we are approaching the time where Rob starts learning about aerodynamics, get ready
When's he getting an air tunnel?
not ready for that
Can’t wait because then he can teach the rest of us mortals
I can't fucking wait, I get super nerdy learning about aero
My body is ready.
Rob I noticed at the end of the straight you’d shift into neutral and roll for a bit before trying to put it back into gear. You should try and either shifting to 6th then braking and downshifting all the way to 4th or if you don’t want to use 6th before the corner staying in 5th while braking and downshift to 4th for the corner. Keeping the car in gear is essential to not upsetting it while cornering as well as it being a little dangerous to roll around a racetrack in neutral as you don’t have the ability to quickly use the throttle.
Liked for visibility. It's fine enough on the street, but when pushing the car and having fast cars possibly around, it's a dangerous habit.
Rotary engines do not appreciate engine braking, they develop a lot of wear very quickly while doing so, his habit is so he can see what the actual abuse is on the engine, not just poor technique
@@austinhah It's not a problem at all when you use fuel injection on decel which is what i assume rob would be doing as well. You're injecting the same amount of oil into the ports, as well as getting fuel dumped into the housings.
If you run with fuel cut on decel, then sure, engine breaking isnt healthy in the long run.
@@Ayane13b And this advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.
@@austinhah It's poor technique. Just rebuild more often and drive the correct way. You can be damn sure the drivers in the 787B at Le Mans weren't coasting into corners.
Y’know with all the work on the 4-rotor, you kind of forget how insane the 3-rotor still is sometimes
If you put two absolutely bespoke cars next to eachother but one is built off of a legacy and the other is built for fun, the one with the legacy will strike a stronger chord with people. The 4 rotor has the le mans history, the 'street car' pride, plus the awd manual puts all that history, emotion and genius to the ground in the most over the top way possible. Within context yes the 3 rotor can be just as insane as the 4 rotor, but it really is a seperate ballpark.
It's an absolute freight train!
@@zippityzbrake well, it's a sequential transmission so not really manual
3 rotor is my favorite dude
At the 30 second mark, I couldn't help but notice Isaiah strangling himself with a scarf while wearing orange crocs. Classic Isaiah.
Are you a relative of Rob's?
oh dahm
@@kugelblitz1557 Nah not related. I'm just a really big fan and his younger brother. 😛
Rob you need to learn how to hoon the 4 rotor and make a dedication video for your inspiration for it. That man will be missed by an unfathomable amount of people. He inspired a generation and will continue to do so.
BURN EM FOR BLOCK
Rob ive been feening for your videos like an addict in withdraws and ill say this scratches the itch. I have absolutely loved watching your content over the past who knows how many years and i cant seem to get enough. Im so happy that your getting comfortable and dialing in the cars
Man.... Been waiting what feels like ages for a new Rob Dahm video... Today is a great day.
If you wanted more effect out of the front splitter, you would make it turn upwards from the front edge. This way floor, diffuser and splitter create whole effective wing profile. And also it helps with ground clearance. Clarence.
Roger, Roger.
Interesting, that would explain why the Amemiya splitter is curved upwards. I always wondered.
Huh? What's our vector, victor?
@@ratataran Indeed, is it W8 or M12?
Have you guys ever experimented with vacuum pumps? I used a Ford Cobra smog pump to pull a consistent 2-3" of vacuum on the crankcase and while I never really needed it, it did work. Could help with crankcase ventilation I'm not too sure how it works with rotary.
Could even take it a step further with your fab skills and make a separate little sump to pull foamy oil into and allow it to settle. Like a half dry/wet sump lol
Only got as far as 18 mins so far but wanted to let you know that we use a cable tie on the shock piston to see how far the spring compresses during use. Maybe you’ll say that in a bit. Love the content though - keep it coming Rob
Also - on track days experiment with sub-optimal lines I.e. try following at the same or higher speeds on the outside line or on inside line
Same on the fork tubes on bikes
Definitely useful in bound and rebound characteristics
Ah yes, the zip tie trick. Great advise. We always carry a pack to every track day and even help others get dialed.
Rob's the type of guy to go straight to suspension potentiometers though.
@@mikexkennedy I did think of that but seeing is believing and sometimes understanding what the data from potentiometers means in mechanical terms is a helpful learning tool
I really enjoy the mix in your videos of high end meeting low end.
Youre working on an indycar with a harbor freight hydraulic table, towing the FD with a uhaul trailer, its a really cool blend of spending money where it matters and being budget friendly where it doesnt.
Glad to see you on track and having fun! Please work on breaking the neutral drop habit. You are going faster and faster and not in a straight line anymore. as you found out, its damn near impossible to get it back into gear and it upsets the car going into the corner. A side note as well, when the car is traveling and the gear box is in neutral, the oil is not moving around like it normally would. Bearings could be running dry and working overtime. Keep having fun and working on that driver skill!
Your honesty and clarity all through your builds Is what keeps people subscribing and watching the shows, so keep the warts and all footage and keep owning your mistakes and we will keep watching and sharing your channel with our friends.
👆👆ᴄᴏɴɢʀᴀᴛꜱ👏 ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴏɴ ᴅᴍ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ꜰᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴘʀɪᴢᴇ❤
Love your passion for versatility with the builds
You'd really benefit from doing some instructed track days with a spec miata or equivalent
You should enter drag week with the 4 rotor, prove you can get it through scrutineering and keep it running a week.
Watching Rob learn all these different things about cars makes me think that at one point, he will become auto-god. He will have learned everything from all the best people. Then, probably, there'll be an iteration of the 4 rotor that is the ultimate RX7 lol
II skipped to a random spot in the first 1/4th of the video and its Rob saying while holding a rubber O thingy, "Its not for your home made flesh light". And that's why I LOVE this channel.
The 3 rotor with the wing looks so good omg
Man I’ve been starting 2023 learning everything I can about the 13b. I’ve always loved your content but I’m Re watching everything with a fresh new perspective. 🙏🙌🔥
You've got your work cut out then! Enjoy from the start and watch the grow!
I have a Rob Dahm signed four rotor shirt from the Dyno video and I wear it to work at my shop regularly. I can't wait for the new merch drop!
Wow Rob is working on suspension…what a shock.
I love the 3 rotor. what a machine to behold
It's insane how hard it pulls, Rob shifted to 5th and it accelerates like it's in 3rd. This car needs so much aero to realize it's potential on track. So awesome that Rob decided to turn it to a proper track car from just a drag car.
Wow that perfect harmony at 53:10 caught me off guard!
This car is a BEAST, Rob!
I love seeing the cars out on the track finally!
Lol "Joel won" at the end got me 😂😂
The amount of data and knowledge you got from that track day has got to be wonderful and invaluable
Love these videos a huge inspiration.
Also love Rob explaining everything with the suspension and the weight transfer when turning then it cuts to Isaiah just saying "so this is a piece of metal"
This is for sure, without doubt or question one of the top 5 videos of this channel regarding sharing knowledge. Is just awesome the easiness Rob and his coworker have to explain everything, even the little details which are the most complicated to share in simple words.
Thanks for sharing.
I love the fact that Isaiah is doing fab work in Crocs 🤣🤣🤘
It’s a shame I can only give you one thumbs up! Love the content
It's so great to see all of the body panels in place, the car looks and sounds great! Driving will come, awesome build.
Love seeing the car used out on track. There's no better feeling. That Trans needs a rebuild tho. Hopefully the next merchant drop helps that too.
Congratulations on getting to where you have gotten and I admire and respect your hard work and dedication to get there. I have absolutely zero doubt you will be one of the greatest drivers on any track with your work ethic putting you there. Much love and respect.
this has been the coolest most wholesome video ive seen out of rob in a while. not counting all the "building" videos
I cant wait for Rob to have confidence in his driving. These cars are gonna EAT!! and sound dahm beastly once that happens
The sounds this car makes are so orgasmic, I fucking love it!!!!!
The vibes are ✨IMMACULATE✨
Good ol hockey pucks. Got a few of them replacing sub frame bushings on a bonneville.
Engine mounts for me. Chef's kiss, and they're cheap to replace once they chew out.
So many channels 3/4 build cars, you never see them again and never see them driven. This is NOT one of those channels, happy 2023 fellas 🤙
Love the long video, especially very last moment.
I've never been excited about a track day, be it motorcycle or car, until now. Weird, but true. However, this video to me is like watching someone else's baby walk their first steps. 😁
This is the best video you have with the 1st dyno of the 4 rotor! Thanks for this content i can almost feel the power of the 3 rotor watching it
Funny when we were building the 13B BRZ recently I lost all fuel pressure and I thought oh crap the pump I just installed died and after some checks I decided to pull the whole pump assembly back out. You can guess the problem. I was out of gas. Fun stuff, Rob!
I love seeing these things out there doing what they are meant to do!!! Keep it up.
loved having more mr. camera in this vid! awesome vid as always
I love seeing the track videos like this. I just wish I was on track too. Some day you should host a dahm driving day and have spectators and a driver entry list with semi experienced drivers
Me only just realising that Rob and Ken can't do a rematch😥. I hope when everyone has grieved we can see the 2 beast's battle, it may be different drivers but I think Ken would approve.
Great video Rob & Isaiah, thank you!
So good to see those cars on track and hauling ass!
Am massively anticipating the incremental improvements both in tweaking the car and tweaking the driver to suit, because I know we'll learn so much!
Holy sh!t Rob! That car is FAST! The thing sounds so clean and just breathing. I swear I saw like 144mph at one point. Just an incredible machine. I'm a firm believer that you and Isiah are building some top-tier cars. I'd love to ride in that 3 rotor with you bro ^^^^^^^^^
Joel snuck that one right in the end 😂😂😂, great to see the car on track running so well, sounding sick on those gear changes, dang 🤯🔥💥
27:54 “THIS PUPPY CAN GO 4 MILES!!!”
I don’t watch videos that are 1 hour long in the car community….except Rob’s. And no other person in the car community, once 1 hour has passed, I wished it was 1 hour longer.
Everyone: Rotaries are not reliable
Dahm's Rotaries: Hold my Valvoline bottle
Holy cow that thing is a monster so much turn in grip you need to let it arc out, especially the last turn at that cone you should be full throttle there’s probably an additional 3s in that car. More track time and leave it as is, that thing is a great track car, perfect amount of HP and grip
Videos like this remind me how grateful i am for Rob. He's one of the only creators that does detailed build content AND proper road course driving. Thanks Rob 👍
What a freaking beast that car has become, I love these videos that showcase the amount of ingenuity and perseverance you two put into your cars
What I love is it's almost like he is showing that he can out build himself. I feel like the three rotor is gaining more love than the four rotor and it may almost perform better as far as track biases
Car sounds amazing Rob! Congrats on getting this thing to where your at today. You are a huge inspiration to me, I can't wait to get out there as well and learn too. Keep up the amazing work!
Lotta time left on the table in those laps too Rob! Keep Livin the Dream Duder!
This 3 rotor is an all rounder. Drag, half mile now circuit. The ending with the fc was cool.
That fd is scary fast. He was really easy on her through the turns and still maintained great corner speed 👏🏾
All I got to say is people that know how to wrench on what they drive I have 1000 times more respect for you then the dude with money spilling out his ass with a full race crew. Keep it going rob!
Couple of things you may want to do.
1) Mark your tire sidewalls with a grease pen or chalk and take note of tire pressures. Try to take pressure readings as quick as possible when you pit. Knowing the cold and hot readings for each tire will be helpful for suspension and alignment tuning. The tire mark will tell you if your pressures are sufficient to prevent the sidewalls from rolling over too much in corners.
2) I noticed you kept on reaching around or through your steering wheel to "clear" error codes on your digital dash. Put a small button on the steering wheel or somewhere more accessible. I noticed every time you cleared codes, you diminished your focus away too long from the track and other drivers.
3) A good driving aid would be to install an AIM solo for data collection if your digital dash is not equipped. That device helped me a lot to be a smoother, faster, and more consistent driver. Overlapping GPS data from multiple laps will help you visually see where you can improve and can compare with other drivers. Since its battery powered, Its easy to just swap out and put in another vehicle and record. A friend of mine had one and we all used it to compare our lap data. It was a lot of fun.. We always find one who is a good bull-crapper about lap times. The AIM will quickly identify that person. LOL..
4) Don't over think stuff when out on the track. I fell into that trap trying to memorize where I could improve my times. Just focus on one or two corners where you have sufficient track runoff if you make a big mistake. Find and take mental note of physical markers on the track at the start of your brake zone so you can measure your braking spot. I find it easier to keep your corner entry speed the same, keep on braking deeper and deeper until you start hitting your driving limits. Once you have a better understanding on the limits of you and the car, at that velocity, increase entry speed and back off how deep you start braking. Rinse and repeat on all corners....
5) Don't blindly follow other peoples race lines on the track (unless you know they are better than you and with similar car setup). I used to think if they could pass me they have a better race line than me. Nope. It is easy in your mind to follow traffic. Don't. Stick to your guns and focus on what your car is doing. As you learn, you will realize that sometimes following other peoples lines can actually make you slower, not faster... Your performance advantage/disadvantage/skill may not match theirs...
Remember, to finish first, first you must finish :)
BTW, if you want a really fun track you should come out to Road America in Wisconsin. If you decide to go please let the You-Tubers know. The Northwoods Shelby Cobra club is an excellent organization to attend for this track. Hope to see you there......
Btw I’m happy that it was just a fuse Rob and not the motor coz I was feeling for you bro PS I love your content and the way you explain things..
So cool to see you actually driving your cars now congrats 👍
The progressively missing shards of the side view mirror and the gear console trim kicking around every time he shifted me me chuckle
Thanks again for sharing
Epic rolling shots
Finally some more content! Awesome.
Love the track footage 👌🏾
The shifter surround popping off reminds me so much of my own FD.... except I don't actually have a shifter surround. Instead, my 3D printed gauge surround used to keep popping out until I secured it in place with a handful of wood screws.
nice love actually seeing some driving!
I love how good the 3 rotor has got man! Love that ur driving has improved as well, ever considered letting a pro driver push your babies to the limit. Would be cool to see how the cars perform on the track at the limit.
"I just celebrated my 39th birthday" *Me in kevin harts voice* DAMN. All love to you and the 4rotor crew! keep grinding fellas. Been here for a while and will continue to back yall!
Rob I love how grass roots and do-it-yourself you are, but please get a new trailer 😂 maybe a run of t-shirts for an enclosed trailer.
Stoked to see what y'all do in 2023!
Although I don't use Keeps I use something with the exact same ingredient list. It works and has made an immense difference. It took about 4 months to see a result but the result is very obvious. I get random comments about the thickness of my hair by people who knew me before I used the product.
If you are starting to notice thinning hair / balding - start now. It won't regrow hair but it'll make the existing hair thicker, stronger and prevent it from falling out.
so many people underestimate what way bars can do, you can have really good coil overs but without really good sways bars, man its not even comparable
I love the self clearance sounds
Livin the dream...thank you for sharing
I still dream of building my own FD, but until then I'll keep living vicariously through Robs' vids
It's so cool seeing the 1 million Subs under the video I remember when he had less than 500,000
Digging the cat toe bean prints on the windscreen when behind Joel at about 45mins
"it's not for your homemade fleshlight" lmfao rob
The Optima battery was a Johnson Control made product until the Clarios LLC took over in 2019. On a different note, when you took the lead for that lap and shifted to 5th, I was hoping to see you pull away even in the traffic and put up a NPB.
54:45 true winner
Dang it, Dahm! You did the money shift into 5th gear with no oil preasure! You need a windage plate or baffles in the oil and fuel tanks. Oh, you ran out of fuel? It's prime time! The biggest problem with the car is the Nut behind the steering wheel! 😂🤣😅🤣😂!!!
It sounds amazing and the pops 🔥🔥🔥
absolutely gorgeous
Sick FC out there too
Fun day @ the track 🏁
OMG at 53 minutes that roller was SO SWEET!
Daaang! Spicy right there!
I love those 1 hour videos!
That was a fun day, I got the first track day of the year sorted on a track I knew, I got to do it with my 86 buddies, I got to meet you, and got to see this monstrosity in person. Even with the mics you have, it just doesn't do that loud bang justice. It's a LOT louder in person. I was wondering how I didn't really see you in red group, your time answered my question, they probably bumped you up to pink.
3:22 is that a cat door!!!? What a cat dad😂😂🥲
I know I'm in late and my comment is likely to be lost in the others, but I hope Rob sees this. Rob; I noticed you touched on working on your development as a driver and hinted about feeling out the car / limiting factors, and I have a recommendation that may be helpful in these regards......I suggest getting some seat time in a Kart (particularly a TAG and a KZ-shifter), whether your reach our to borrow / rent them, or purchase one......I recommend this because it's a "somewhat" more cost effective way to get a LOT of track time, with more limited maintenance / adjustment, and the driving experience is applicable to the absolute highest levels of racing (ie: most cars seem "tame" by comparison)......Based on your statements of where you want the 4 & 3 rotor to be in the future and there turbo-powerplants, I believe the power-band characteristics of these high strung 2-stroke karts is quite similar, as is close ratio gearing w/respect to the shifter-kart & 4-rotor, additionally the lateral grip a kart of that level can generate is on par with relitively high downforce WTAC open class cars........The TAG-kart will teach you carry momentum / have smooth steering & braking inputs, whereas the KZ-shifter will teach you "point-shoot-driving" and chassis control discipline under enormous braking / acceleration, while clutch-less shifting 1-handed.....If my reasons aren't compelling enough, it's what F1 / INDY drivers race in the offseason to stay-sharp & you have an INDY car, soooooo............😉
Keep up the good work!!! I look forward to more track content in the future 👍
