  • Ron Fernandez shows how to play a Fado Menor
on Portuguese Guitar and Spanish Guitar. The Portuguese guitar part is an authentic Fado Menor as played in the early 20th century. The music for the Portuguese part in this video is written out in notation and tablature at: www.fernandezmusic.com where there is an introductory lesson for playing the Lisbon Fado Guitarra.
The Portuguese Guitar was made by Manuel Cardoso in Odivelas, Portugal in 1982.. The Spanish Guitar was made by Felix Manzanero In Madrid, Spain in 1999.

In Vancouver I studied with Jose Amaral. In Portugal I had a few lessons with Carlos Gonçalves (Amalia's guitarist) and Luis Penedo, President of the Academia da Guitarra Portuguesa e do Fado. Thank you for your comment.
I should mention here that the Fado Menor is a musical form which serves as the background for singing fado poetry, it does not have a specific melody. The singer improvises the melody. The musicians play a measure of the Tonic chord, 2 measures of the Dominant 7 and then the Tonic chord again. There is a characteristic arpeggio pattern which the Portuguese guitar plays. There are standard ornamentations which the musicians play but they are free to create new ones.

Hi Manuel. The Fado Menor is in minor key and the Fado Maior (which some call Fado Corrido) is in major key; the Fado Menor is usually slower. These 2 forms have similar structures: usually 4 sections: the 1st is tonic, the 2nd and 3rd are dominate 7 and the last is tonic. This is a simply structure for accompanying fado poetry. These forms do not have set melodies--the melodies are improvised. The guitarist plays contracantes between the vocal segments.

I decided to play this piece in the Original key of F minor by putting a Capo on the 3rd Fret so I could emulate the older Soprano Lisboa Tuning (FCDGCD). There's also the Guitolao which is a Tenor Portuguese Guitar tuned GDEADE, but you could tune it down a step to FCDGCD & play in the Original F Key.

Very sweet sounding Portuguese guitar. Yes, definitely quite a different sound from the Classic guitar. Both are beautiful but they would be better suited to different musical styles. The Portuguese guitar sounds more nostalgically European sweetly folky... The Classic guitar sounds more robust. I could imagine wild, very rhythmic Spanish flamenco sounding quite right on a Portuguese guitar which sounds as if it would be great for solo playing of folk music or to accompany singers. Very nice. Well crafted instrument. Would take a lot of skill to produce such a fine instrument.

While It is true that the English Guitar had some influence on the design on the Portuguese guitarra in the 19th century, it is appears that the Portuguese had their own 12 string cittern before the importation of the English instrument. Pedro Caldeira Cabral's 400 page book, A Guitarra Portuguesa, tells about the predecessors of the guitarra portuguesa. It is unfortunate that the literature in English usually repeats the mistake that the guitarra portuguesa was simply imported from England.

The tuning is not difficult if you have a electronic chromatic tuner which is like a guitar tuner but has all of the sharps and flats of the complete scale whereas a guitar tuner only has EADGBE. The traditional Portuguese guitarra tuners work very well and keep the strings in tune. Making loops at the end of the strings so they can be attached to the guitarra is a bit more difficult. I am working on a video which will show how to string up a Portuguese guitarra.

yoheff988 I explain how to tune both the Lisbon and Coimbra Portuguese Guitarras in my Free internet lesson which is on the Fernandez Music website. At that place there is a complete lesson on how to play this Fado Menor with notation and tablature.

That's actually false. English guitar (english cittern) was never the ancestor of the Portuguese guitar. They're close relatives, with the same ancestor: European Renascentist Cittern.
The only thing that the Portuguese guitar "borrowed" from the English one was the tuning system, that was later modified and improved.

It was originally an English instrument I believe? I will accept back royalties of one million pounds on behalf of the English people.
