-  crazy day today the guys worked really hard and put in the cubicle bases ready for the actual cubicles to go in at the weekend. We concreted the bases. The little polls were already stood up. I drove the bobcat. Roy drove the Merlot which was a great thing as we got it done faster. The fellas pulling concrete literally did the hardest job as always, but wow, what a difference when these cubicle bases are in the concrete was so wet that I had to stay up late and try to float it and edge myself, which wasn’t absolute disaster, I definitely need guidance when doing something like this and letting me lose to do it on my own was probably very irresponsible, not mentioning any names Gary it is entirely his fault that I made a mess and went to bed at midnight 100% laying the blame at his door, not mine explaining what was in the expensive pallet thanks to Tom Pemberton. This wasn’t a shock to us as he had already explained how expensive the system was for the Collinson tower. Can’t wait for this to come. We are concreting a pad this week pad is huge comes halfway across the yard talking about livestock, seasonal, livestock removal and how it does not agree with the way we farm at the moment it just doesn’t seem to work hence us making third cut bales.  in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve

I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

Hi Charlotte, I watched you interview on Farming Britian and true to form you were your natural self. The cubicles are all coming together and you said the dream team (yourself & Roy) are going to finish it off, putting the red stall barriers on the steel uprights. I follow Tom P as well and understand what you are saying about the auto feeding he uses. It is a great feature of his new dairy. You should get an auto manure scrapper, farmers are really happy with them and you just need to convince Roy he need one. Your work floating of the concrete is amazing for an apprentice but have you put your name and date in it for history. Do you know how much concrete you have used so far? Good luck fixing all those cubicles charlotte- i hope you and roy work well together in close up situations, they arnt as easy as you think to start with, but develope a system and youll be ok. Oh, charged up compact drill batterys and plenty of sockets/ spanners!!
You are some grafter Charlotte. I’ve absolutely loved watching this shed coming together. You are highlighting farming in such a great way. I hope you protected all that lovely shiny galvanised steel from the concrete, as the concrete will eat the galvanise.
The anxiety and anticipation watching and waiting for you to make a huge mess of the concrete (because of your thumbnail description) either by standing on it or driving on it, but what an anticlimax you bugger. 😂

Its lookin good. Use the troughs Tom P uses for water to clean you just pull a bung out and it drainsthen can just wash out

Hi Charlotte when big concrete floor are put in , the often come back and work very late to power float the floors.
They use a machine what looks like a upside down helicopter.

How do you manage to do, hours like you do and still be smiling the next day, I have worked with people if they did them hours they would be like wasp with a slapped behind. The shed is coming on leaps and bounds, well done to you and all involved you have done a grand job.

Great concrete Charlotte, that bucket brush saves time, but a bit dusty on the Bobcat...😷. Nice to see a good overhang where you're gonna feed, is there a gutter round the building, or was that prohibitively expensive, would sure get a lot of rainwater for something. ❤

Yes there’s a gutter it’s plastic and a bit small though we have put another downspout on so it doesn’t get in the silage when it’s raining hard

Be very careful pressure washing wood as it can open the grain of the wood, and if it does open the grain it makes it easier for water to sit on it soak in and rot quicker

@@charlotteashleyfarm a stiff brush if you want to get rid of the green algae will be a hell of a lot quicker than a sponge, and the sprays to kill it off leave a black mark

You’ll be surprised how quickly cows can empty a trough particularly the one closest to the robots where they come in off grass. The rest won’t get used as much. Maybe less of an issue with robots than coming out of a parlour or off grass to a parlour.
Someone else said that don’t put too many at the other side or make them smaller as they will all go to up the top near the robots
As you know,the most important thing is that everything is color coordinated!

Mad busy here today and watched the first half with the grandkids before milking and watching the second half with the lads ( adult sons your age actually probably older than you) the big question here in this house is where have you got the money tree ? We think it’s at the front of the house since you never show it in the videos ( I was dared to ask this by the way we all know that you are a famous artist and internet star so money is not a problem!) . FYI putting in the cubicles is handy enough laying the mattresses is a bitch especially if they send you the wrong fixings! Oh and leave at least an inch of concrete at the back of the mattress, ask me why ah go on go on go on! Feck I knew you reminded me of someone! Regards from Ireland.
