The great thing about these classics is since they were filmed so close in time to WW2, many actors and extras actually served in their armies and navies, which reflected in the acting. No matter how good actor you are, if you haven't served, it will be noticed by sharp eyed fans.
Very true. Both David Niven and Anthony Quayle had very distinguished military careers in WW2 for instance. And many behind the cameras would also have fought. The movie was made just 16 years after the war and it shows.
I suppose they are meant to be British agents speaking to German sailors so they wouldn't know the difference 😁! The odd thing is, those "German" sailors were I believe real Greek sailors from the Navy who helped in the making of the movie, playing extras!
The patrol boat was supplied by the Greek Navy but they were annoyed that it got sunk. After this incident they withdrew their cooperation in making the movie. The scene is great although I never understood why the fishing boat wasn't damaged or set ablaze when the patrol boat exploded next to it.
