Happy Father’s Day to all of the Grass Rats!
Thanks, same to you sir.
Taryl, in the 1950's my father had a reel type lawn mower that had a kick start. I believe it was a REO brand. I was only 10 years old and it was easy for me to start when i got to mow the lawn. I wish i had that lawn mower today.
I have a buddy in NY that I ship reos too! I'm in Michigan. They were made in Lansing. Awesome little engines!
Thank you for the memories, this kick starter reminds me of the old Briggs and Stratton washing machine engine and later the b&s side shaft engine with kick starter on it.
We used them for our home made mini bike's, because of the convenience and it felt like we were in the big scooter world like that of the Cushman back in the late 50s and early 60s, before those damn Hondas came along 😮
Beep beep, look out, here we come 😊
And a happy father's day to you Tarl ❤
Definitely falls into the category of " just because you can put something on your mower, it doesn't mean you should"
Never believe in instructions that say: you just need less than one tool 🥸😂 greetings from IKEA 🤩😂
You don't have a bad back
I seen a wind.up.and push start on a older mower.
An electric starter would be a better idea.
Definitely not a bad what if you have no arms to pull the rope huh 🤣
Sears sold a mower that you wound up the top and when you flipped down the wind handle it released and spun the engine and started. It worked very nice.
Some Victa lawnmowers in Australia had the wind up and press the winder down to start. They worked well.
Montgomery Ward sold one also. It had a lock lever you slid about 2 inches to lock up the recoil assembly. Then you wind it up, fold down the crank lever, and slide the lock the other way and spin the recoil to start it. We used that mower for 17 years, until we started mowing the church yard. First mow I hit a hidden drain culvert in the ditch that was grown over and cracked the engine block. I about cried when we had to replace it. Best mower we ever had.
Happy Father's day Mr Dactyl, I think it's a pretty decent idea. I'm sure someone can tweak it with the technology we now have to make it work alot better. It would definitely benefit elderly folks that have trouble pulling the cord.
HI, Gary. My Sweetie found the cure for cord pulling. It's called BATTERY powered stuff! Blessings
@@lewiemcneely9143 Hey buddy, how ya been? How's she liking the Battery stuff so far?
@@garyalensr REALLY liking it and hope you're just as outstanding as you've ever been! The Stihl mower is SWEET! She does all her trimming and uses maybe half the battery and cuts it down to one inch. Fixing to get a 42 inch Craftsman battery mower from Lowes. I'm going to keep 2 gassers for spares but looks likes batteries are going to be king here. The way things are going, now's the time! The craftsman is hi-dollar but the batteries stay put and you plug the charger in like a car. Good for this geezer and the younger chick. No battery wallering! And YOU???
Yep it’s called electric start
@@NA-pg4lf And electric run and electric shut down and so on.
After 4 shoulder surgeries if the geometry was right, I would use that. It definitely needs more throw. Perhaps instead of a 90 degree angle between pedal & puller, a 70-75 degree would be more optimal. Might be something to improve on in a future episode.
I agree. I have arthritis in one shoulder and a torn rotator cuff on the other. I could use one of them on my trimming mower when my rider won't fit under the fir trees.
All sorts of ideas come to market but because of no advertising only reach a small sales base and die some need time to catch on and die before they do back before low flush toilets came out a device that cut the amount of water per flush came out at a time when most homes were flat rate no water meter but as a water hauler it could save our customers a lot of water and therefore money I bought 2 and tried them in our toilets on one I could get it to flush on 3/4 of a gallon of water and the other one on 1 1/4 gallons so I went back to see about buying more to sell to our customers but they were gone another product I thought of buying was a gas powered drill and jigsaw a gas powered circular saw no generator needed a year later black and decker brought out their mod 4 cordless drill with the promise of more cordless tools to come and the race was on in less than a year it was obsolete makita brought out a 9 volt more power and run time then more tools circular saws jigsaw Sawzall so why buy a 4 hundred dollar smoky stinky noisy gas drill when for less than half that you could buy a complete set of clean and quiet cordless tools each set soon becoming obsolete with in a year as units with more power came out and then new battery technology came lithium batteries and the one that went from good to bad Dewalt brought out a lithium battery that fit their old 18 volt tools so buy new batteries or a new tool and upgrade all your tools to lithium unlike other brands where to upgrade ment buying all new cordless tool's but they quickly discontinued that for a new set and the new lithium batteries didn't fit the old tools I bought a mod 4 drill and when 1 of it's batteries failed converted it to run off a sealed lead acid battery ment it was corded but the power pack was on my belt and using 6 volts on a 4.5 volt drill gave it more power and a lot more run time then came makita 6 volt system and then 9 volt more power ment more tools and finally I could work anywhere with no 120 volt power needed game changer for the building industry
The old British lawnmower manufacturer "ATCO" used to make a range of 'kickstart' mowers in the 1920s and 30s, but that system was fitted from factory. It actually worked rather well - no ropes, no recoil, nothing like that at all. Instead, it used a pedal and quadrant, which engaged with sprocket type of arrangement with a one way clutch. I had one as a vintage show piece for several years, until I sold on. The engine was a Villiers two stroke, but mine was a bit worn-out, and an absolute pillock of a thing to start.
I think it was because the engines were based on motorbike engine designs. Some of the 1920-30's cylinder mowers also had crank handle start.
Thanks Taryl and company, for another entertaining and informative video. After the installation and demonstration of the step & start it is easy to understand why no one wanted it.
Hey Taryl. I have never seen a "Step N Start" before. That thing is definitely cool! I have seen quite a few contraptions for yard equipment but never a "Step N Start". I also like when they send a love note telling how simple the unit can be installed. Hahaha! Usually ends up needing a huge supply of tools 🔧 to complete the installation. A phone number on the love note is nice however the person on the other end has no idea how to help you! Hahaha! Love the "Mysteries and Oddities" Taryl!
Happy Fathers Day Taryl.
Thank you for todays video on the foot start conversion.
I collect of small engine and lawn mower ads and have one from Western Auto that shows a feature called “Tip-Toe” starting. It is on one of their Wizard push mowers with a Briggs engine.
Don’t they sold many, have only seen it in this old ad.
Thank you for all you and your sons work to record edit and post these videos.
I like it! I also like the battery impact gun on the crank bolt nut!
I think it’s safe to say no one ever made millions off that brilliant idea. I thought it looked great in the nice box it was in 😂
Happy Fathers Day Taryl and to all the grass rats out there. Actually this was pretty cool, some one was trying hard to make a million.
There's nothing quite like that American quality. A hole that needed to be reamed, brackets too short, a pad that falls off. You can't get that sort of thing anywhere else.
@@1pcfred I disagree. Look at today's domestic vehicles lol
This might explain the bent crank problems they bring you from the Nudist Colony . Because it is a Murray I would have been kicking it before that install. Happy Fathers Day
Dam it Taryl --- I still see that Woods Mowing Machine AKA Grasshopper in the yard ----- I'm still waiting on the video showing us how to rebuild one of those Eaton Gemini Hydros , I'll almost bet one side is out on that thing since it's been sitting in your yard so long 🤔🤔 --- I bought some chainsaws and some lots at a estate auction and got a apparatus that makes a chainsaw into a hedge trimmer . It mounts on the bar nuts and has teeth like a hedge trimmer . It's still new in the package . I've never seen one before but the package looks old . But , but , but Taryl with that mower you don't have to bend over to pull the rope to start it ---- well you have to after you cut the rope off .
Hee Haw !!!! Bucktooth Sunday is here again . I get more excited knowing I'm going to wake up to another awesome video than when my wife tells me we're having blackeye peas , mustard greens and gater tails smothered in possum belly gravy for dinner ! (My favorite ) . And Happy Fathers Day to all !
Another type of starter I remember using back in the early 60s was a wind up crank that took the place of the rope starter. Real PIA.
i remember those
I still have a lump in my forearm from one of those.
@@cjack121 They were great if the mower started on the first crank, but one of the ones I used was a problem starter. Lost track of the number of times I would have to crank it, but once it started it was a real blessing as the mower was self propelled and there were a of banks to go up, plus the people paid me really well and gave me a meal.
We had those on the farm. I should have saved a few.
@@johnhooton3286 Just one of many things we wish we had saved.
Thank you taryl for the tour of your shop and the new building. It was an honor and the highlight of my trip from Florida the Indiana to meet you and your son. please keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos hope to get lot more subscribers, thank you.
Man that thing kicked your butt😂 I'm going to put one of those on my truck on my girlfriend and on my dog
Congratulations Taryl, Your video are world famous on CZcams on the Interweb. Job well done fella.
I could see this being useful for someone who's missing an arm and wouldn't be able to hold the bail handle and pull the rope at the same time.
I wrenched my back out once pull starting a mower. When I did it I was like really? I wasn't in the worst of shape at the time. I just pulled on it wrong. I don't know if stomping you can mess yourself up. Probably. But the day I pulled my back out I wished I'd been stomping then. Because I was hurting for like a week after that. Was just this twinge I had going on.
Great job showing and telling, how the step and start works. Good ideal if your motor will start easy yes good ideal , great video see ya next time see ya bye bye.
For someone whit sholder problem or a amputee this idee is golden, many few adjustments on the geometry or not even ..its working like was intended I give a 👍
Shorten the part where you step and you will be able to rotate the assembly more because it won't run into the ground as soon. Shortening it will mean having to step harder on it, though, because the lever arm is shorter. Also you could add a bumper at the bottom of the throw to cushion it so the end of the throw isn't so jarring.
More complicated would be to add a gearing mechanism to regain the mechanical advantage lost from shortening the arm, but would need three gears instead of two so the part attached to the pull cord rotates in the same direction as the foot pedal.
That was going to be my comment, as well.
and a return spring wouldnt hurt either.
Thanks , I love your videos. Always learn something new.
I've been thinking of that idea for years. Thank you for bringing it to the table. Very cool!
NOT BAD, THAT STEP AND START WORK OKAY. IT WAS COOL TO SEE ANYWAYS.
THANK YOU TARYL. OH AND HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TARYL.
Thanks for another entertaining video. I am a devoted fan for many years.
Rating for Step and start (POS) fun to watch the installation.
Like Sunday nights look for your Channel and you always Educate me Thank You Sir Happy Fathers day
The old wind up starters were the bees knees. Possibly, the 'toes goes' if you weren't careful.
Pretty cool IMO. I am honestly surprised that you dont see this product, or others like it on the market today.
Wow! that's really an oddity. Seems like if you have to bend over to press the primer, you might as well pull the starter rope while down there. Or just attach a longer rope to the top of the push handle (gee, I think somebody already did that).
Good day from Ontario. I always thought than Don"s were pretty good fellows LOL Thanks
Love the videos happy fathers day grass rats.
Iv never seen one but it's pretty cool,I like it, Happy Father's Day
There have been times I would. Like to have one on my mower. Thanks taryl and happy father's day 💕
You should do a cheesy 80’s style commercial for this thing ! It be funny for sure !
That's an awesome idea.

HAD ONE OF THESE WHEN I WAS A KID. IT WORKED GREAT!!! THIS WAS BACK IN THE 1960’s
Man I loved your show. This step and start got my mind going. I have been trying to figure out how to get my mower started since I had a stroke I can`t pull the rope any more. If you know where I could find me one of these I would love to buy it. I just wanted to let you know that I will be watching your channel from now on I think you do a wonderful job. I hope you had a great Fathers day. :8ter my friend.
Thats an excellent invention!........ive never seen it before.......thats awesome...original dactal starter!.......your back never hurts again when you start it on this way!....thx for the vid!
That is a great idea!! I'm going to make one for my go-kart 👍🏻
Cool video. Definitely an oddity. Never ever seen one of those.
Probably ended up on the as seen on TV shelf 😮
I think back in the day it was probably a good idea especially for people that didn't have enough arm strength to pull start a mower your legs are typically stronger than your arms so for women or younger kids or elderly people probably was easier to start it that way then pull starting it if it works better than it don't
Great video I’ve never seen that before lol thanks for sharing have a great Father’s Day
Got my attention, they'll have to try it on the MOON and see how well it works! Keep up the good work!!!
Love your videos happy fathers day
Man I love this idea 💡. I have had 2 rotater cuff Sergeys. because i was a diesel mechanic for 22 years and would love to had this after the surgery 😊 great show guys
Besides its design & performance issues, this contraption would make storage of the mower really inconvenient for people who don't have much space and need to fold the handles. When an engine is properly maintained, the regular recoil is sufficient.
might be useful if adapted to big generators that don't have starters . some are really hard to pull start .
Kind of cool!. My old original 1949 Cushman Highlander has one, still works fine after all these years. bought it when I as 14, I'm 77 now.
Can't wait to trip over that every couple of steps. Fantastic.
Hey taryl I'm surprised it didn't take of not a bad idea great video my friend 😀 God Bless you and the rest of the crew by the way happy fathers day and there's your dinner
Growing up in the 60's my Dad had a pusher with a Briggs & Stratton hand crank. You flipped a lever on top of the engine, manually cranked it to wind up a ratcheting spring , and when you flipped the handle back over it would release the spring and crank the engine. Hopefully it would finally start after 5 or 6 cranks sessions. Those were the days.
I figured the lack of length of pull was going to make it sucky. Great video. Nice unit to mount it on.
I gotta get one! Adding to mower shopping list now
Guess if you had 2 broke arms and grass was getting high Love y’all’s show Holla loud Top Grass Rat
They used to have step-and-starts on motorcycles. lol. Strength! GODspeed!
Happy Father's day Taryl.🇺🇲🇺🇲🍻
I wish they would put recoil starters on riding mowers. Only riding mower I've seen come with the recoil starter from the factory is a rear engine snapper. Sucks having to get the battery charger out the day before you plan on mowing if you have a weak battery. Batteries used to be cheap but now they are expensive, and they quality has really went downhill. When I had a Snapper, I just pulled started it. Never bought a new battery for it. The battery I put on it lasted one year. So I refused to buy another one.
I got a Murray riding mower which is a backup mower and transferred the recoil starting system from a blown Briggs off a Snapper to it. Works just fine.
It is actually something that could of caught on if there had been enough advertisement or endorsement by engine or mower manufacturers. Thanks for sharing. I actually know several older folks that love to mow their property but have a hard time starting their mower. Nice .
New one on me . Doesn't lever enough rope .Thanks Taryl !!
I like the recoiled that you wind up then push the button to spin motor. We had several on the farm back in the 70-80's. They are not exactly safe but worked extremely well.
I always like the mowers with the crank handle on top. Seemed pretty effortless..
i always like the mowers that had someone else pushing them......🤣
I think this is a great idea, and did a cursory look to buy one. There you have it.
Nifty stuff man!!
Pretty cool idea....happy Father's Day Taryl.
Gotta love this guy!😊
Step and start would be more effective if you step on the lever lightly to get the motor in the compression stroke and then stomp it!
For the first summer after my shoulder surgery, that might have been a handy attachment, except I think my electric start probably worked a little bit better🙂
I GOTTA have a go at this , a bit of a geared up version perhaps lol
I think it's pretty smart invention 👍👍
I like it! Probably good for someone with a bad shoulder that can tug a lot on a pull rope.
They used to have small engines to power refrigerators and washing machines (Maytag?) for those who didn't have electricity, and they used a similar "pedal start" system to start those engines. Great video!
I think Briggs had a better mechanism than this one.
Very cool, great idea. I'm going to steel it and build a couple for my push mowers.Getting to be a old fart and this will save my back. HAPPY FATHERS DAY Y'ALL.
Not sure about it being easier, I am a fat 64 year old fart with bad knees and kick starting it seems kind of awkward to me.
I'm a 65 year old with bad back and good knees for now.
So, how long can you mow with that bracket added to the mower before it vibrates, gets loose, and parts end up out in the weeds?
It looks like what you might find at a goodwill or thrift with no instructions or diagram to figure out what it is or how it goes.
I suppose if you injured your arms or shoulders or back, a foot pedal start could work.
You could expose the crankshaft nut through a hole nowadays and start it with an electric tool and socket.
If you already have such things.
It's a good enough idea to have the pedal for the handicapped person who can't use a start rope.
They just need help periodically from a mechanically inclined person.
Like when it vibrates and falls apart.
Happy Fathers day Taryl i hope you got something better than a step and start
Pretty neat idea. I like it!
Awesome idea!!
My grand gather had a push mower that used this wind up crank to tension up a heavy spring that would hold potential energy until pressing a button that will then release the spring tension to spin over the engine no pulling a rope but winding it up wasn't any friendlier on the back over a rope so I can see why the spring cranking mechanisms didn't stay around long.
Wow what a treat! Thanks TD🦇🦖
Hello Taryal, have you ever seen that lawn mower engine that you would wind up or crank up and then hit like a trigger, then the mower would start? Back lik, in the late sixties, early 70's when I was young.
I used one of those as a lad. It was a Lawn Boy mower. Crank the thing up, then press a button and away she went.
Engine color was baby blue at least on ours. Flip the crank over, was on a hinge, turn the crank and it would tighten a spring . And I think it would release when you stowed the handle. I was very young, but even my ma could start it.
I once had a rotovator/cultivator with a wind up starter mechanism like a watch spring on the top. When you wound up the spring then released it it turned over the engine. It didn't seem to turn over the engine fast enough and was difficult to start.
Lil Johnny gonna have a tuff time startin Gwampas old Wizard mower with them stubby legs.
I have a kick start from 1954.. it's a cool way to start the mower
Kind of a good idea. I'd never seen one of those myself. Cheers! 🍻
I watch all of your videos from south Carolina
Great idea. Great video
Briggs and Stratton made a wind-up starter for their push mower engines for a brief time. You wind up a crank on the top and then push a button to start the engine. It’s an interesting design that never caught on. I always thought it was pretty neat.
But I’ve never seen a kick starter for a lawn mower before. That’s a new one to me.
I'm pretty sure they showed that in a previous video.
Yes I remember them , our neighbour threw away lawn mower that recoiled itself after running I guess I should have kept it. Thanks
Yes I had one of those
Love the Slipknot joke. Absolutely my favorite band!!!!
That was a very interesting idea that I never heard of before. It looks like it needs to pull the rope a further distance to work better. Also too bad there is no way to have a model that does rear bagger/discharge.
You'd think that most mower manufacturers would offer some sort of system like this. Certainly, they could perfect the winding start that was available back in the day. Us old geezers can't bend over. Pull starting is hard on the shoulders, too.
This is a good idea, I wish kick starting was more common. Its much easier to hurt your wrist or elbow trying to start a stubborn engine
It reminds me of the kickstarter on my friend's BMW R69.
I like the step and start
Good one Don !
Happy Fathers Day , Taryl ~~~wonder if that could be used on minibike ?
Defiantly one of my favorite bands
That is definitely an oddity lol .happy Father's day taryl 😊
Thar was an amazing thing - never heered of or seen one of them thangs! Truly an oddity! I remember there was a kit available for a while to convert your mower to start using a drill. Kindly along the same lines, but hard on the wrist instead of the foot.....
Happy Fathers Day Grass Rats.
