  • Detectorists is a charming, British comedy series starring McKenzie Crook and Toby Jones. My film is an affectionate tribute which takes you on a walking tour of some of the beautiful Suffolk locations featured in the show and links these to the scenes, in this film I visit the tranquil countryside of Aldham around St Mary’s church.
The Detectorists is a superb comedy, beautifully written, perfectly cast and acted. If you are reading this then you probably have already discovered the show, but if you haven’t seen it yet then I cannot recommend it highly enough to you. Immerse yourself in the world of Lance Stater and Andy Stone and the other members of the DMDC, the Danebury Metal Detecting Club, as they search with their metal detectors for treasure, mostly they only find ring-pulls and toy cars but occasionally they find something special. It is a delightful journey as their various stories gently unfold and inspired me to visit the places that featured as locations in the show. My film shows you the stunning Suffolk locations, linked to the scenes in the show with facts and location details. The Detectorists originally ran for three series which were first shown on tv between October 2014 and December 2017.
Aldham is a beautiful place and prominent throughout series two of the Detectorists. It is where the DMDC hunt for the location of a World War 2 German bomber crash site and it is also where a medieval monk buried a precious astel, to hide it from raiders, which Lance discovers when he does his gold dance. This location featured in the opening credit sequence throughout the second series. The peaceful village has a picturesque Saxon round tower church. St Mary's is a small, pretty round tower church, situated on a hill overlooking a valley. It dates back to at least the 14th century, although the lower part of the tower is thought to be Norman.
This is a great place to have a walk in the tranquil scenic Suffolk countryside and fans of the detectorists can spot the locations used in the show. The walk shown in the film is only a short one so allow about 60 minutes approximately.
If you are looking for a longer walk have a look at walk 2 on this pdf produced by Hadleigh Council which features a 4 mile walk which takes in Aldham St Mary and some of the surrounding countryside. The guide also describes other walks in the area.

    Finding Aldham
Aldham is a small hamlet north of Hadleigh, leading off the road to Elmsett. The walk starts at the church which is located at the bottom of Church Lane, which is a turning on the south side of The Street. The turning is at the west end of The Street, shortly after its start where Cosford Road and Red Hill Road join with it. Address: Church Lane, Aldham, Ipswich IP7 6NP
Parking in Church Lane appears limited so park considerately.
    Finding the DMDC Rally Site
The field used for this location is located to the north of Cosford Road, to the north of the bend, where it joins The Street and Red Hill Road. There is space for parking on the grass by the side of the road. Always park considerately. At the time of our visit there was no access into the field and therefore you are only able to view the location from a distance.
There are a number of other locations nearby not included in my film. Please refer to the location map mentioned below to see where these are, this map is a brilliant resource. Thank you to the person who compiled this and the contributors.

A TV triumph celebrating the beautiful ordinariness of folk and their eccentricities.

The Detectorists is the kind of show that could pick up a new storyline several years later...(hint, hint, Mackenzie; you’ve done it before) 😉😉
