What the hell does "smash burger" mean? Is it the current "stylish" snobbish phrase for A listers? The demonstration looks very much like my common everyday barbecue burgers made on the outside charcoal grill. What is the difference between just a plain old hamburger and a smash burger?

A "smash burger" refers to a specific cooking technique that involves pressing or "smashing" the burger patty onto a hot griddle or skillet. This technique creates a crispy, caramelized crust on the outside of the burger while keeping the inside juicy. The key differences between a smash burger and a regular hamburger are:
Cooking Method: Smash burgers are cooked on a flat surface like a griddle or skillet, where they are pressed down to maximize contact with the hot surface. Regular hamburgers are often cooked on a grill or barbecue, where they are usually not pressed flat.
Texture: The smashing technique creates a crispy, flavorful crust on the patty due to the Maillard reaction, which is less pronounced in regular grilled burgers.
Thickness: Smash burgers are typically thinner than regular hamburgers, which allows them to cook quickly and develop that signature crust.
Ingredients: While the ingredients can be similar, the simplicity of a smash burger often highlights the quality of the beef and the seasoning.
So, while they might look similar to regular barbecue burgers, smash burgers have a distinctive texture and flavor profile due to their unique cooking method. Give them a try and see if you can taste the difference!
