1973-74 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Here's Lucy (Ball, Arnaz, Burnett Dick Cavet interview)
As we wrap up Mother's Day 2024, we continue on with our retrospective of the 1973-1974 television season, and we begin our final look back at the television series Here's Lucy, that was coming to an end in the spring of 1974. Today, we pay a heartfelt tribute to the actress comedian who played Lucy Carter for so many years on that series - the legendary Lucille Ball.
In this video segment, Lucille is joined by Carol Burnett and Lucille's daughter Lucie Arnaz as them reminicse with host Dick Cavett.
This video clip is presented here on CZcams for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
We hope all the moms out there had a wonderful Mother's Day tribute of their own today with family and friends.
And now... here's Lucy.
Enjoy.

    You could tell that kidney cancer was taking its toll on Raymond Burr. If he never got kidney cancer, he could have done Perry Mason TV specials until the year 2000. Too bad William Talman, Ray Collins, and William Hopper died before the return of Perry Mason in the 1980s. Barbara Hale died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2017 at age 94.

    What Pat Weaver is discussing here is the direct result of the following: Republican president Reagan laid the groundwork for lie-spew networks like Fake News Fox "News," and crap, empty, sensationalist shows like, "Geraldo," "Jerry Springer," etc., by getting rid of the Fairness Doctrine: Fairness Doctrine: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr: “The devolution of the American press began in 1986 when Ronald Reagan abolished the Fairness Doctrine. We had a law in this country that we passed in 1928 that said that the air waves belong to the public. The broadcasters can be licensed to use them, but only if they use them to promote the public interest, to inform the public and advance democracy. They no longer have an obligation to serve the public interest. Their only obligation is to their shareholders. They serve that obligation not by informing us, telling us the things we need to understand to make rational decisions in a democracy, but rather by entertaining us. England has the same kind of rules and in Europe, but in our country, we lost those rules."

      Thank you Kerry for the information on Liz. She was (and still is) one of our all-time favorites. There have been a lot of actresses on television over the decades, and many have similar qualities, similar presence in front of the camera. And that's all good. But Ms. Montgomery had something unique about her - very down to earth, perhaps an 'ordinary every-woman' persona on screen that made her extraordinary. Those little touches (like that painting scene you describe, or her gardening in that super cool backyard that was created for Samantha to putter around in)... those little things that she and her husband Bill put together for the episodes from time to time - it has made the series over time very special and unique in its own way.... just like the star of the show - an 'every woman' persona and she made extra special and unique and unlike anyone on television before or since. -staff

    If all this had happened today, Dana would have had more support, other means besides Hollywood to revive her career, she would have had psychological help and she would have recovered. Everything that happened to her is very unfair. A talented, beautiful, charming girl, with a beautiful smile. She had a very painful life and didn't deserve the treatment she received, she got pregnant and Hollywood closed its doors to her, they only remembered her to use her story to generate an audience.

  • @edits3372
    @edits3372 Před 14 dny

    She didn't deserve everything she went through, she was always a suffering girl, she needed help and no one helped her as she deserved. Dana had psychological problems that no one tried to help her in her childhood and adolescence, she reached adulthood, got pregnant and Hollywood turned its back on her when she needed it most, the routine that different strokes filled a void she felt, when she lost her work this void was filled by alcohol, after which her husband abandoned her, lost her mother, once again she found herself being abandoned, Dana faced very difficult things in life. She needed love, care, someone to help her seek psychological help that she didn't have as a teenager. Hollywood was cruel to her, she had talent, unique beauty, a charming smile, she just needed a chance, a test, but she didn't get it and her life became a fight against addiction, in search of regaining her strength. career and with psychological problems that no one tried to help her, they only talked about the addiction but not where this addiction came from. She still had to deal with people making jokes, and to top off all the bad things they did to her, she had that damned interview with Howard Stern where that despicable being along with other monsters on the phone humiliated her in every possible way.

    Not to be a pisser, but this is so indicative of how absolutely puritannical American television was at this time. Think 9pm on a Saturday night might be late enough to show a single woman or divorcee? God forbid we don't want to expose kids to that.

    • @TelevisionVanguard
      @TelevisionVanguard Před 14 dny

      Glad you asked this question - we think we have a pretty good answer... the pilot is available on the DVD package of 'That Girl' from 2005/06. The DVD set was produced by "Shout Factory", and should still be available somewhere online: Amazon, B&N, eBay, etc. Look for the first season DVD set... there are five in the entire set for the five season series, but each can be sold/purchased separately. The original pilot (w/Harold Gould) is a part of the 'extra content - bonus features' in that DVD season 1 set. Here is the description on the DVD packaging/booklet insert for that season 1 DVD package - That Girl Pilot: "Although the story is the same as Episode #11 ("What's in a Name?"), different actors are playing Ann's parents, and Donald is known as Donald Blue Sky, Anne's agent/boyfriend.Several of the shots were lifted intact and used in the later episode. The DVD series set (particularly this first season DVD) is simply outstanding .... one of our favorites, and we have many in our library... but the That Girl DVD set a favorite here. Marlo Thomas is interviewed extensively, and she is fantastic - such a great story teller. Enjoy! - staff
