    • @Chungus581
      @Chungus581 Před 3 lety +13

      Yeah idk why people keep saying it’s Constantinople. The name itself sounds almost exactly like the word for city in Phoenician, has a similar government and political history and also is a trade power house of a city state. Also it’s older than many other cities which, had Carthage as a political entity survived into the Middle Ages, it would’ve been thousands of years older than Venice (Braavos) or any European city (all Wedterosi cities)

    • @BroadwayRonMexico
      @BroadwayRonMexico Před rokem +7

      @@Chungus581 People compare it with Constantinople because of its role as the gateway between East and West, and how it controls one of the most important straits for merchants.
      Considering how George often likes to take influence from 2 or three real world cultures for places in his world, it's probably the case for Qarth as well

    Curious that no one remembers that the scene where the gate to Qarth opens, the view is almost identical to that of the Grey Havens in the Lord of the Rings. And this scene was based on 2 paintings. One was by J.M.W Turner, the British romantic painter. His painting "Dido building Carthage" was the main inspiration. Actually, Qarth is painfully based on Baghdad.
    Ancient Muslim cities were cities that had this three wall structure, three walls going around the entire city that separated social classes and different districts, something Baghdad was built in. The House of the Undying is based on The House of Wisdom, a building of Baghdad that had compiled almost all the knowledge in the known world, including mathematics and sciences, history and philosophy, and where some of the greatest scholars and learned men converged to make scientific, medicinal, and mathematic discoveries. The city of Baghdad, in the Middle East, is the crossroads between Europe, Africa, and Asia, the crossroads between the North and South and East and West, so to speak. All major trading routes at that time either converged at or had a major offshoot going to Baghdad. The nomenclature surrounding Qarth ("The greatest city that ever was or ever will be", "the queen of cities") is exactly the same that surrounded Baghdad and its royalty (the king of kings, etc.). Baghdad is situated on both sides of the Tigris River, as is Qarth situated on a river. The city of Qarth and Baghdad were surrounded by an almost impenetrable desert, and it is obviously by looking at the cultures, marketplaces, and way of dress that George R.R. Martin based Qarth on Baghdad.
    Anyone who has an education could see the similarities between the two cities could immediately tell it was based on Baghdad. Qarth is *not* Las Vegas, nor is it any other city people claim it to be in the below comments (like Constantinople).
    Cheers.
