Reynaldo Varella was an important player of the Portuguese guitarra a century ago. He published this Fado Corrido Maior in his own musical system of "algarismos". This revealed a charming instrumental fado which had been hidden for almost a century. For a written trans...

Muito lindo Hernandez you really are de best one

Pure Joy!!!
I imported thousand of guitars from Esteve in Valencia and a small number of Lauds, bandurrias and Spanish mandolins. The lauds have a very interesting tone and can be tuned in a variety of ways. Steve Howe had a special open tuning. Technically the laud is considered to be a modern cittern. There are a few old methods for this instrument in Spanish. I expect that someone has posted them on the internet.
I have just bought this instrument from a seller and am enjoying it a lot . mine is a 115. As a guitar player it gives me a whole new instrument to explore .
I do not think that Felix was an egotist or selfish. He spent his life making good guitars and trying to understand how they worked.
🤣🤣 si no quiere explicar la función y el porque de las barras armonicas para que hacer un documental eso se llama ser egoista

Hi, Ron! Do you still remember the pool hall's name?
I will find out in a few days. There is a second video I am posting shortly with other musicians doing Fado Lopes.
beautiful sound👏
Great videos. I was disappointed by your comments below that these picks are unsuitable for classical guitar, and I wonder why you say so, because Alaska Piks are certainly used by some classical players, and I was hoping your unhas were the answer to my own nail problems. Oh, and what do you think about using an elastic band instead of Micropore tape? Thanks.
Yes, an elastic chord works well. You can use this picks for nylon string guitars but I think that they are physically too hard to get the sound of the great classical players like Andres Segovia. He played with a combination of the pad of the fingertip and the fingernail.
Wonderful memories of a wonderful woman and friend. Thanks Ron!
Thank you for your comment. Ron Fernandez
Thanks for posting this!

beautiful - I'm so very lucky I got to know her. wishing you the best, Ron. thanks for sharing this
To play in the Original Key of F Major, just put your capo on the 3rd Fret. Tuning the Lisboa Portuguese Guitar up a Minor Third to Soprano Tuning would require really light gauge strings. They would have to make a short scale Soprano Lisboa w/ a Mandolin scale length of like 13 inches.
The notion of "Original Key" is problematic. Currently standard concert pitch is usually set at 440 HZ. In the 1920s C was set at 256 which made A at 431 HZ. In addition, if you read through the 19th century Portuguese guitar methods you will see that the authors are more concerned with relative pitch between strings rather than adherence to a certain absolute pitch. So, if your instrument sounds good with a capo on the 3rd fret go for it. But if it sound better without the capo or with another tuning or pitch us that. All of this "folk" music music is very transposable.
In any case I am glad to see that you have found this music enjoyable and that you have taken the time to think about it and experiment with it. I look forward to hearing/seeing your versions.
To play in the Original Key of Bb, just put your Capo on the 3rd Fret. FCDGCD Tuning would be Porto Tuning but the scale length would have to be the same as a Mandolin since a High D5 would be a step below the E5 of a Mandolin.
You could use Regular Guitar/Banjo Finger picks
No, you cannot get the same sound.
@@FernandezMusic They have to be Portuguese Guitar specific Finger Picks. I was able to use the FCDGCD tuning on my Lisboa Portuguese Guitar by popping my Capo on the 3rd Fret. FCDGCD Tuning would be for a Soprano Lisboa that's in a Mandolin pitch.
@@FernandezMusic I heard Fado Menor in D Minor which sounds great. But if you wanted to play it in the original F Minor Key just put a capo on the 3rd fret. Tuning the Lisboa Portuguese Guitar FCDGCD would require really really light gauge strings made for that tuning (7s or 6s) or having a super short scale length version called "Sopranino Lisboa".
As I understand the matter, there are 2 types of Portuguese guitar picks. The ones for Coimbra style are rounded like the fingertip. The Lisbon style have have a 90 to 120 degree pointed tip. The Coimbra style index technique uses a rest stroke while the Lisboa style uses a free stroke. Both styles seem to use an in and out stroke (dentro e fora). These are different techniques than used by American Acoustic guitar players.
@@FernandezMusic There's a company called Dragao from Portugal that makes Picks for Portuguese Guitar & they also make good Portuguese Guitar string sets which are Silver Plated Copper Wound. Portuguese Guitars also have a Strap button so you could also attach a Guitar strap to keep it in playing position.
I learned the Portuguese Guitar part on Mandolin.
Good job. This music can sound good on mandolin. I have a book of fados written for mandolin from before 1920.
@@FernandezMusic They happen to be Portuguese Guitar fados transcribed for Mandolin. I decided to play this piece in the Original key of F minor by putting a Capo on the 3rd Fret so I could emulate the older Soprano Lisboa Tuning (FCDGCD). There's also the Guitolao which is a Tenor Portuguese Guitar tuned GDEADE, but you could tune it down a step to FCDGCD & play in the Original F Key.
The Portuguese guitar can also be tuned beadf#b (like a Baritone Guitar but an Octave Higher) so you can strum it like a Standard Guitar & play familiar songs like "Here Comes the Sun" or this one:czcams.com/video/c2ck9WJIdi8/video.html
Thank you for your comment. There are also old 18th century English Guittar (notice the 2 T's) tunings. The "English" Guittar was played in Colonial America. Supposedly Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Ben Franklin had such instruments in their houses. It was tuned CEGceg or GBDgbd.
I should noted that in the last 2 years I have added a number of transcriptions of Portuguese Guitar fado and variations on my website: www.fernandezmusic.com/PortuguesemethodContents.html There are transcriptions of nice pieces by Reynaldo Varella and Joao Victoria as well as an early 19th century Fado do Marinheiro and a Minuete Da Saudade from 1796.
@@FernandezMusic GBDGBD is Dobro Tuning, CEGCEG is Quart Dobro Tuning as if it's a Dobro w/ a Capo on the 5th Fret. BEADF#B is also great for singer-songwriters so you could use familiar Guitar chord shapes.
Well done for aspiring luthiers
muito obrigado :)
Hello, i recently bought a lisboa style guitar and would like to learn the piece you played here. May i ask what it is called please?
It is my own piece composed partly within the harmonic structure of the traditional Fado Menor and partly distinct from it.
In the free lesson on my fernandezmusic website I have written out a number of fados from old method books from early 20th century by Reynaldo Varela and others. I have added the Spanish guitar parts. There is a lot of authentic material there.
@renesajan Portuguese guitar Gaspar Varela czcams.com/video/IZfCE66x7y4/video.html Luis Guerreiro, Marta Pereira da Costa, Ângelo Freire, Pedro Castro, José Manuel Neto,...................................................................
Fernandez Music I noticed that this instrument has a Classical Guitar Tie Block bridge & Tailpiece system.
That is correct. It is typical for this instrument in Spain.
@@FernandezMusic Lots of Latin American and Spanish instruments (like Bandurrias and Lauds) use both a Classical Guitar Tie Block Bridge & Tailpiece because it allows the top to vibrate more freely, reduces the "curling" stress around the bridge in the soundboard, and gives the instrument a bit more volume and a slinkier feel.
0:50 This Tuning is essentially the same as a Guitar w/ a capo on the 3rd Fret aka "Terz" Tuning (G, C, F, Bb, D, G) so it's great for covering alot of old music written for Terz Guitar.
2:28 Plays Bach's Minuet in G Major (but sounding in Bb Major because this is tuned like a Terz Guitar).
I am glad that you recognized it. I had forgotten that I played it on this instrument. I have this instrument for sale.
@@FernandezMusic I recognize that Tuning, it's the same as a Guitar w/ a capo on the 3rd Fret aka Terz Tuning. Magma makes great Laud Strings, LA100 is Nylon & LA110 is Steel.
Magma LA100 Strings would sound interesting
I have exactly this laud...made by Esteve in Valencia, Spain in 1982. It was in pretty rough shape when I bought it (privately) but it's undergoing restoration . Loved hearing how you have tuned yours and really enjoyed listening to the music you played on it. Thank you for posting the video.
0:52 This is tuned like a Guitar with a capo on the 3rd Fret aka Terz Tuning.
Magma makes good string sets for it which sound very cool.
Thanks for this, Ron. I bought a Manzanero from Guitar Salon in 1985. Always wanted to know more about it. The guitar is in Jakarta now. Would love to get it into the right hands now that I've moved on to different instrument.
Greetings David. I suggest that you inquire with Guitar Salon.
Excelente
Nicely done. I bought a decent Cordoba from a shop because an Amazon comment on the guitar suggested I do that, if the shop checked and fixed any minor flaws they found in the guitar, as you have shown so nicely here. Anyone buying a guitar from Amazon might consider doing the same thing. I got my Cordoba from Calido Guitars, I couldn't be happier with it. They lowered the action, checked the frets, made sure there was no buzzing, etc.
VERY interesting! I simply superglue acrylic nail powder to my nails and file. Seriously caveman stuff but it’s great for the Blues. 👍
Your technique is common to flamenco players. The Portuguese fingerpicks have been developed fir more than a century. At first they used zinc or even better for sound was tortoise shell. Of course a century ago they did not have superglue. The other matter is the natural shape of your nails. If you have strong nails with the right shape your method could work well.
