With the way college football is these days, I don't think it's conceivable for my Irish to be a national title challenger EVERY YEAR. It takes cycles, building up to have a season, not one football season, but a season of years where they're in the title hunt and then cycle back around. Without the magnitude of the behemoth schools that's how Notre Dame will have to play it. That being said, if they play it right, that can get you a title a decade.

They have a great roster but they’re missing the talent they need at WR, have a mostly new OL, and don’t have the depth needed on the interior DL. They’ll make the playoffs, win the first rd and then lose in the second almost definitely. Maybe if CJ Carr or Deice Knight are as good as billed they’ll have a chance, but that’s 2-4 years from now. I think when the playoff starts ND will be one of the 10 or 11 teams in it hat has enough raw talent to win. They have a tougher road because they'll always have to win 4 games instead of 3. So I rate their chances at (50% x 50% x 50% x 50%... breaks out calculator...) about 6 per cent, in any given year. If they happen to catch a break and be the 5 seed and draw the 12 seed, then it's more like 80% for the first game, which boosts it to 10% in that particular year. I will point out that the same applies to all the other power teams. The chance of Georgia or Alabama or Florida State or Penn State winning the playoff once they get in it is also in the 6-10 per cent range. It's gonna be a total crapshoot.

@dentonyoung4314 whoever gets the 5 will get the 12 seed/worst team in the first round, then the 4 seed which will likely be a much worse team since its the 4th highest conference champion. So you're looking at around 80% chance, then likely a 65% chance to make the semis. And at that point, all the other teams will be coming off a tough game themselves and won't be able to use their whole staff to prepare a gameplay for a month. Think there could be more upsets in the final rounds in this scenario

One of the few times I disagree with Josh. I think with the expanded playoff making the playoff is a big deal; they’d be on the track to win a championship given they can win the games. Unlike in past years, if notre dame finishes 5th they’d be completely eliminated. Now if they finish anywhere in the top 12 they have a chance to compete. Yeah a lot more stuff has to go there way but with a hot streak or injuries they could very well be competing for the championship when in years past they would’ve been completed eliminated. Definitely don’t agree with the expanded playoff but it does expand the possibility for fringe teams.

There was maybe 1-2 elite teams last season. In general I agree with you, but there hasn't been a Bama 2020 team or LSU 2019 team or even Clemson 2018 for a while. While it will be harder to win because there's more games lets see if there continues to lack generational type teams going forward. Notre Dame stacks up far better against teams like Texas and Georgia than they have in the past. This narrative that Notre Dame doesn’t have enough talent is just plain wrong at this point. Marcus Freeman has brought in 3 straight top ten classes. They just hired Mike Denbrock from LSU (they had the #1 offense in the country last year) and they just extended their DC Al Golden. They return a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball, where they had the #6 overall defense in the country last season. They’re going to be a beast.

As an ND fan, the bowl record is appalling. I dont know what its down to. Its not like they are always outmatched physically in the post season at all. A couple of years ago they choked a 28-7 lead against Oklahoma state, who they had a far better roster than in the fiesta bowl. They got beat by Clemson in 2018 as soon as their starting corner went down Lawrence attacked Dante Vaughn and it was game over. 2020 Bama they held up on the lines quite well but didnt have the speed outside.
