Will I have to go back to gas power?
Or spend 6k to get Ryobi new 80 volt lithium I drive?
Is electric better than gas riding lawn mowers?

Ego only mowed .75 of acre then basically died. blade would not turn at 4%
The Ryobi could do almost full acre (my yard plus my neighbors yard and still have 15 to 20% life left) - Sport

Great comparison. Just fyi for anyone wondering this is the old type Ryobi zero turn with lead acid batteries which are terrible. The new Ryobi 80v lithium ion zero turn line was just released and it looks very promising!
The old Ryobi models with the lead acid batteries will cut less lawn each year on a single charge. Saw a video about it, and the gentleman said that if you have a big yard, your lead acid batteries will routinely be pushed to below 50% capacity. That is going to cause your batteries to wear down faster, and unless you replace them, you'll cut less and have to recharge in the middle of mowing.

The key to EV and mower survival is a well engineered battery management system. This is how my 2015 Tesla lost only 6mi of range after 8 years. Ego seems to have mastered this well, I am now on my third year with all their yard tools, now trading my 25yo Kubota for one of these, since global warming made snow a rarity in my neck of the woods. So excited to master the ZTR game.

Hopped around in the video, apologies if I didn't get the right message. But front wheel "traction" is not very important for these. All drive and steer is in the rear.
Update: Home Depot refunded our money on the Ryobi and told us we could keep it, since they were slacking on picking it up. That was fine with us. The kids took the mower deck off, and now use it as a go kart.
I work on both models. Ego is much easier. Changing out the batteries on the Ryobi is a nightmare. Where as on the ego you just pull them out and put new ones in. Ryobi deck is easier to remove. Big difference is you can diagnose the ego with your computer Bluetooth’s and synchro the handles and motors. Not with Ryobi. If your battery goes low on ego, you can get a quick charge or use another battery from another ego product. Not on the Ryobi. You have to go plug in.
I would be curious to know what was smooking on the Ryobi! Based on where you said the smoke was coming from. it sounds like a wire to the motor shorted out. Even with the lead acid batteries I think the Ryobi is a better built mower. If the batteries fail you can switch to lithiums for probably less then the cost of the lead acid's because you wouldn't need the high amp hour. The ego's have had issues with the fancy LCD and when it fails the mover is a paper weight. The batteries are also not cheap when they fail at about $600 a pop if you can even find them instock anywhere. The wish Ryobi didn't switch to that joystick, or at least gave folks an option plus the large price jump will keep folks from buying it in my opinion.
Yeah I think it was the motor as the blades no longer turn on. I couldn’t physically see anything burnt but it definitely had a distinct electrical smell. Called Home Depot and they couldn’t tell me anything. I’ve read other people had the same problem. I’ve also read about the ego LCD screen and so now I don’t know what to do… Don’t really want to pony up 6k for the ryobi 80v but might be my best bet.
Btw, I saw the new 80v Ryobi mowers in Home Depot this weekend. They are all $1,000 more than the original price given when they were first introduced. They were supposed to be in stores in April, but then there was a delay. So, the 30 inch model is $5K, 42 inch is $6K, and the 54 inch is $7K. I get they're better for the environment and no gas, oil, or maintenance, but I am not sure over the life of the machine that you would recoup enough savings over a gas mower to justify that huge price tag. The best Husqvarna 54 inch model (TS354XD) is only $4600 at Rural King, and it has a 24 hp Kawasaki engine (very reliable) and a locking differential for hills. The lithium ion batteries will also degrade from year to year, and they will be far more expensive to replace than most maintenance costs associated with a gas riding mower. At that steep price, I still have to lean towards a gas riding mower. It's a much better value.

What about the time it’ll take one to get gas or oil and then the time it’ll take someone to take a gas mower to the shop and then the cost of repairs/maintenance/supplies/etc? Electric will be easier to repair if a battery goes out you just go grab another one. I don’t know maybe gas is better. Not sure. Would love to see a long term cost analysis….
The wheel motors are $1000 ea. Blade motors $700 ea.
You'll want to update the Ego's firmware. That should correct the "glitch" you had when it died on you and it may improve the battery life.

I have a Ryobi 48v 54 deck ...died on me in a year. I called ryobi and they still have not fixed it and it been over a month. Apparently my charging port went bad and they don't have them...HD is supposed to come pick it up and refund me back my cash. I did notice my batteries were going bad prior to it dying. No clue what I will buy now..i don't want a gas one bc I donr want the maintenance
The Ryobi has led acid batteries. (very old technology) takes full day to charge. The Ego has lithium batteries, that's what you have in ipads etc. Much faster charging, and you can charge them thousands of times without any significant power reduction.
We just bought 42 with joystick yesterday.
We can't understand what's wrong with it , but it works only 20 minutes (((

the ego cuts off the mowing at 25-30% to make sure you can drive it back to your garage

I see this all the time, it's not the mower that cuts the grass it is only the vehicle it's the blades that do the cutting. You want to do a review that no one else has done gets some Kavli Beast blades or Finisha blades for either of those mowers then watch the difference. The real difference is with tall grass.
Don't buy ryobi riding mowers ,you will regret it
Don't store these in an attached garage or an electric car for that matter these lithium batteries sometimes like to just randomly burst into flames buyer beware
BS. Your gas can catch on fire too. I’ve had 3 Evs in my garage since 2014 and my house hasn’t burnt down yet.
I’ve had a Ryobi rider and an Ego push mower and snow blower for 3 years too.
I have ZERO problems with the electric products. My gas cars and equipment had issues constantly.
