    I love to watch your videos! Makes my saturdays much better!!! And WOW... such amazing tips. I work at a State Music School (in Brazil there are Music School in 'Colleges' like the Music Department at FFCLRP - University of São Paulo and what they call "Conservatories" - elementary, middle and high school level music schools - completely different from the rest of the world. I don't know why though). Even working on a public school that have basic the same rules as 'regular school', it's very useful to get a track of everything, lessons, exams, reminders, practice time and etc. Especially because I have to teach and grade their progress as in school. On top of that, there are public instrumental exams, that are a bit like recitals but you have a panel of teachers grading the students... And as in 'regular school' I have to attend parent meetings and etc etc.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  Před 6 lety +1

      That is so interesting! I'd heard bits about the Brazil music school system from other subscribers, so thank you for such a thorough explanation!

    • @pedrohbrinck
      @pedrohbrinck Před 6 lety

      It's very different to the point it's confusing for outsiders. But working at Elementary up to High Schoolers at Music School is awesome. I'm a substitute teacher. The one I'm subbing acumulated hours to extend her vacation. I get to teach from kids (about 8-9) up to elderly adults (a 84 years old student that is a pleasure to teach). Since it's not obligatory to study music everyone can actually enter... even past the school age. I have some psychology and nursing students that are beginning (first year of ear training and piano)!! Our grading differs a lot from ABRSM and RCM-Ca. Most students don't get to a Grade 7 level from ABRSM or Grade 6 level of RCM. Only those who want to study Music as their major. Education in Brazil is so different from United States and Canada... I wish it could be better in terms of access and flexibility, but you can have most degrees (Undergrad, Master and PhD and Post Doctorate) free of charge in Brazil if you pass the entrance exams (which are sometimes waaaaay too hard).

      Oh, I'd love to try wooden flutes! I'm trying to create a more completely playlist of review videos for people to peruse for their beginner and step-up model flutes, while I throw in a few special ones now and again. I just did Brannen last month, so we may need to wait a bit before we throw in a special wooden flute edition. ;)

    can you make a video about starting the flute in a band? i just started in one a few months ago and realized that the teacher cant focus on a certain section, especially a certain person. Can you please say what you think of starting in a band and what to do?

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  Před 6 lety +1

      That's a good one. I think you're already making a great decision in doing your own research and learning as much as you can about the flute and not relying on just what you learn in band. That's really important. If it's within you and your family's budget, seek out a private local flute teacher in your area to help you develop good posture, breathing, and embouchure. Those 3 things are super important to get right within the first year!

I’ve taught for 40 years - and I LOVE seeing/hearing how you run your studio. I am thinking you’ve easily doubled my monthly income being able to teach 8-5! At my age, I can’t teach until 8 or 9 as so many of us have done! I’d love to start my teaching day earlier, and finish so that we can eat before 9!!

    I am a high school student, and my Tri-M honors society has a student mentoring program where we give free lessons to elementary school students for their NYSSMA solos. We, as Tri-M members, get points for induction. We have an email system to prevent no-show students. Unfortunately, some people decide not to show up without telling anyone. It's SO annoying.
    Also, how many second clarinets does it take to change a lightbulb?
    0. None of them can get that high.

      Ahahahahhahahahahaha!!!! Haven't heard that one XD Also, yup, there's really nothing you can do about no-show students who _really_ don't care. In the future, when you build your own studio, you can figure out policies that will help filter out these types of students. :)

      sorry to trouble you but can you make a video about starting the flute in a band (like a school band) because i have just started in one and i have realized the teacher cant focus on a certain section, not to mention a certain person. can you please give your opinions on this?

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  Před 6 lety +1

      That's tough. Your teacher is only one person and there's only so much time they have to work with you guys, so they're going to end up working most with the section that needs the most help. I think you can probably feel free to ask them outside of class hours about how they think you can improve. Usually teachers really appreciate that and _do_ want to help you, even if they don't have the time during class hours. I mean, why else did they become a teacher? :)

    As an adult learner on harp (and an ex-adult learner on viola), one example of flexibility that I'm grateful for is that my harp teacher is willing to do biweekly lessons. My viola teacher was NOT -- it was weekly or nothing, which is just unmanageable for an adult student. I think a lot of music teachers who are used to teaching little kids might insist on weekly-only, but then they push away adult students with adult responsibilities ... and that's how adult learners get the reputation for being flaky and uncommitted. :-(
    That's why I'm so happy to hear you talk about flexibility in scheduling. I'm on the harp for the permanent long haul (even bought a small used pedal harp, which was a big financial layout), and my teacher's willingness to use a biweekly schedule for her adult learners was a HUGE part of enabling that. Let's just say that my harp is in the living room, and my viola is in the closet. :-)
    I'm also extremely fortunate in that she's willing to work with me on my own arrangements as well. I'm already a pianist, so that's not quite so strange as it might be, but ... well, let's just say my harp teacher is fantastic. :-) But still, that biweekly lesson thing was MAJOR for me.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you so much for sharing your story, and I've loved seeing you join the notification squad here! ;) I had a much better understanding of my adult students after I got one foot out of the music world, which is what CZcams has forced me to do since I started my channel. A lot of musicians end up with a pretty skewed perception of how the rest of the world actually functions when they've been cooped up in the music world for too long, so it's not a surprise that a lot of music teachers don't understand why someone wouldn't be able to make weekly lessons. It's kind of sad, but I'm trying to get the word out there to help more music teachers out there understand how at least I see things :)
