- It's trailer-tastic this week as we've just had trailers for The Acolyte, House of the Dragon Season 2 and Alien: Romulus. Plus, bad news for the 20 or so Star Wars fans that are left, as George Lucas puts his weight behind Bob Iger in the proxy battle for the Disney board. Join me, MauLer, Ryan Kinel, Robot Head and The Angry Badger as we talk about all of it.

I was on board with the guy talking about Dune until he brought Tolkien into it. He assumed that Tolkien was an authoritarian because he is a monarchist, but if you know anything about Tolkien he was a borderline anarchist who believed that monarchy was the only way to properly limit the state. He is very explicit about that in his writings.
Tolkien didn't like Dune because it was cold realistic Machiavellianism, rather than the romance and myth that Tolkien dedicated his life to creating. The One Ring is absolute power corrupting even the most humble of people in Frodo who succumbs at the end, and it takes Gollum to destroy the ring accidentally.
Master "Close your eyes, what do you see?"
Rodian with hand over his eyes "I see dead franchises"
"A fan" who's asked "what's your favorite ____?" And answers "all of them" is at minimum not answering genuinely, and at worst doesn't even know wtf you're talking about.
It's funny, because "I can't decide" is effectively the same phrase, but has a totally different meaning.
12:25 - Back in 1992, at the University of Maryland, College Park, a new wing was added to the Student Union building: the Diversity Wing. It had offices for Arabic, Chinese, Korean, African-American, Caribbean, Pacific Islanders, etc. No offices for British, Scottish, German, Italian, Greek, Irish, etc. And it was then that I realized "diversity" meant "anything but white."

one must remember that when Qui Gon first told the council about his encounter with Darth Maul, they weren't all that keen to believe Qui Gon's assessment that he was facing a Sith

@@tjjordan4207 yep but my point is that they maybe could have and didn't believe it, as they were hesitant to do when QuiGon raised it
Tolkien wrote a letter to a friend saying that he did not like Dune but essentially said he would not dis a contemporary author while they were still writing you can find the letter pretty easily. His quote is “I dislike dune with some intensity”
My speculation about his dislike is not just based on Dune's pessimistic world view, but how on-the-nose -- nearly allegorical it was. Dune is the middle east, the Fremen are Arabs, and Spice is Oil. Tolkien's world was never a commentary on our present, real world. Dune pretty obviously was.
@@klaptongroovemaster And comes across as Arab fantasy power porn on top of it. The Fremen invade the universe and because they're the bestest warriors ever, everyone manages to lose to them despite the VAST technological disparity between any Great House and the Fremen. IRL, it'd be more like the Anglo-Zulu war where yes, the Zulu did win some battles, but the attrition rate is so lopsided that they lost the war.
I love the fact LotR and Dune came out around the same time
@@dragonknightleader1 The only tech gap that would change things is the shields but as we see with the sardukar the intense skills of the freemen let them overcome that. So any other fighting force is doomed.

Maybe I've been duped by disingenuous word-of-mouth opinions, but literally everything I've heard about Mr Lucas for the past ~25yrs has painted him as extremely lucky more than some great visionary.
I think he is both. He is a great visionary but he needs someone to reign him in and help.
To which he was very lucky to have help with the original sw trilogy and the first 3 Indiana Jones movies
I mean look at the prequel trilogy great ideas and concepts that could have been a brilliant trilogy. However he had full control at that point so they are kinda a mess with no one to reign him in.
@@stempest7218I think the plot of the PT is underrated. Dialog was crap and a few lore mistakes, but the framework of the plot is better than the OT, imo, because NH is just a space version of the heroes tale, Empire feels like it's incomplete because it's setting up return of the jedi, and jedi is problematic too.
Agreed. You could reshoot the PT almost shot for shot with just changing some dialogue around and make it roughly equal in quality to the OT, if not even better due to the larger scale.
It's a damn shame what they did to Star wars, If you would have told me 25 years ago the Star wars would be ruined and be a laughing stock I would have told you you were crazy.

Ahsoka's story ended when she died. She died when she fought Anakin. We didn't see it but saw the aftermath. But it was taken back later on to introduce one of the stupidest things in Star Wars. Yes Ahsoka likely should have died during Order 66. But if she survived. We saw how she survived and we saw how she died. At the hands of her Master. Just wish we could see how the fight would have actually gone on behind those shutters. Her fighting for her life and possibly making a mistake or Vader becomes too fast and boom. The unfortunate thing about stargrift is that they started it way way after anyone gave a fuck about star wars anymore lmao, like it's so culturally irrelevant now lol

Where are all the hot chics and rugged dudes, missing the good ole days
You're so right. I watched the original Road House movie for the first time yesterday.
It's so much better than that new remake. Not just because of the female cast being 'fully utilised', but the characters were better, the plot made more sense, and it actually had a gritty feel that you'd expect with a movie like that. The remake has no identity.
On that note, I'm not even gonna bother lol, I'm assuming no identity and no throat rip because there are no high stakes either. Hot chics, action, rugged dudes, developed characters, obituaries, and a good narrative is all we need and ask for in our entertainment. And they only need to land 4 out of the 6 lol. It's like having a conversation with four other people while everyone is blindfolded. You'd be surprised how much we rely on body language for a conversation to flow naturally.

We know Tolkien did not like Dune because he was sent a copy and he wrote back with thanks that he already had a copy previously from before it was published and he felt as author he should not be negative towards works of others as he dislikes the negative outlook on people it has, so he prefers to not comment at all, though he expected it would find an audience. By the way to you want to have the book back or can I pass it on to someone else? That was the sum total of his public statements about Dune. So yes, he did not like the book and he did not make a big deal about it.

Paul is evil. You are reading Sauron's rise to power. Not Frodo/Eragon making mistakes.
Paul is not evil. He's beset by expectations from all sides and visions of great evil no matter his decisions - so he desperately struggles to pick the road leading to the least damaging of all those paths. He's a tragic hero, one that ultimately fails to be a saviour.

That Lizo comment was hilarious!
Imagine a story where a Stormtrooper gets separated from his unit and stuck on some planet with an old-school Puritan vibe, on an out-of-the-way lost planet that knows nothing of the Empire. You get a pawn turning to a hero, seeing the world he was bred into in a different light and finding something good. Then he has to defend it. It’s old, it’s hackneyed, but it still makes a better story than Disney Star Wars. And I came up with it in two minutes, on the toilet.
Honestly, God Emperor of Dune is the best book in the series. I love how wacky it is
Tolkien wrote in a letter he didn't like Dune "with some intensity" or words to that effect but he refused to give a reason publicly because he didn't want to disparage a fellow author publicly.
Was talking to a friend who is a business process advisor (yes that is an actual job) talking about what has happened at Boeing. He said that the reason all these companies are failing is that 50 years ago managers got bonuses for surpassing what was expected in their job. Then about 30 years ago managers got bonuses for just doing their job and not fucking up. Then 15 years ago managers started to get bonuses regardless of their performance. Then 5 years ago managers started to be rewarded simply because of what demographic they represent. This has led to a corporate culture where success and excellence is not only seen as unnecessary but now is seen as a threat.
Add all the dirt people who have been Hollywood insiders for decades have on each other and you now have blackmail combining with a syatem that hates success and rewards just being the right demographic.
It is *absolutely* so they don’t have to pay residuals to the expanded universe writers

Drinker, I love yours and Mauler's show! Please have Ryan on more, he's vastly underated.
I find the whole Dune/LOTR tweet discussion baffling: Tolkien definitely explores how power corrupts. It wasn’t just “good person with power is good, bad person with power is bad”. Frodo offers the ring (aka power) to Gandalf and Galadriel, the two most morally good characters in the book, and both refuse it because they know it will corrupt them, even if they have good intentions. The ring (aka power) CONSTANTLY has a “mind of its own”, similar to the power of “systems” the op mentioned in Dune (although I highly doubt many people before 2000 were using terms like “systemic power structures” or whatever).
Basically Dune would be along the lines of a sci-fi version of “what if…Gandalf accepted the ring from Frodo”.
Dune is also a strong deconstruction and critique of heroism and the hero's journey. Herbert was strongly individualistic and warned against people become reliant on systems but also other people. To Herbert people like Frodo and Aragorn are dangerous and should be treated with a great deal of suspicion since they often lead to ruin.
Paul is good, moral, just, capable, and understanding- but he still can't stop the bad things that result from taking power. The structure itself is what is negative. It's useful, it can accomplish good things, but intentions of a ruler only go so far when the power being harnessed is over countless people

I don't get what you mean by 'Lucas sells out' as if he hadn't already done that in 2012. Literally, by definition, selling Star Wars to Disney. Why would he turn on them now when they're the ones cashing his cheques? I don't have to like it, but it literally makes no sense for him to side against Disney, from a financial perspective.
George Lucas sold out NOW!? Not when he sold it like 12 years ago?
Yeah, that could be argued, too.
Lucas has also withheld the original edits of the OT for decades, forcing the special editions on fans despite huge demand to have the originals back. Hope his recent actions remind people he's not their friend and he doesn't care about what fans want.
I think there's a difference between literally selling, and "selling out" but yeah, don't know why he'd have any loyalty to Disney or Iger.
They're done nothing but shake his creation down for loose change.
@@TableCreed because he gets lots and lots of MONEY
He was likely paid mostly in Disney stock so I am guessing that's a factor. It's more about protecting his investment at this point, I think even he sees Star Wars as a dead franchise at this point.
As far as Dune, much of the book happens in peoples minds, and political intrigue. The movies have to focus on the actions and it is significantly differences because of that.
Damn it ! I missed it again ! Cursed Daylight Savings !! Have a great one. Spring Forward and Fall Back.
Paul is the good guy in Dune. He’s not even really a subversion of the hero trope like people like to claim. He’s in a scenario where there are no good options. It’s not than people misinterpret Frank Herberts work, it’s that Frank likes eating his cake and having it two. 90% of Paul’s options lead back to the Crusade, and he picks the one he thinks is best. Leto 2 ends up leading an even more ethically ambiguous life, and Frank pretty much explicitly says its the right thing to do.

Tolkien's opinion of Dune is covered in his collection of letters. There is a letter response to someone who sent him a copy of Dune to read. He implies that he strongly disliked it, but explicitly says he doesn't want to speak badly of someone actively writing, so he refrains from being direct.
Tolkien does say in a few places how he does not like allegory, and since there's a lot of allegory in Dune, one can infer he probably didn't like Dune much. He gives the person he wrote the letter to the opportunity to have the book sent back to them, or passed on to someone else. I'm sure someone out there knows the specific letter and to whom it was addressed.
I think that you could have good Sith and evil Jedi. The Jedi are fundamentally collectivist in nature, The Sith are fundamentally individualist. Given how evil collectivism can be and usually is, I'm surprised no one has considered this kind of story.

Alien vs Predator 2 for PC was the perfect mash-up of Aliens and Predator. It had the USCMC, Synthetic soldiers that were difficult for the Xenomorphs and Predators to see, the Predator 2 weapons, and all the Aliens up to Alien 3.
Regarding Dune vs LOTR. In LOTR it is pretty much Iluvatar's will that what happens will happen. After thousands of years of struggling with two very powerful evil gods trying to destroy and soil Iluvatars creation, Iluvatar's plan was always to win over Melkor and Sauron. It's not really comparable with the story in Dune. And in Tolkiens world there is definitely good and bad, light and dark, creation and corruption.

Tolkien on Dune: he never said WHY he didn't like it. He only confessed his strong dislike when pressed on the topic. I have heard the opinions of assorted Tokien nerds about why. I tried so hard to get into the High Republic Books. I love books, I love the Jedi, so I took a chance.
Hot garbage. I didn't even get halfway through the first book.
This is directly stolen from the video game; Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. They had twins that went down two paths and it was set in 'The Old Republic', which is their sandbox setting for Star Wars they were allowed to use for their story. The difference is it was stolen from that good story and moved to the 'The High Republic' and changed from male twins to female twins, and completely stripped of good story for the girl boss, DEI message.
If you played the game, the connection (and theft) is obvious. They really have no ethics, and less creativity.

I don't really know much about the Star wars history but From the sounds of it, It feels like the acolyte show is going to be one big setup to make the Jedi order look like xenophobic Nazis and the sith are just fighting back against oppression
The "Revolution Never Ends". For these guys, The Sith are much closer to their ideological views than the Jedi are. They want to portray villains as "victims", and "misunderstood". They want you to become more evil.
I smell a script flip of dark and light just being different styles, but the patriarchy… that’s the real villain that uses these. All the eye rolling modern college student wisdom.
Loved the Dune discussion, I think you guys nailled it, though i would add one thing. The guiild sided with Paul, because he threatened to destroy the spice if they didn't. There is a line near the end of the film that kinds mentions itm but its easily missed. Anyhow, loved the chat, keep up the good work
@27:08 The Sith are not the villains. When the Jedi and the Republic decided that Genocide was the answer to end the Great Hyperspace War, at that moment and forever onward, the Republic and the Jedi have been the villains.
I mean Acolyte team, take some notes from the old republic trailers..
You always have great guests on. You need to have Reaper on more often though. He adds such a blunt analysis to the discussions.
2:13:48 I’m shocked that Drinker hasn’t seen The Sopranos.
