    The Non-Canon Expert explains why more Jedi didn't use double-bladed lightsabers, describing why the Jedi Order frowned upon their use given their connection with the Sith and the devastating actions taken by a fallen Jedi named Exar Kun. Further, he will explain why double-bladed lightsabers conflicted with the Jedi Order's philosophy of lightsaber combat.

    Hey everyone! I hope your week is going well. For our Star Wars The Old Republic: A Complete History multi-video series, I decided to add in an opening Prelude episode to start with. This will allow me to touch on and explain some of the pre-Old Republic era leading up to the Galactic Constitution, particularly the topics of the Rakata and the Infinite Empire (which is a lot of fun anyway :)). This will put us in a better position of knowledge for Episode 1: The Birth of the Republic.
    Because I had a late start on the Prelude, and I don’t want to rush it, the first Prelude video will be released this Saturday, May 27th. However, going forward each new episode will continue to be released every Friday until we get through the entire era. Thank you for your ongoing support everyone! I hope you enjoy today’s video, as I thoroughly enjoyed putting this one together.

      It could work if she develops a defensive style based on counters like Darth Zannah, but that requires quite extensive training and considering that she, will have to act in combat situations, before her training is finished a single saber style combined with a more aggressive style, that builds on her experience with her staff. Also fghting with a staff is fundamentally different to fighting with a staffsaber, simply because you can grab a staff everywhere. She could learn to enhance her staff with the force to make it resistant to lightsabers, but that would take more time to learn than she probably has, if it is a difficult technique, there are no sources about how long it would take to learn and correct me if I´m wrong, but only one Jedi used to fight this way, ironically it was Exar Kun´s master and we know how that turned out. After all the most practical thing would be to learn to fight with a normal lightsaber and then expand when she is competent with that.

      True, but it was possible to activate just one blade at a time in many saberstaves. The blades tended to be longer than a standard lightsaber too, so there were options in regards to how it was used.
      Plus if you cut the handle in half, they were designed as such that you could still use at least one of the blades due to having two kyber crystals (as seen with darth maul)

    "In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. Because the weapon is difficult to master, however, few among the Jedi - or even the Sith - understand it. They don't know how to attack or defend effectively against it. That gives those of us who use it an advantage over most of our opponents."

    Exar Kun's double-bladed lightsaber was special because it still had a regular hilt, which made it look like a single-bladed lightsaber. Darth Maul's lightsaber on the other hand was basically just two lightsabers welded together. Which did provide the advantage of still functioning after being cut in half, since it had two crystals and two power sources.
    The strict adherence to the discouragement of anything Dark Side related by the Jedi can ultimately be seen as a self-inflicted blindness towards anything that clashed with their ideology. When the Dark Side did rise, the Jedi were unprepared. Maul proved this when he destroyed two Jedi with ease and only failed because of his arrogance. His aggressive Form VII style and use of a double-bladed lightsaber proved too much for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan, whose Forms were geared more towards deflecting blaster fire and dealing with groups of enemies.

    • @maybebebi7060
      @maybebebi7060 Před 7 lety +11

      That's EXACTLY what made *Exar Kun's* lightsaber one-of-a-kind. It didn't resemble the common staff design like most double-bladed sabers had, and all those who were killed by it NEVER expected the weapon to have two blades, which gave *Kun* the element of surprise against his opponents. After *Kun's* time, no one has been able to create a saber like his due to it's incredibly complex design.

      Perhaps the Jedi feel that double-bladed lightsabers are as much a danger to the wielder than those being fought by them. Wouldn't using two single bladed lightsabers do as well without such cumbersomeness? Besides, wouldn't the staff like double-bladed lightsabers inhibit the movement ranged by single bladed lightsabers?

      @Pun116 Před 2 lety

      What? Qui-Gon Jinn was a master of Ataru and taught it to Obi-Wan. That form is NOT effective against blasterfire, and it's definitely NOT effective against groups of enemies; it's quite the opposite in fact.
      It is effective at soloing opponents, which was perfect for the duel against Darth Maul. The reason why Qui-Gon lost is that he was old. Ataru fatigued him due to the forms commitment to force enhancing the body to maintain speed and rotation.
      A lightsaber staff would actually be perfect for this form, as the extra blade would offset the weakness to being outnumbered. Also, more blades makes an already fast form even faster. The perfect tool for such a cool lightsaber form.

But us Jedi are humane, and only require 1 blade when in battle. On that note, today's lesson is on fatal strikes, our first technique is called, Decapitate. If you take a look here, Master Windu gives us a great example as he executes this strike flawlessly on Jango Fett in front of his 8 year old son. Now if he had done that with 2 blades I'd be worried for that child, the trauma if that would be astronomical compared to 1 blade

    Why is it that nobody in Star Wars knows how to use a double-ended weapon? The correct hand form is hands on opposite sides of the weapon (both thumbs pointed up). This produces a neutral stance with the blades slightly off vertical, which is ideal for blocking. The Sith (Darth Maul, Savage Opress, etc.) always seem to use a '2 hands over' grip (both thumbs to the inside) which puts your neutral position at the horizontal. To block any strike other than a vertical hack you have to cross your arms, which is clumsy.

So theoretically, a jedi could force push or pull someone without moving a muscle.
      The only reasons for someone to use a single lightsaber would be personal preference or fighting style.

    The whole premise that two blades somehow give you a greater rate of attack etc. and is actually a superior weapon is totally flawed. Holding a staff like weapon in the middle like that wouldn't give you any advantage in speed, reach, or anything else, all you'd accomplish is severely limit your range of motion because you constantly have to worry about the blade you aren't attacking with hitting you instead.
    This is one of those really dumb things where people are basically going on video game logic. In reality the saber staff would be a cumbersome and stupid weapon that would have absolutely no merit, and the reason the Jedi don't use it is because it's just not effective.
    The one weapon that would actually have some merit that nobody seems to use is the saber pike, where a single lightsaber sits at the end of a long staff. Spears are actually more effective than swords in a fight, and polearms were the primary melee weapon of war throughout all of history, while swords were more side-arms for personal protection.

    As someone who has trained with actual martial weapons I can say, with absolute certainty, a double bladed lightsaber would be a TERRIBLE idea. The problem is that the lightsaber blade is LETHAL, even when touched with a gentle degree of pressure.
    The "staff" design is fine when it's made of wood ... because bumping a piece of wood against your leg or chest causes no harm ... but replace a length of wood with a bar of lightning hot plasma that literally cuts through flesh like a hot knife through butter, and you end up carving life threatening wounds into yourself with casual contact.
    EVERY time you strike out with one end of the saber staff, you point the opposite end back TOWARD YOURSELF. If you opponent strikes your staff with enough force, he can EASILY knock it hard enough to bump against you ... turning your attack against your enemy into an attack against yourself. Any time you point your own weapon toward yourself, that's a BAD idea!
    ...And don't even get me started on reverse-grip sword fighting! Ugh! The idiocy!

They made eras of Star Wars storytelling their's and it would be weird to see them replaced by others. If Kun's era changes too much in its make-up in the canon continuity, then alright, introduce new characters. I'd be somewhat miffed by that, but I could understand it. I would at least like some references then, though. You gotta pay some respect to Legends.

      They are pretty useless in a universe where laser guns and lightsabers, which are powerful enough to cut through most metals like butter, exist. The very few materials that can resist such power, like Mandalorian iron, for example, were too rare and too expensive to be feasible for constructing lightsaber-resistant shields.

    • @d.dementedengineerc99isurf26
      @d.dementedengineerc99isurf26 Před 4 lety

      Sword with shield is a better tactic than sword alone, so your question is a good one. Actually, Darth Desolus did indeed use a saber/shield combo, as did his disciples. There are a handful of materials that are completely immune to lightsabers and blaster bolts, such as phrik, mandalorian iron/beskar, and cortosis. But even then, making such a shield would be very expensive and time-consuming! If one could actually do it, they should.

    Real reason why there weren't many double-bladed lightsabers: Oops! I have cut myself in half.

  • @thedude2631
    @thedude2631 Před 7 lety +7

    I hate double bladed lightsabers. My reason for it is mostly personal as I have an interest in historical weaponry. A single blade is a concept that makes sense and has historical comparison to real swords. A double bladed lightsaber has no historical comparison and doesn't practically work. Why you ask? It's very simple. Any real martial technique using a pole weapon utilizes reach and full length of the weapon. This requires the wielder to move their grip along the full length of the shaft. If a double bladed lightsaber restricts to user's grip to the center of the weapon, reach is not utilized and therefore the weapon is not practical. If it was practical, there would be double bladed swords throughout medieval history. Outside of a few rare concepts that were never widely used, you will find no comparison.

    • @SinerAthin
      @SinerAthin Před 7 lety +5

      Be careful when comparing swords to lightsabers tho, as there are a few important tidbits to keep into consideration as well :P
      Mainly how Lightsabers don't require much strength or leverage in the swing because of their ludicrous cutting power, and that they are actually very light weapons. All the weight would be in the handle, as opposed to being spread out across the entire weapon.
      This means that certain things that could never work in any practical sense with normal martial weapons might become feasible with lightsaber weapons.

    • @NumbingDisasterAnon
      @NumbingDisasterAnon Před 6 lety +1

      If I can tip my hat in this half-year old thing. What the person above said is true, all the weight is in the hilt and not spread through the blade plus you can cut from any angle because it's pretty much one whole cutting surface.
      But the main purpose of the weapon isn't reach. It's about optimizing attack speed and defense rate in close quarters requiring a specialized combat style and unique mastering of said style. When using a saberstaff, you are going in with the mindset of instinct and quick flurries, not much room for thought and relying on muscle memory as well as the mythical Jedi/Sith abilities of predicting enemy movements.
      Optimally, you'll be letting off a flurry of blows that'll throw off and overpower your opponents before they can even think of a strategy. Attack first and attack fast. But even if you fail to kill your opponent in the first onslaught, you have better defensive capabilities to keep yourself afloat in time for an escape or a means to turn the tide of the battle.

    Two pieces of friendly advice: stop calling your video's 'video exposé', even if technically true it sounds a bit pretentious and gets annoying after watching two videos in a row. Another gripe I have is with how you keep cutting back to the same low resolution crop of your channel thumbnail, it is just not something visually pleasing to look at for more than a few seconds. Other than that, you make some pretty good content, keep it up!

    • @kraziehart95
      @kraziehart95 Před 7 lety +7

      Friendly piece of advice 2.0:
      The repetitiveness of the word exposé tends to get stale, why not use some of its synonyms?
      (revelation, disclosure, exposure, report, feature, piece, column)
      Also, have you ever considered using a higher resolution image of Thrawn? Why the use of the low res image?
      Keep up the good work!

    • @teapuck2530
      @teapuck2530 Před 7 lety +5

      pretty sure his use of expose is just his own preference, i think it's more sophisticated and nicer sounding. as for the image, he probably just really likes the picture. it is his channel after all, there's no real reason for advice if it's his preference and something as irrelevant as a picture or video name.

    • @Marcusjnmc
      @Marcusjnmc Před 7 lety +5

      video expose is his standard intro, it adds uniformity across his videos, & an intro is very standard across many many content creators, the thrawn image Is SWRC/the non canon expert, it represents him and acts as his avatar in this medium, that also is something very common across many content creators, & neither of those things have any reason to change

    • @elmerkado
      @elmerkado Před 7 lety +5

      You know when he stopped saying the word "exposé", many fans of the channel started to make comments starting with "in this video exposé". This is his tag line, it may a tad annoying but it is part of the charm of the channel, and it means we are going to enjoy a good Legends based episode.

    IRL Staff techniques are more than enough. One of the big advantages of polearms is the ability to move in sections and improve your reach. The double-bladed lightsaber limits you to the center portion of the weapon which defeats the purpose.
