  • For a period in 1988/89 the Belfast - Dublin Enterprise was extended through to Dun Laoghaire. This film follows one of the first runs in May 1988 between Dublin Connolly and Dun Laoghaire behind NIR loco 112.

Many thanks indeed for recording these rare scenes. For one year only, 1988/89, the 16.00 from Belfast Central was extended to Dun Laoghaire to connect with the evening sailing to Holyhead. Highly favoured by bashers, as one of the few trains to call at Dun Laoghaire that was loco hauled.

I have checked the first edition of Irish Railways Traction and Travel published in 1987, and the second edition published in 1989. Neither has this 1988 loco diagram in. So I am scratching my head to ponder how we new about it, when designing our 1988 holiday. Thinking back, I probably met Peter Jones of the Irish Traction Group on the Pathfinder Tours' Balligo Divider, and maybe Peter issues a supplement for his 1987 book. Both show a 15.00 departure from Belfast Central that was 111 hauled. So I might have got the departure time wrong.

Those coaches look like they’re in British Rail livery.

Fantastic to see this, another amazing video thank you for sharing! Have you any idea why the Enterprise was extended to DL, was it a ferry connection?

For one year only, 1988/89, the 16.00 from Belfast Central was extended to Dun Laoghaire to connect with the evening sailing to Holyhead. At the time, it was the furthest south a NIR 111 loco was booked to go. Regular bashers used it, as it was also one of the few loco hauled passenger trains to call at Dun Laoghaire. The other being known by all as the "Up Arklow" (the Arklow to Mosney, which called at DL at 08.03). Both trains being highly favoured by bashers, as we chased loco hauled and avoided karts (diesel / electric multiple units) wherever possible. Sadly kartism spread across Britain, Ireland, Europe and has now reached North America. Favoured by accountants, loathed by passengers who like comfortable rail travel, which character.

@@vicsams4431 Thanks for the info! Aye, I figured it would likely be for the ferry alright. I wonder would the NIR crew have been cleared to run south of Connolly or would a CIE driver have handled that part?

1988 is a long time ago, dear friend. My old marbles cannot remember. I am lucky to still have some left ! I don't recall there being a crew change at Connolly, so my guess would be the train was worked to Dun Laoghaire by a NIR crew.

      Kart!
      What an appropriate word.
Multiple units around Toronto, operated by Government of Ontario, shall henceforth be known as GO-karts.

@ThomasBurke2683 I am glad you like the name. I have done every line in Canada except Churchill. Including Sept Iles to Schefferville, Toronto to Moosonee, Vancouver to Calgary, Skagway Alaska to Carcross Yukon Territory, Prince Rupert Halifax, Sarnia and Windsor to Senneterre and Jonquiere, to Pearson Airport, all of GO, AMT, Skytrain, and WCE, and several heritage lines like Orangeville Brampton, South Simcoe, Port Stanley Terminal, Orford Express, Hull Chelsea Wakefield, Chute Montmorency to Le Malbaie, Ottawa Science Museum, etc. Canada is such a small country, you can clear all of it easily in just a few trips ! LOL ! Siemens Challenger locos will break your tracks. Just what VIA does not want, more speed restrictions. Should have kept the P42DC and F40PH-3 locos.
I have also cleared all FIVE railways in Alaska. Done the Maple Leaf as Vermonter too.
Done every railway in Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Norway, Isle of Man, and most of Europe.
      I am happy to help.
Ridden with the train driver / loco engineer in Canada, Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria and Hungary.
Not much. Just average for a Brit. Mates have cleared every railway in over 60 countries, so I still have a long way to go !
Never understood why North Americans use cars. We have 200 mph trains. Some lines have trains every 45 seconds. Not once a week !
      Love Canada. Love Canadians.
