Shifter: Question and Answer 44 (Mostly me talking about the new Leica M6)

  • Back with another question and answer. You ask and I do the talking. But this one has taken on a distinct flavor due to the first question I was asked. "What do I think about the rerelease of the Leica M6? I've owned four of these cameras, but the camera itself isn't the interesting part of the story. Oh no, this goes way beyond nuts and bolts. Quoting crazed politicians, I spin my web of history, voiding all relevant data and facts in an effort to simply "go with my gut." This event is but one making headlines in the photo community.
    1. 1:14, What do I think of the M6 rerelease?
    2. 30:34, What about sponsors for projects?
    3. 31:00, What about selling prints, sizes, and editions?
    4. 34:40, What about photo contests?

      Writing tools. How can something so simple have so much meaning? I need to fix my actual handwriting, something I've been dreaming about for several decades like learning opening chess moves, learning Arabic or finally starting a meditation practice. Speaking of books, Duane Michals. His handwriting is so much a part of who he is, and every time I see it I am reminded I could never do a book like that because my writing is impossible to read.

      @@DANIELMILNOR505 I love that. Never too late to do it. I've always wanted to learn calligraphy as I've been obsessed with looking at other handwriting and just enjoying handwriting myself. I've got all of my dad's work files with his handwriting (which I sorta modeled mine after when I was a kid and learning) and I want to scan them in to use his handwriting in the book about our years working together.

    Looking at Leica's commercials of the "new" M6 it felt so clear to me that the main target is the guy who've been fed with thousands of street photography videos on youtube, the style is basically the same for many of these commercials. So they diversified a bit from being predominantly a jewelry brand and openly embrace this phenomenon of cool young-aged social media photography people. They identified a great target there, don't know how much it will sell but, surely, people are going to talk about this event (mainly on the internet) and Leica's aura might grow and glow accordingly.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505

      That is exactly what I felt. I'm not sure why the street photography crowd is so impactful but they really are. I've never liked street photography really, so maybe I'm just biased in the sense that I got into photography to do long-term projects. Attached projects, and on those rare occasions when I search out photography, it is those projects I look for. Much of the street work I see just isn't very good.

Now what I do is organize my photos extremely well on a website with several hundred thousand photos I’ve taken including old Polaroids scanned and saved. What I have found is so many of the younger generation in my family all the way to Germany, Ecuador and several states want and enjoy having access to these photos of our family history I’ve saved.

    Shot my first roll of film in 20 years yesterday. How it happened was while in the process of digitizing old negatives, something happened to me while handling the film that made me miss film immensely. I headed into downtown Boston with a newly purchased Pentax K 1000 on one hip and the g7x on the other hip. I loved it. Beyond the cool Factor, beyond the hip counterculture Factor, I loved the simplicity of setting the aperture and the f stop and taking the time to manually focus. I loved the loud kir-klunk. I loved the deliberateness of it, and saving only the good shots for film, recognizing that there was something solid and substantial in my left hand and something more transitory and slightly less real and off the cuff in my right hand. It took a few hours to shoot off 36 exposures, but in the same length of time I shot close to 100 digital images with the Canon. I was even crazy enough to pick up film developing supplies. I have a ton of digital gear - DSLR s, GoPro, tg6 for underwater (yes, I generally have a camera with me at all times, even while swimming), all the lenses, etc. and will not be giving up shooting digitally anytime soon, but I think I'm going to enjoy this new/old diversion. But nah, no Leica for me. And after hearing what you and others are saying about it, I wouldn't be caught dead with the thing. Brilliant, as always.

    Hi Daniel , i make more pictures than watch CZcams these days. Since I first tuned into you, i bought a new Leica film camera and have been using it with a single lens so far. It doesn’t do landscapes particularly well though that rangefinder view is amazing including knowing what’s going on outside the frame. The shutter is especially quiet. Knowing the limits of film and using film for almost a year I’ve become comfortable with the restrictions imposed by film : fixed ISO, low light challenges etc. I also use a Ricoh GRIIIx which complements the film camera. I really enjoyed this video / story. Thanks for reminding us what photography means. By the way my Leica camera is totally non descript. No brand or red dot. Just sheer black chrome.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  Před rokem +1

      Hey, that's the point. Go shoot. And it sounds like you are. It's funny, what you mention about the viewfinder and seeing what is happening is--for most users---a big deal because they use their right eye allowing for them to keep their left eye open to see what is entering the frame. I am right handed but LEFT eye dominant so this all gets lost on me.

  • @theblackandwhitefilmproject

    I traded my M6 for an MP. Very happy to have the warranty. I got a Rewind Crank lever off EBay for $US55 for the rewind issue. Works perfectly. The MP seems smoother and more solid than the original M6. I use it for landscapes and you are so right that it is not the best camera. I have to change lenses inside the camera bag if there is mist. A zoom would be much easier. But that is the point. I have to try harder to get the shot. Zoom with my feet and get a different type of perspective. The sharpness of Leica lenses and the grain of HP5+ is a great combination and totally different from digital. I've had some amazing surprises with analogue. Process the film and just go Wow- how did I do that? Absolutely love the MP and I'm sure the new M6 is just as great. Cheers!

    Always love the videos Dan. I too am quite happy that Leica has brought back the M6, but at that price I'll just stick with my M4. Although I've never heard of the crimping trick, but also never had my camera jam on me, so I must be doing something right.
    I got lucky when I found this one. Had a friend that found a great deal, had it serviced and sold it to me for what he had in it because he liked the work I was producing with my Voigtlander R2M and knew I'd be happy with a Leica. That was many years ago and I've never looked back the M4 and a 35 is all I need. I also make my own silver prints and people are always asking me to make bigger prints. When I get serious about selling them, I guess I'll get around to producing some. But until then I just enjoy working on my small projects and making images.
    Thanks for another great video.

  • @BradleyHansonPhotography

    One of your best videos. I appreciate you, brother. It must be my age (56) because I can relate to and laugh at your subtle jokes. BTW, people forget that Leica was nearing bankruptcy before the M6 came out. The M5 was a distaster, and Leica made the M4-2 in Canada to save money. The M6 was released with cheaper materials to save money. The M6TTL was actually the one where they changed the direction of the dial (I did a workshop in 2004 with Ralph Gibson and he hated the new direction), so the M7 was the same direction, but actually better made with more brass and solid parts than the M6TTL. I’ve owned the M3, M4, M4-2, M6, M6TTL and M7. The M3 was the king for it’s build and 0.91x viewfinder, closely followed by the M4 and then the M7, IMHO.

    About digital vs analogue in terms of preserving I agree in part...I mean I use now just digital and I have everything in three different places, in order to have a redundancy...it's true that film probably in 100 years will be there...but...if you are a "famous" photographer, your digital work will be preserved anyway...if you are an unknown photographer like myself (or I think to my grandpa that for example documented WWII, his life and the one of his family, or his father that took pictures at the beginning of the XXth century) you have to hope that your family will take care of...In our case, my family I mean, there is my aunt that is taking care to preserve the family's memory, probably I will keep her job the day she will be too old, but then? Now she is copying everything digitally because the number of films is huge...for instance, I couldn't keep everything at home right now. I have found a mix, I shoot digitally and then I print the "best" in 5 copies, so the ones that one day will want to have can get them. Anyway as usual great content.

      I think if your famous and you shot film, maybe your work survives. If you are famous and shot digital, very unlikely unless there is a plan in place before you die. I’d be interested to hear why you kept buying M6’s while it seems to me other models would fit you better. Let’s see
    1) you don’t care about the meter
    2) you prefer the old style rewind knob
    3) you only(?) shoot 35 and 50 (and I think it’s nicer to not have two sets of framlines appear at once)
    In my book, that makes M2 the winner. Or maybe M2 with 35 and M3 with 50. The only feature that, in my opinion was an upgrade with M4 and beyond is quicker loading. And that can be fixed by either modifying an M2/M3 or by having multiple take-up spools so you can pre-load and do simple drop-in film changes.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  Před rokem

      The M6 was a dime a dozen. Every photographer I knew had one and most rarely used them, so they were easy to find and cheap to pick up. Many photographers who worked with SLR's and zooms would also carry a Leica with TRIX, as I did. The difference is I dropped the rest and committed to Leica while many others chose to sell.

Smooth as my M3! The frame finder now understood! It' a small camera, very flat to be under a shirt, jacket, parka. Original lenses with 39mm diam. are tiny. What modern camera, even faulty as this will be running in 22 years? Yup! I use mine! Professionally it's a no. Digital has made images needed for yester week. Insanity. I am retired. Question! But the real beauty of that film comes with push processing, something that seems to allude many of the modern users. Skin tone in particular was where it shined. Most of the LA high volume shooters used the NC version and NOBODY rated that film normal and hardly anyone processed it normal. And remember, when Portra arrived the Vericolor folks dug in their heels.
