  • The invasion of Ukraine by Russia is now over a month old. Konstantin Kisin is a comedian and the host of the Triggernometry show, he is also a Russian immigrant with family in both Ukraine and Russia.
    In this conversation with Rebel Wisdom's David Fuller he talks about his emotional journey over the course of the war, and how he has struggled with the way the conflict is portrayed in some areas close to home.
    It gets a bit spicy towards the end, this is the Bulwark article David mentioned regarding Trump: www.thebulwark.com/thank-god-...

    As a religious person, I think you are both viewing 'religion' in a very caricatured, simplistic manner. If you've ever hung around genuinely religious people we question everything, endlessly argue over interpretations and study, study, study. Religion isn't a simpler way to view the world. My life would be much simpler without my faith... If I genuinely took no interest in my faith and did whatever I wanted, that would be much easier. However, seeking truth, means following it wherever it leads, even when it's not easy.

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP Před 6 měsíci

      I'm a spiritual person raised in more liberal-minded religion with plenty of people who questioned. But having spent a lot of time also among religious people in general, I haven't found that seeking and study is very common. And even when it's found among religious people, it is most often extremely narrow in simply confirming biases (e.g., apologetics).

      I think comedians are in a similar sphere as journalists only they're intelligent and curious whereas journalists aren't. Remember the famous Wolf Blitzer fail moment on Jeopardy where he bombed? Most people don't remember that it was comedian Andy Richter that crushed that episode. It takes a lot higher intelligence and understanding of humans and their nature to walk that court jester razor than it is to tell the king what he wants to hear.

    On the subject of crimea that is Russia's only warm water port and it was utterly predictable that Russia would not let it go. Also the population of Crimea is mostly Russian so no, I don't think they had to herd the Crimean people to the ballot under the threat of the Russian military. On the subject of the Donbas region, , the Minsk accords did not say that the Donbas region would join a greater Russia. The Donbas was to remain with Ukraine but with strong autonomy and a regional government as we do in the UK with Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

He said he thinks that, while he agrees that Trump could have been harder, he also thinks that there is a possibility that Trump would have made excuses for Putin. Kisin's opinion was pretty demented on that issue, and utterly disconnected from reality. I've rarely met anti-war leftists in the U.S. who hate liberal democracy. Typically, American leftists in general are the strongest defenders of liberal democracy. That makes me suspect this guy is largely ignorant, disinformed, and propagandized. He has obviously been indoctrinated by right-wing talking points and narratives. It's unfortunate, as he seems like someone capable of intelligent and reasonable thought.
      If he were to spend more time talking to average leftists, he'd discover the caricature he has internalized has little relation to actual people. Most of us on the Left have diverse and nuanced views on the problems in the West and in Eastern Europe. It's the same problem with how American leftists are trying to argue for a complex understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. But the right-wing corporate media spins the false narrative of anti-Semitism as they beat the war drums for the American Empire.

    Thank you for this conversation, i really enjoyed it. Just wanted to add to the conversation as I lived as an American in Kiev for the last 7 years and the topic that you discussed about are Russian speakers forced to speak Ukrainian and is there a sort of Prejudice from Ukrainians to those who are Russian. I experienced this as such a varying issue and I spent the greater part of my 7 years there trying to sort it out. It totally depended it seemed on which pocket of people you found yourself in. For example when I first arrived I spent a good time asking locals etc which language should I learn to be able to really do well in Kiev…again the responses were equally pro Russian and Pro Ukrainian. There are strong options and feelings on both sides. One thing to know is that to try to govern this multi language and multi cultural country by ethnicity will I believe always lead to conflict.

Instead of approaching the subject with your emotions, you should use your critical thinking. Instead of ''i feel like'' you should start with ''i think'', ''i'm thinking''. You will not fix anything by saying "nobody started this, everybody is equally responsible", you have to analyze objectively and then you HAVE to pick a side, even if it's just for a moment, because otherwise you can't act. We call this paralyzes through analysis. I've always considered myself more on the left but that's why I can say clearly and with confidence, that the left is responsible for this situation, because they control the mainstream since years now and they are driving everybody more and more towards the extremes, this needs to be called out and stoped. 25:00 My own largest problem exploring the alternative space is also that it "leans conspiratorial".
    I recently spent six hours listening to various podcasts hosting James Lindsay on social justice culture and I really liked his objective content, while also having lot of problems with the magnitude of his anti-institutional venom, which did seem to tilt conspiratorial.
    He was an especially interesting case, because the degree he exposes this was entirely dependent upon the show. Very little of this was evident in his sober appearance on EconTalk. A whole lot of this was evident in his appearance with Mikhaila Peterson (who wasn't pushing back much harder than Dave Rubin used to do with his more controversial guests before I tuned him out). It was also a persistent subtext in James' appearance on Timcast, laced throughout with frat-boy riffs I completely failed to parse. If I hadn't actually followed his across my normal podcast boundaries I wouldn't have realized the extent of his personal politics.
    In the Beyond Belief 2007 Conference, "Enlightenment 2.0", David Brin goes off on a five-minute rant posing a question to the panel (Daniel Dennett, David Sloan Wilson, Jonathan Haidt, Michael Shermer) concerning propaganda.
    _If I were to ask you, what propaganda do you see, you'd all point to religion. When in fact if you look at modern film, modern movies, modern television, the most common message in almost every film is suspicion of authority, usually accompanied by its Sancho Panza sidekick of tolerance. You will find that the main difference between a right wing piece of propaganda and a left wing piece of propaganda is_ who _is the nefarious conspiratorial authority figure, trying to bully his way around and create 1984._
    Corollary: The most potent manifestation of the Dunning-Kruger effect is believing that your boss's job is simpler than your job, and that any damn fool could do you boss's job better than your boss.
    Most of the people I know who've been promoted regularly are generally terrified to inherit their boss's job, and usually the first year is a very difficult year until you grow into the next rung.
    Now, there are many people in the world who grow into a job they aren't capable of doing gracefully by becoming a gruff bully. This doesn't actually mean that the job is easy, it just means that the job can be done badly. And it's actually fairly likely the next boss up perceives the problem, but is so busy righting their own ship, that wading into the problem is not their first management priority. This is all bog-standard organizational dysfunction; it's all far from _Rise and Fall of Rome_ material, 99% of the time.
    Except in the alternative media space, where it's dangerous to your audience engagement to directly challenge this mantra.

    • @afterthesmash
      @afterthesmash Před 2 lety

      After writing that, Google fetched me a paper titled _The Dunning-Kruger Effect Is Probably Not Real_ (December 2020) which claims that the effect can be replicated using random data, not taken from human subjects, making the result a methodological artifact.
      They did find a small group, about 5-6% of their study observations, where unskilled people were unaware that they were unskilled.
      Still plenty enough for a trope, if not for a valid scientific result.

      About the conspiratorial, that has been studied quite a bit. It's been found that people prone to paranoia and conspiracy theorizing don't only perceive more Machiavellianism in others but are more likely to measure higher in Machiavellianism in themselves. It's not clear if it's merely an issue of their projecting their own tendencies on others or if obsessing over a fearful worldview elicits Machiavellianism in them. In either case, one needs to take with a grain of salt anyone who constantly fear-mongers.
      We do know from other studies that stress and sickliness (parasite load, pathogen exposure, high inequality, etc) increase population measures of many things: social conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, dark personality (psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism, etc. What much of this has in common is low measures of the dual personality trait 'openness to experience' and 'intellect', which strongly correlates to liberal-mindedness and social liberalism.
