This tutorial is not an invitation to copy any of my original copyright protected wing designs! Feel free to use the Piera Clearwing file I provide or other designs direct from nature, or create your own from scratch. At the bottom of the materials list are resources for insect wing images to help you out.
    ~
First I should get the the question of "where can we get / how can we make those flapping mechanical wings?!"
Well as of Dec. 24 2020 I can answer: we have a guide available! But you need to be experienced in electronics / robotics already or have someone knowledgeable to help you. It won't tell you how to do basic soldering for example, but you can find lots of tutorials for that. Adafruit is one resource you can check out.
The DIY guide is here: / flapping-fairy-45413944
Now that that's out of the way, welcome to the first ever Fancy Fairy Wings & Things Iridescent Wings tutorial. You'll learn how to construct fairy wings with iridescent film, poster board and wire, no glue required! I'll spill some wing making secret recipes to feed your crafting appetite. Please note that this is a tutorial for grownups due to the cutting and heat tools in use.

I'm so glad this will help you out :D Please remember to change any of the designs slightly if they're my original designs, even if just for personal use it's better if there's a little variation so people can recognize they aren't the ones purchased directly from me and also so people don't jump to the conclusion that you might be wearing a knock-off purchased from another vendor - because there've been quite a few who have tried to sell copies unfortunately. It also makes them more unique to your own fairy character :)

@@fancyfairyangela I have a quick question, I’m doing my own design and the veins fully wrap around the wing, so I was wondering for adding the wire if I need to do anything differently/modify the design, since I know yours just has a top wire then a tiny bit on the bottom as opposed to it being a continuous line all the way around
( I can show photos/concept art in an unlisted video if that would help )

Literally just made some wings today! There's definitely a bubble/loose area around the wire, but thats just the nature of a round wire. Got a good seal around the poster board I used and just trimmed around with scissors leaving like a .25"- 5" around the poster board just in case.
Also was able to just use a home iron but definitely iron with an ironing board and a towel/pressing cloth with the cellophane half facing down. Other wise it'll melt and distort your cellophane (which actually kind of made a cool effect if you wanted to test it on scraps and use it on purpose). Now just gotta finish sewing the rest of my costume for the ren faire. Thank you for the tutorial!

I've seen your wings for some time and I once was trying to make some wasp wings for a cosplay which ended up horrible! I never would have thought of using clear sticky vinyl. Such a game changer!! Never would have thought of that years ago and I do have a cricut now and access to that vinyl 🤔 makes me want to add a winged character to my cosplay plans

So cool! I paint faeries (love the old English spelling!) and have three painting videos of them now on CZcams! Kind of nervous to do a talking one like you have done but I will eventually try it. No time to make these but so very beautiful and I love how yours move! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much!! I have admired your work for so long. I make wings, myself, but I enjoy hand-shaping my wings with wire and floral tape. I never thought to use electrical tape, I'll try it and see if I like it. It would definitely lead to less-sticky hands, ha!
Also that heat-gun is the freakin best, I use the same one.
One of the things I'm always on a hunt for is a more durable material than the one I've been using for years. I use Art Glitter Fantasy Film and though I absolutely love it, it can get a little brittle with too much heat, so that thermoweb iron-on vinyl might just do the trick.
Thank you so much for sharing your artistry with us.

You are so very welcome! And thank YOU for providing such a magical product. It has seriously been the best secret ingredient, allowing me to keep my film smooth as possible and even able to re-position when needed. I'm relieved I don't have to keep it a secret anymore and maybe you'll have some new customers ;)
