  • @christophertsiliacos8958

    Great tutorial Alison! You always go above and beyond the call of duty. It appears to me that the first position covers the first two octaves in music. It all depends how far one wants to advance with a particular instrument. Two octaves suffice for me. Besides, playing above two octaves is rather ear piercing for me anyway.
    In fact every instrument I play, including the violin, I play in only two octaves. For example, even though the concert flute and Bb clarinet play in three octaves - I play them in only two. I literally have thousands of pieces of sheet music, including over 700 hymns that are written in only two octaves (first position).
    Incidentally as you know, there are instruments that inherently play in only two octaves. My first instrument is the Bb trumpet which is a two octave instrument for obvious reasons.
    BTW: It is my understanding that you don't advocate fret marks for the violin. I personally have never used them when learning to play the violin. I've always relied on muscle memory, finger positioning, and the sound of each note to guide me. Admittedly it has taken me longer to learn to play the violin that way, but it was well worth it. If I want to play an instrument with fret marks, I turn either to my ukulele or mandolin. 😉

    Maybe I missed something, but on 2nd position, say you were playing on the E string, do you place your first finger on G and move it forward for G# or do you place you finger on G# and reach back to hit G. Or does it depend on what you are playing? Thanks!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 8 lety +3

      in second position on say the E string:
      F#
      G 1
      A 2
      B 3
      C 4
      Everything moves up one. You would put your 1st finger on which ever G the music tells you too. If the key signature says G#s then you put your 1st finger where you would put a G#.

I have all 3 fingers down and then I have to like jump to one finger on the A string. Am I supposed to do that? Is it something I'm just supposed to practice to make quicker and more precise?

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
    @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 11 lety

    I've seen the dots on your fingerboard before, where did you find those? My teacher told me today that I should put a sticker on my fingerboard for the fourth finger, both as a reference for that finger and also to help since I'll soon be learning other positions. I'm not too keen on it, don't want to ruin the fingerboard of my violin, but I kind of like the dots (yes, I realize that's probably silly lol), and was hoping you could help me find some or figure out how they work? Thanks!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 10 lety

      I get dot stickers from a stationary store and i put them on and take them off for loads of my violin videos to demonstrate and they do not leave a mark on my fingerboard at all. I would not put them on my violin if they did!
      I like using stickers as they help to reaffirm your intonation as its really hard to place your fingers accurately on the stings if you dont know what the sound should be in the first place.

    I am not sure you would still respond to this video since it is 5 years old. But I have a question about positions. There is this one piece I play which is horrible for finger positioning "Malaguena" by F. Tarrega in any other key but G. Even then it only goes smoothly if for one part I drop back one note so that my middle finger is playing a B natural on the second string. I might be possible in a higher position. I haven't looked at that since I want the fullness of the open strings that occur in the key of G. So here is my question: What do you call that position?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 6 lety

      A year to late but one extremely easy way for me to learn to read G-clef sheet music is for notes on the lines remember E.very G.ood B.oy D.oes F.ine (bottom to top) and F A C E for the notes in between the lines from there, when you count really high notes start from F and follow the alphabet up till you get to the note on the paper (vise Vera for lower notes)

  • @milena6009
    @milena6009 Před 5 lety

    I don’t know if the problem is the strings on my violin, but I have a difficulty here
    I am using a chromatic tuner to see the perfect pitch of each note.
    So the first position first finger is: (from g to e string): A, E, B, F#
    When I put the finger in the G and D string to make an A and E (first finger) is a little unequal, To make B in A string I have to climb the finger a little and for F# I have to put the finger way lower compared to B in the A string. So it’s not a horizontal line like the tapes you are putting. It’s a little zig zag I have for the first finger.
    Now for second finger in first position, I see a way larger difference: My middle finger when playing G in the E string is very close to the F# first finger
    It doesn’t happen with other strings
    Is this normal? Ps: my violin is perfectly in tune

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 5 lety

      Im not sure exactly what is happening here? The 1st fingers will 'pretty' much be in a line, but not an exact straight line.
      its why I use dots to place in the 1st and 3rd finger positions, right in the middle of the two strings - this way you can see where your finger(s) need to go, but can slightly alter things.
      If you are saying that you have to adjust each finger by as much as you say, then either your violin is set up very poorly, or your strings are not quite in tune.

    • @milena6009
      @milena6009 Před 5 lety

      The Online Piano and Violin Tutor
      Here’s the distance between E and D string. G,D and A string have more distance compared to E, that’s what it is worrying me, cause I know the first has aproximatelly 1 finger of distance from the second finger, the second finger is close to the third finger, and the third finger is 1 finger of distance from the fourth finger (sorry if my English is bad)
      Here is a link: postimg.cc/gallery/32cvslg7m/
      Look the second finger in the E string is very close to the first finger (this is first position)
      D string: notes E and F#
      E string: notes F# and G
      If I do try to make the same thing in the E string as I did with the D string, it’s gonna become an A (third finger in the E string)
      PS.: I ended up breaking my A string as I was trying to fix this problem, but it doesn’t alter the position of the notes (obviously) but just wanted to point it out since you are not going to see an A string in this image

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 5 lety

      I dont know what to say. Im at an absolute loss as I have never in all my 20 years of teaching students, have I ever come across this before.
      The fist fingers will more or less be in a straight line across each string. There may be a millimetre difference, but essentially, you shouldnt need to move.
      The first finger dot you have on the E string, is not in the F# position. Its placed in the F natural position - either that, or the first finger dot you have on the D/A string is wrong.
      Either way, your dots are wrong, or your violin is not as in tune as you thought. Or, more likely, when you put the dots on, your strings were not in tune.
      I can only suggest you take the violin to someone who can physically help you as I cant help with something like this over the internet as I cant hear the violin.

    • @milena6009
      @milena6009 Před 5 lety

      The Online Piano and Violin Tutor hey, I have a finetuner there is like a bar behind the finetuner, that connects to the finetuner (screw) , but for my E string this screw is not touching the bar, and when I put back to where the bar was after loosening the string, when I started tightening again, the screw just doesn’t connect to the bar...
      So I can only tune with the pegs... this is the variance of the E string...
      Do you think it’s a problem to have an E string more tuneful than it has to be?
      Idk how to solve this, but when I try to turn the pegs when I control the screw to be above the bar, it seems the pegs gets loose, like when I turn, it returns backwards. If I don’t control the finetuner/screw, then the finetuner just gets in a side and the bar on the other
      Help me pls ;-;

    hello I have a question it is hard for me to understand because my English is not very good, so my question is on the sheet in first position the finger one represents the first white lane and the yellow lane?

      I dont have the DontFret sticker so I dont know which is which, but they will both be for the 2nd finger. One will be the 2nd finger where its next door to the 1st finger and the other 2nd finger will be stretched right next to the 3rd finger.
      For example, on the D string you would get an F natural with the 2nd finger close to the 1st and an F# with the 2nd finger close/next to the 3rd finger.

    I dont know how to make a mark in 5th position, Is there any measurements?? 😭😭😭 Please Help 😭😭😭

      Khen Base Its not usually a position that gets marked. If you are playing 5th position, then usually one is advanced enough to know where it is and not need the markings.

    Link is broken for me... Thanks for the vid though, helpful. I watch and enjoy many of your videos but I must say you should rethink your intro because it's very jarring, loud, and annoying.
