A tip to reduce stationery hoarding :
- stop buying packs of pens and markers instead buy loose stock or single pens when you need.
It also saves a lot of money.
(Personally it helped me a lot.)
Btw I'm also going on a No buy!
also, try asking someone to buy for you (using your money of course) so that you don't go to buy a pen refill and end up buying every single stationery item that exists on amazon.
Some time ago i had really bad habit of buying stationery just to own it (i know this sound stupid). I quit that habit and gave the stationery i didn‘t need to my friends and my brother. I now just buy stuff i really want to have and i know i will use and it saves so much money! I recomend putting the things you want to have on a list and let it rest for a while, when come back to it after a week (or so) and if you still want the stuff you can do further planning when and where to get it :) I‘m in for the no buy!
same boat. i used to spend a lot on stationery just to have every limited edition for satisfaction but now i don't buy any stationery since i have enough for tens of years
i do something similar when buying online! i'll put the stuff that interests me in my "cart" but then i'll leave it for a few days to let the excitement of browsing wear off, and then delete all the things that i'm not still excited about getting/know i need

Yes! Having no money helps too. I rarely carry enough money to buy extra things so that has cut down on my useless expenses as well.

I went on a no buy back in 2019, and I was successful for 11 months (kinda gave up in December by buying a few sweaters lol). Even though I didn't complete the challenge, it was the BEST decision I ever made. I learnt so much about handling my money, and now I'm focusing on still using up what I have. I haven't bought stationery in 2 years :)
Since you give sweaters as an example, do you mean a no-buy for everything? like no new clothes, makeup and stationary?

as a old time stationery lover, i have this rule: i don't buy things i already have in a similar product because i can save this money to get another product that is different and more unique, my tip is maybe you really like to buy these things like me and just saves money in other places, but it's just no fun to only buy the same thing, like if you really like pens is just not that fun/interesting to have 50 purple ballpens, when you could have had 50 different pens, so in the end of my long monologue i say if you wanna buy your textsurfers buy it but be smart about it, because money and the world resources are limited, so yeah sorry i talk a lot
@@Faboostic Sometimes it's good to try out a few pens and see which ones you like. For example, if I hadn't bought the zebra sarasa (despite already having pentel energel pens) , I wouldn't have known how good of a pen it was.

I’ve started doing this for 3 months so far and I realized how many pens, Highlighters, and I have so SO SO SO MANY MEMO PADS WHY?! like I had a super bad addiction to buying washi tape and I’m probably set for life. I decluttered so much and I still have a ridiculous amount. I mainly did this because I’ve grown an interest in minimalism and I’ve honestly felt like a stationery hoarder. I’ll cheer you on because sometimes I still get tempted by the cute memo pad designs 🥲 but I look away
Last I knew this was my collection. And I thought I didn't have that much stuff...
100 colored gel pens (give or take a few)

3 packs of sticky tabs I rarely use

Yeah I definitely need to manage my money better. The only thing I constantly use up is regular sticky notes and maybe 2 notebooks a semester.
I don't really have much stationery, but I don't want to accumulate more for this semester. I hope to finish all my stationery (notebooks, papers, pens, etc.) especially since I'm transitioning to digital notes.
On a lighter note, we need more people with a similar mindset as you do in the study community. Thank you so much!
Hey Seo! I love this idea, in the last year I've realized that I own waaaaay too much stationery and even with my 4-5 penpals, bujo, other journals, and schoolwork, there is just nO way I'm going to be using up all of it anytime soon. I had already planned on not buying much this year but this was just that little push I needed to go as **all the way** as I can! This is my final year of uni (yikes) and although I don't plan on stopping journaling, I just don't need to keep buying things because I just like them. This year I plan to only buy things I absolutely need, and that's only if I actually need them. We got this!

Yes, since I started Bullet Journaling my stationery collection expanded extremely! In the beginning I felt like owning certain types of markers (eg. Mildliners or TombowDualtips) was a requirement. I also own so many stickers and washi tapes now. Something I never bought until I started Bullet Journaling. Honestly Seo's amount of markers, etc. didn't really feel that much ...

I've actually been doing this for the most part through my last semester of high school and first of college!! (Minus folders and white out and sticky note refills ) I love stationery and I'm starting to get a lot because of how I'm currently experimenting with works the best for me, so far I found the perfect match of black gel pen for me, color pens I'm still figuring out. Once I know 100 percent what's the best fit for me I'll sticking to these products and avoid buying unnecessary stuff. Its actually been my plan since I joined the community. (Just to be clear I haven't been buying boat loads of stuff XD just a pack of pens or something small because my storage space is limited lol)

I'm in my junior year of high school and I found my favorite black/colored pens (both Pilot Juice 0.38) three years ago and I've never bought another pack of colored pens and only buy the same black refills. I recently figured out I don't use bright colors at all anymore and only pastels. Best of luck with your journey to figure out what works for you! :D

I totally agree about the over consumption of these products (although not judging those who do have a big inventory). Buying cute stationery and supplies is wonderful, but definitely hope that people continue to use up what they have and either sell or share with loved ones!!
I just recently told myself that I need to start using my stash instead of hoarding them . I am also going on a no spend this year - like you, just buying what I need for medical school & if I run out of supplies that I really need . I never thought I had this much stuff either until I recently moved . I think I will be donating 50% of the things I have and try to use up the rest of it . Whatever isn't being used half way into the year , I will end up probably donating them to those who would like them .

Watched this vid 3 years ago when i had very very less collection now going on a no buy lol but surprising thing is that i gave way things that i didn't like but had it coz it looked good or i just wanted to own it i gave it aways to my dad 45% and 20% to my sister that cleared most most of my stationary fr and to use up remaining i have a aim that i gonna finish stationery i already have so that i can get new ones in extreme case i bought pens for example i bought use and throw pens for last year exam coz its necessary and completed all my use and throw ones all in all this no buy gives you a description of what we need

Ouuuu, I love this so much!! I stopped buying excess art supplies when a little before I started university back in 2018 and only bought supplies I either needed for classes and/or knew was going to last me a long time (brushes for watercolour painting).
Before that I bought dozens of disposable multiliners and pens for illustrations and sketches which after all these years I'm finally using up and have switched to or switching to refillable versions of. (Fountain pens of which I only own 2 and a brush pen).
Luckily, my university has a reuse depot where students can drop off materials and supplies that other students might have a use for, so that also helped me reduce all my art supply clutter. (I can't wait until lockdown ends and it opens up again).
Needless to say, not spending carelessly allowed me to save up for important things I wanted to get: drawing tablet, online art courses, animation and manga textbooks books, manga, videogames. And definitely am much happier which my purchases these days because I only buy things I have been waiting to get for months/years.
Yes!!! I am totally going to do this for 2021, it's my last year of high school so I might as well go crazy on my notes with my hundreds of pens and markers before uni :)

I’m happy that last year I only bought things I needed (I bought an iPad Pro but I did have that has my 2020 goal & saved up the money for 2 years~) I decided to do digital notes due to online classes (but I do take in-person classes but I take paper notes). You are right. I don't need more stationary and I do feel bad whenever I kinda still get some. For me, it just holds a special place in my heart. It was something I was bonding over with my grandma, who has passed away. My mum never understood our obsecion with stationary so it was just something me and my grandma did. So it reminds me of her.
Another part of it was to fulfill my childhood dreams of having certain things we couldn't afford when I was younger.
Anyway. I really have everything I ever wanted and dreamed of, so I should stop buying some. I will wait for some things that I've ordered to arrive and that will be it. We will see how long I can make it. lol. One thing I will get later in the year however is probably some aquarell paints since I always wanted to get into that :)

i'm also going on a no-buy for stationery and other nonessentials this year!! i already have all i need anyways (partly thanks to winning one of your charity giveaways - i can't thank you enough!!) but i'd still like to reduce environmental waste and save money. a tip i have for anyone who is considering going on a no-buy is to keep track of the stuff you buy and how much you spent on it - this really helped me notice my spending habits and identify the stuff i spent too much on!
Pens are my problem! I was learning brush calligraphy so I invested on brush pens. They were good investments since it’s now my new hobby 🥰 Thankfully, you can buy individual pens instead of sets. If I bought a set of tombows before realizing they’re not a good fit for me, I would’ve wasted a lot of money! Now I have a bunch of black brush pens from diff brands, but black pens are always useful so it’s fine. I love the pentel fude touch tho so I bought the original set, but I want the 2020 colors 😖😖😖 I was so tempted to buy them last year, but I didn’t! Don’t know if I can last another year tho 😅 Aside from that, yes to stationery no buy 2021! 💖

Tracking what you pay is really quite good. Lots of people go "oh its just £5" ....but that adds up over time. Trying to save money when you purchase something and trying to use what you have is really important
When I first watched this video shortly after release, I low-key scoffed LOL. And here I am, in 2023, committing to a no-buy for multiple reasons. A lot of it is that I didn't really use my stationery in the last half year, but I didn't really slow down in my spending habits. In fact, I may have spent MORE on stationery this year than I did last year. I think that a lot of this increase came from a place of desperation for inspiration... I hoped with each purchase that I'd be lured into journaling regularly again.
Anyhow, for this first half of the year until I visit Japan in June, I will not buy ANY new stationery unless it is a necessary replacement or a particularly special souvenir from traveling. This is the first video I remembered to get inspiration!!

i used to buy quite a lot of washi tapes and maybe a couple of brush pens but without realizing, i actually went on a stationery no buy for 2 years (woah 😳) (and maybe for more years to come) and looking back at it now, it was definitely worth it bc 1) i don’t journal as much as before; 2) the only thing i ever ran out of was my black brush pen 😂

I will try my best to do the no buy!! buuuuut idk how long i'll be able to last because unfortunately new stationary has been a huge coping mechanism for my ADHD (especially during this pandemic) so i may end up caving :( also we love that adhd impulsivity...rip lol
BUT at the end of the day i think being more aware of my stationary buying habits/wasteful spending has (and hopefully will continue to) helped me decrease it a lot, even if i can't cut it out completely

Im on a stationary no-buy as well (except for college blocks, because I consistently use them up and don't have a lot laying around, and I'll buy a new planner sometime next year because I have stuck to the type for years). I'd probably beat you in pens, because my main issue is: I used to do lots of art in highschool, but since going to university I don't have the time, yet I still have a lot of coloured pencils, fineliners, erasers and more pencils than I can use up in a lifetime. I hope to make a dent into my fineliners this year, and I started using pencils for all notes that don't need to be permanent so (like to-do/shopping lists, reminders, first drafts), so I can at least get rid of the small pencils.
The other thing is: I am a cheapskate and I often have opportunities to get (used) stuff for free. Like when my grandpa moved, I was able to take 8 yellow highlighters. A neighbour moved, and I got a whole-ass filled pencil case for free.
My goal is, that when I graduate in 2022, I can fit all my remaining stationary and art-supplies into one box and that I used up (at least most) of my notebooks.
So after this whole ass vent no-one asked for: I think you are a positive influence on the study community, especially with this approach, and you are not alone in this!

I didn't have money to buy (jobless highschooler) but I would always feel bad about not having stuff and want different stationery. I do appreciate the few products that I have as gifts or that my mom graciously funded, but ever since I ended up with an iPad (gift) it feels like a lot, so I will definitely be participating! I love that you and this community are recognizing this and it makes me feel a lot better about the emotions I felt at the time!

I recently got into journaling so my stationery collection has grown exponentially. Luckily I caught it early on and my condition is that I can't have more stationery then what fits in my storage container. If my storage container is full then I can't buy anymore until I make space by using what I have. My contained is very close to being full and I know I have some more orders on the way so that's it for 2021!

I feel this! Definitely going on a stationary no buy for this year too. Colorful pens, stickers, and washi tape always tempt me, but moving back home has made me try to use what I already have, especially old but very usable supplies like crayola markers, colored pencils, and even crayons! Let’s suffer together, but I think it’ll end up making us able to live with less, and less is more :)

I literally just received an Amazon package of stationery items 😅 I have to stop buying so many pens
I used to have a lot of stationeries just for the sake of it too. We don’t have enough cute things in my country, but that didn’t stop me from buying the things that existed. But after a while, my collection increased but I didn’t use those and I started to feel so bad for wasting money and I stopped buying things other than ones I either needed or _really_ wanted (stuff that don’t leave your mind at all). Now, although I still am a stationery addict, it just exists my google and Pinterest now. As in, I still look at toms of cute supplies in google and Pinterest and I want them but by the next day, my rational thoughts kick in and I don’t want them anymore.
