I have a korg kronos which is more difficult to program but with practice you get used to it and you can do anything with it. But the fantom series is great.

    I've had my Fantom 06 for a week now and so far I am delighted with it. I part ex'd by FA-06 which always left me a little underwhelmed sonically. Not so with the Fantom 0. It is everything I thought the FA was going to be. Fantastic sounds and functionality. Its going to take me some time to get my head around it all, but its going to be fun doing so!

    • @Jason75913

      FA disappoints while the Fantom-0 pleases despite the Fantom-0 having the same rehashed JV1080/XV5080 sounds for the millionth time?

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Před 2 lety +1

      @@fourthtunz Possible, but the difference from D/A change that is fairly subtle.
      Roland isn't into making all-new sounds (they should but they won't), Zen-Core still uses the same JV1080 and XV5080 patches as the FA and Juno-DS, even though Zen-Core is a little bit more capable sound engine. I have an MC-707, so I know well, and I can audition the bigger Fantom locally if I feel like it, which just offers more of the same just with more bells and whistles.
      Carl Rose is just wow'd by the touchscreen, Fantom-0's overall functionality differs from FA mostly in the sequencer and Ableton integration. They are fairly samey otherwise if you compare their manuals. _Hopefully_ , Roland bothered to update the main acoustic piano patches with better samples for the Fantom-0, but that is unlikely.
      For anyone to truly benefit from Zen-Core, you have to get into sound design and create your own patches different from all the '90s stuff that Roland throws in. Zen-Core is very capable of modern sounds, but you are on your own setting that up, Roland won't do it for you. Now take into account that most people buying Fantoms and other Roland keyboards _aren't_ into sound design, so they're unable to actually benefit from Zen-Core. At least the Zenology Pro VST is where people will be more likely to make modern sounds for themselves.

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith Před rokem

      FA is in some semblance superior; depending on your feature requirement. Sonically you'll have a range of complaints about SN on the Fantom; where even on CZcams comparisons, for those who like them, you'll hear that FA/Fantom aren't all that different in many performances and in some cases FA jumps ahead. Is it an upgrade? Depends on what features best suit you. You are losing things from moving from the FA. Fantom-0 has the most horrendous sequencer that I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. No beam (Sad) and the resonance on SN and in many ways the whole device, projects a much thicker and nuanced live sound. To truly make the most of ZC technology - I'd go for the flagship or a modular approach as with the comment above mine.

      It's rather the opposite. A straight to the point live board praised for it's immediacy and focus. Lending it to be one of the most successful stage/gigging boards in our history. Zencore is convoluted comparatively (similar to modx you won't need it all on the fly). As such you're hampered a lot (engine) by it's lower price. I've always held that the best place for the ZC architecture is in the studio (for a workstation type). Modular or specific devices (like Juno) are a different case entirely.

    • @longandmcquade
      @longandmcquade  Před 2 lety +3

      DAW = Digital Audio Workstation, essentially your computer's recording software. This could be Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton, Logic, Garageband, Reaper, Studio One, etc...
      VST = Virtual Studio Technology, which are third-party bits of software (sometimes called plugins) that run within your DAW (or sometimes can be run standalone). VST is just one of the types of plugins available, and VST was developed by Steinberg. Others include AU (Apple), AAX (Avid), etc. Although, "VST" has somewhat become synonymous with what used to be called VSTi, or virtual instruments. So in this context, Todd is speaking mostly about other virtual instrument plugins that the FAMTOM-0 can control.

    Can you hear the already recorded sample pad audio while recording a new sample pad audio in the sequencer (by triggering)? Or playing more than 4 stereo (or 8 mono) sample pad audio in the sequencer at once? This was one of the annoying limitations in FA series workstations. Lot of FA owners are waiting for the answer before they sell their FA and buy Fantom-O series as manual didn't elaborate on these issues. Although not clear who would buy secondhand old FA06 (Still selling new 2,249 CAD at Long & McQuade) when they can buy the new Fantom-O6 for 2,099 CAD!

    Do the zen core sounds sound like the Roland cloud vst sounds?
    I had an xp50 that had jv1080 sound engine but the roland cloud jv1080 vst was so thin sounding compared to the xp50.
    Are Fantom O sounds like a vst?

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Před 2 lety

      It is unlikely to match the VST sound due to the hardware adding a bit of its own distortion and noise, plus the DAC will contribute to the sound slightly, all stuff missing inside of the VST.
      That aside, does the thinness matter at all once the VST sounds are fitted into the mix? I highly doubt it does. Running the VSTs' sound through hardware like Soundcraft MTK mixers should help add "mojo" and fullness to the sound, too.

    Personally i love my FA 08 and have got used to the studio set and tones architecture. Cant really justify buying this Fantom when the FA 08 is so good and still has loads of features yet to be discovered by myself. Love new Roland gear, but cant see much point in buying this machine. If you are new to Roland synthesizers, then maybe this would be a good start, if you are worried about budget, the FA 06-07-08 is a really good alternative..

      Juno-DS is the lower-budget option from Roland, though with many, many more limitations. The Korg Kross2 is much more like a "mini-FA/Fantom-0". Keybed's not as good, though.

      Older FA has better pianos than the Zen-Core pianos, Fantom-0 has all of the FA's other sounds, FA has the better sequencer, just so you know that a very close alternative is about with different strengths and may be going at a reduced prive in your country ;)

      @@OptimaMrL As in transmit audio over USB? Juno-DS, FA, RD-88, and Fantom-0 are all compatible and portable. The Juno can run on 8 AA batteries for convenience. The bigger Fantom (not Fantom-0), is also compatible, but it is huge and heavy and has a lot more features and Eurorack compatibility, be sure not to get confused.
      Yamaha MODX and MOXF are also compatible. They all rock, just decide on the features that you want, and if you are picky about keybeds, FA-08 has the best of all of these followed by the Juno-DS88. I think 61-key is best for portability, but if you must have more, there are 76-key and 88-key versions of all of these keyboards, but RD-88 only comes in one 88-key form, and there are only 61 and 88 key forms for MOXF. RD-88 also has the best piano sounds of all of these, but extra features are far more limited versus the rest, it is a simpler, higher quality instrument, then MODX comes next in best pianos then MOXF. FA and Juno-DS can load the free Roland Axial expansions, and EXP-04 has a piano preset better than anything either keyboard normally comes with. You can count on all of these I've mentioned to be overkill on stage in any event, so pick your features first, then sound(s), I say. Junos will be the lightest in weight.
      No one knows if the Fantom-0 series will get the same keybeds as the FA series, we will probably start seeing feedback about their usage in June.

    Incredible workstation for the price(best option hands down, in this price range....but if Roland Fantom-0 users are limited to just 2 PC DAW options,the least Roland can do, is to include a lite version of these DAW's.
