  • MPs have voted 250 to 232 to prevent the immediate suspension of former Conservative minister Owen Paterson.
The amendment - tabled by Dame Andrea Leadsom - has also started the process of reforming the House of Commons standards system.
As opposition members shouted "shameful" and "what have you done to this place", Commons speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said: "You might find it shameful, but I think I am in charge."
Mr Paterson, who allegedly breached lobbying rules, said after the vote: "The process I was subjected to did not comply with natural justice.
"All I have ever asked is to have the opportunity to make my case through a fair process. After two years of hell, I now have the opportunity to clear my name."
