still dress up as “The Skipper”, and visit with sick kids stuck in the hospital. If any of them commented on his weight loss, he told them that MaryAnn was concerned about his weight, and had cut him off from coconut cream pies. He revelled in being beloved as “The Skipper”, whereas Tina Louise loathes the fact she’s still thought of as “Ginger Grant”.

    Bob Denver almost wasn't Gilligan. Sherwood Schwartz Wanted and offered the part to Jerry Van Dyke. Jerry read the pilot and said it was “the worst thing I’d ever read.” He opted to take the lead in "My Mother the Car". That sounds like a mistake but Jerry said "“But that’s the joke: I turned it down and took My Mother the Car. But, again, it was really good, because I’d [have] been forever known as Gilligan. So that worked out, too!”

    Did I miss something? 1988 to 1966 is 22 years not 50, To be the 50th is 2016 and Alan and Bob have been dead for years! Ginger and Mary Ann are the only living members of that show.

      Good catch... correct... this episode of NBC Late Show was shown on May 17, 1988 (date included in video clip title)… as you noted, about 22 years after the end of the series in 1967. What we want to try to do here at our Television Vanguard channel is to highlight the 50th anniversary of a series debuting or ending on first-run broadcast primetime television, and we write a 'blog-like' summary of the show to highlight the passing of this 50th anniversary. To do this, we look for supporting videos from across the decades, which are older videos from years gone by. Many of our viewers do ask about 'why the 50th anniversary title when indeed the video clip shown Is not actually a 50th anniversary reunion.' Our answer is often the same - we simply what to bring to the viewers attention that a 50th year milestone is upon us, and we want to stop and take a moment to reflect and pay tribute to the event, show and performers in the best way we can. We hope you are enjoying the channel! Stay tuned, much more to come. Best, Television Vanguard staff

    Compared to Bob Alan Hale has hardly changed & he WAS the Skipper, no doubt about it. Sad now that Tina Louise is the final cast member living, how ironic.

      The host is Ross Shafer. The Late Show was on Fox, originally hosted by Joan Rivers in 1986. It went through a series of replacement hosts, ending with Shafer in 1988.

    I love the original show very much, but when the "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" and the followup movies came along, the show to me had lost its charm! The cast tried to recreate the magic but it just wasnt there!
