    In my opinion, having lesson only every other week or every month is only a model for adult students because they have the ability to manage their time and are indeed sometimes too busy to have lesson every week and to practice for this lesson.
    Children, on the other hand, really need the "pressure" to practice for the next week because they are still not able to maintain a long-term practice schedule without having a reason to practice. If you do every two weeks with children, at least for my experience as a piano teacher, they will maybe practice some days after the lesson and some before and in between there is a hole of wasted time.
    So, in order to make the study of the Instrument a daily habit of children, a weekly lesson should be required.

      I used to take piano lessons when I was younger before I started the flute and I had lessons every other week but I was a pretty good practicer. So, I think every other week could be a good idea sometimes

      Stefan Bötel I’ve wanted to take weekly private lessons since last year, but financially I haven’t been able to. I did every other week for about two months and I noticed a huge improvement, but I’d like to take them weekly.

    I think frequency of lessons really depends on the instrument as well. The great opera singers of the past used to work with voice teachers every single day, but that’s not a financially feasible option in this modern era. For me as a singer, 1 hour music lessons every single week are vital. The voice is a tricky instrument in general because you really can’t see the “instrument” like the piano or the flute. I have to rely on my teacher heavily to assess my singing so that I don’t form bad habits in the midst of practicing.

      I think the voice also has an additional weirdness: you can't hear it the way other people hear it. Thanks to bone conduction and whatnot, you will never hear how your voice sounds as someone else will. It's amazing when you think about what singers have to cope with.

      It's actually the same for the flute

      @@maddynicolelee VERY late reply here, but when play a flute, your head is positioned right next to the embouchure hole, where the sound primarily originates. The rest of the tube and your own body function as resonating chambers.
      When other people hear you play, they are hearing a sound that has already fully passed through the resonating chamber and projected into the surrounding space. When you play, you are hearing proportionally more of the sound before it has fully processed through those resonating chambers, which makes it feel slightly different to you than others.

    I love that you're willing to experiment and be open to different schedules. I felt left behind by traditional music lessons when trying to get back into it as an adult. I knew what would work for me both for my learning style and for my busy schedule, but finding a teacher that could make it work for their business model and schedule was difficult. Your Skype lessons were a godsend!

    I have hour long lessons every week, but I’m my teacher’s only student so I suppose it’s even better that way.
    We usually get to touch up on three exercises in my lesson book, and I realized my understanding of music on my instrument and in general has been becoming better as I learn to look at music differently.
    In short, having oboe lessons for an hour each week gives me the determination and motivation to do better each time, and allows me more time to apply whatever my teacher teaches as well!

    Do you think the twice a month lessons are appropriate for beginner- and intermediate-level students or do the levels not matter?
    I fear that if one is still at those levels, then it gives extra time for mistakes to become more engrained habits.

      @cattymionepotter1939 Před 4 lety

      Yong Guan For beginner students, that could really be an issue. I'd say that real beginners should have once a week for like three or four months and then can go into twice a month schedules (if they are self aware so they can spot most of the mistakes themselves)

    I have a lesson every week but only half an hour. I don’t like long lessons because I think the purpose of a teacher is to listen and give advice etc. If I had longer than half an hour I feel like my lesson would turn into more of practice time than actual learning. I would rather be told something in a lesson quickly, and then practice it all week on my own rather than practice it with the teacher. Does that make sense? 😂

    People can't afford weekly music lesons! That's why they reduce it to fortnightly/monthly.
