I saw the film "Annihilation" and it was really crazy, but I liked it. After the film I found out there was a book about it and now it's on my reading wish list.
Loved Annihilation!!! If you end up liking it and havent read anything else by Jeff VanderMeer, I would HIGHLY recommend his earlier and lesser known Ambergris trilogy, which is a weird fiction/cosmic horror fantasy series focusing on a city populated by sentient fungus. Which probably sounds pretty goofy up front, but the first shory story in the first book is one of the best pieces of horror I've read this entire year. The Vorrh by Brian Catling is also very similar to Jeff VanderMeer's stuff, not as good imo but it's fun if you like weird fiction/surreal horror
I'm new to your channel and just wanted to say I'm addicted! Thanks for all the recommendations. My husband is not a big reader so I read to him every night before bed. He does much better following along with books that have been made into movies. Annihilation (and The Mist) will be next on our list!
I have a few Stephen Kings that i still have to read, the one that i'm more excited is Needful Things. Besides that i'm waiting for Dead Inside that must be here for Halloween, i hope.
@@AndaKent When I spoke to Kurt Vonnegut I quizzed him about a novel entitled "Venus On The Half Shell" allegedly written by one Kilgore Trout (a thinly disguised fictional alter-ego of Vonnegut's who crops up in many of his books). Turns out it was actually written by Jose Philip Farmer, a close friend of Vonneguts. The book even contains a fake biography of Kilgore Trout..."born in 1907 in Bermuda!" Well worth tracking down a copy if you get the chance. Best wishes and thanks again. P.S. Kilgore Trout was named in homage to another close friend of Vonnegut's, sci-fi author Theodore Sturgeon (spot the fishy connection!)
I would love your impressions on the Bill Hodges trilogy (and subsequent solo Holly G. tomes). King has done a wonderful job of bringing Holly out of her shell and turning her into a protagonist that is easy to connect with and care about.
I just got Paperbacks from Hell as well! 😍 And Let’s Go Play at the Adams has been on my TBR for a while! Hopefully you’ll do a review on that one, so I know whether I should grab it or not. 😄
I really love the Southern Reach books. Some people find them too abstract but based on some of the other things you like I think you might be into them. I’ll be interested if you so a video on Annihilation or the trilogy
After reading The Girl Next Door (Ketchum), I'm anxious about reading Let's Go Play at the Adam's, its another "inspired" by Sylvia Likens case. But yes, there are so many Paperbacks from Hell now. I enjoyed When Darkness Loves Us by Elizabeth Engstrom and still have Lisa Tuttle to read.
The Only One Left was SO good, I'm glad you got it! I don't usually like gothics, but I really enjoyed this one. Generally though I'll agree with the consensus that it's almost TOO twisty.
Annihilation is a great read of the new weird genre, the film is amazing but is quite a departure from the book, it does manage to capture the atmosphere of the book very well. And the musical score to the movie is haunting.
I had to try Let's Go Play at the Adams' after seeing it in Paperbacks From Hell, too! It wasn't really my thing, but I can't say that it didn't scare me.
As a big sci-fi reader, I didn’t really care for the Southern Reach Trilogy. It was written well, but kinda predictable. I don’t think it needed 3 books.
could we see what all books you hold in your kindle ? also suggest some life hacks in kindle. somewhere I read like, if I have KU and have 100s of books, and we never go back online and always remain in flight mode, I can cancel my KU subscription and finish my 100 books in like 2-3 years. is this for real ?
Not a fan of the Mr Mercedes series myself, but I'd still watch the video. Annihilation is one of my favorites. The movie is very different and I recommend both. Each book in the series is unique and all dip into Vandermeer's "weird fiction" tastes. Personal opinion, LaRocca has some excellent stories but they are all too often mixed with the mediocre. They're quite talented at times, but some choices in respect to storytelling could be better done with a more experienced author. Whatever the case, they seem to be getting better with age and I genuinely look forward to the evolution of their craft.
I go to my used bookstore for older books but if I want anything new, Barnes and Noble is the only bookstore around me. I also like physically shopping for books and not just ordering them online.
loved annihilation--the book and the film (i even did a podcast breaking down the film one minute at a time). the trilogy is very strange, with plenty of horror elements in addition to the science fiction aspects.
