I don't think people are aware of how big of a role Namco played in the PlayStation's success. Their arcade ports were the best to be seen at that time and really stole the show from the Saturn. Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Ace Combat showed off what the PS1 was capable of, and blew the door off of all the competition

The PlayStation was simply the best system in the 5th generation with its library so vast and varied compared to its competitors, the biggest reason for the PlayStation crushing the N64 and the Saturn is the price and being easy to develop for along with all the other reasons listed in your awesome video, in short the PlayStation changed gaming forever.

I honestly never expected for this video to blow up like this, so thank you all so much for your support, it really means the world to me!🙏
I know that it has been quite a long time since I uploaded, but rest assured I haven't forgotten about this channel and I am very much working hard to make new content to upload here.
I Have just finished my Smash 4 Complete history which was the biggest project I've ever taken on and I'm super proud of how that came together.
but now that has wrapped up my main attention is back onto PlayStation for Part 2 that will focus on the PS2!
Thank you all for your support and patience, writing, researching and creating these videos on my own takes quite a long time and a lot of work.
so in order to grow the channel while I'm researching and writing the script I may upload some shorter videos focused on different formats to help grow the channel between Complete History videos.
So if you would like to see more content if you could give the video a like👍 , or Subscribe :yt: It really does help to grow the channel!

The Megadrive used the same Yamaha sound chip of many of the late 80s arcade games that they initially ported. I figure they thought it would give more authenticity to their ports. The SNES was pure shock-and-awe when it came to sound.

Great research in this video. Back when the PS1 launched in the UK I had no idea Nintendo and Sega had been involved with Sony in creating what came to be the Playstation. I was 11 years old in 1995 and was lucky enough to have parents who bought me a Playstation. After owning an Atari XE, Mega Drive, and Atari Jaguar it was one of the biggest leaps forward I have ever seen in video gaming. The next one was later in the 90s with the Voodoo 3d effects graphics cards on PCs but that's another story!

The circle/x yes/no thing is interesting because from what I remember it really varied between games and depended on where a game was made, Japanese games tending to use circle for yes/OK but European games using X.

Yeah you're exactly right, it did vary depending on the developers location, I remember being so confused by it back in the day.

Can’t be surprised what the PlayStation brand has devolved into, considering they got into the game out of spite. Their hearts have never been in it like Nintendo. Still I am wholly grateful that they did, just not surprised what they are today

    Good job, man!
But I have to say that the choice of which sound chip is better between Genesis and SNES is very subjective.
I think it just comes down to if you prefer the punchier and "heavier" sound of the Genesis or the softer and more orchestral sound of the SNES.
An example that definitely puts the Genesis in the lead is something like Alien 3 on both systems. That soundtrack is amazing on the Genesis, whereas it's kind of a garbled symphonic mess on the SNES.
Songwriting in general is not an insignificant factor either, of course, and there are strengths and weaknesses between both, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as the SNES having a couple more channels for composers to work with and therefore being objectively superior.

    • @RESRetro
      @RESRetro  Před rokem +1

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting, especially such a well-written and thought-out point 🙂
I completely agree with you there, you're entirely correct. initially, this point was intended to be focused on the technical specs between the chips, however, in the end, I can see it does sound quite negative towards the genesis which was never my intention, there is a lot more to debate when it comes to audio preferences.
The genesis has a really distinctive sound and some really great soundtracks too, In the future, I would love to do a video going in-depth on the genesis and highlight some stand-out soundtracks.
Hope you enjoyed the video overall and thanks again for taking to time to write this 👍

Earthworm Jim 2 for SNES vs Genesis/MD there's no comparison. It usually seems to be that stuff made for the nintendo instrument sets sound more consistently good, but a really well designed Mega Drive soundtrack far surpasses anything on the SNES. There's nothing on the SNES with as much technical depth as the Streets of Rage soundtracks for the way sounds were manipulated. The most talented composers seemed to be able to get a lot more out of the Mega Drive.
