With the new Supply system, paratroopers might have a use besides being surprise tourists for capitulations. Does dropping paratroopers onto a railway cut the supply connection? If so, dropping some paratroopers onto a few sections of railway before offensives might be an easy way to cut down on losses and force your enemy to de org.
That would be very cool if it's true, you could even do that before naval invading to make the the landing easier, which is very similar to real life.
Considering rail gage conversion time, it could be useful long term, as the AI would have to reconvert the rails, allowing a large window for offensives, depending on the implementation.
Upon watching Yesterday's stream, I see that I am not the first person to suggest such a thing, around the thirty minute mark.
Haven't played the DLC yet, but one of the Dev Diaries mentioned a Scorched Earth button you can use to destroy railroads in "territory you occupy" for a few CP.

I wanted to cry for joy when I saw that doctrines no longer were researched, instead bought. This'll hopefully free up research slots for more exciting things. Now I can finally research all those random naval mechanics đ€Ł
Your research slots instead go to researching artillery and radar because they give tank modules. Although if you really want to go crazy with the tanks, rush the jet engine research as it gives a truly op tank engine module.
@@efulmer8675 If you had any naval or serious air fighting to do, you'd be researching radar anyway. And well, who doesn't research at least tube arty and either AA or AT?
The turbine engine is... well, it sure helps make your tanks go fast. It also DOUBLES their fuel consumption.
@@magni5648 True, the fuel consumption is a significant downside, but I've generally found the gains in reliability, armor and breakthrough to generally be worth it.
Gonna lay low on multi games for a while and just do some testing with my friend and figure this out.
I hope they do some balance adjustments with the supply system. I have played a few games and watched some short playthrough videos such as yours and everything has a very common theme. Everyone's construction queue is just building or repairing railroads and sometimes building supply depots and that is it. I had hardly any chance to build factories except for prewar. Only to realize not building up the supply lines for major fronts was a mistake. The idea of reducing the amount of factories isn't a bad one, as it should result in less over all units in the game. However, if the ONLY thing you can build is supply related construction it is going to cause games to be extremely long. This is also going to cause playthroughs starting as minor nations extremely difficult as you pretty much can't build factories during war, unless you are purely on the defensive. Previously, the best way to play minors was to conquer other small nations around you to build up your industry quickly, but if you can't conquer another nation in a timely manner due to supply issues, it makes that method near impossible. The only way you can reliably push is to constantly build up railways as you push, so if your industry is crap, building those railways is going to take forever. It really makes me wonder how much this new supply system was tested. Many nations have insanely reworked focus trees and dozens of new events, some of which were seen in this video. Kind of makes it seems like most of their time went into development and very little was spent actually testing. This is just speculation of course, but the supply system just seems so significantly out of balance to me that I can't think of another reason.
Sadly, a lot of time is indeep spent on the focus trees instead of game mechanics. I'm pretty sure one of the NSB dev diaries mentioned that these trees take a lot of work to get right. Most players want huge and powerful trees with fancy RPG mechanics and believable alt-history, so that's what Pdx focuses on. I feel like they improved the DLC quality with NSB, but it's still not great. And my monkey brain preordered it anyway because "preorder bonus neuron activation". Eh.
@@FLUX.2226 I havent played all the focus trees, but I did enjoy Estonia's. I think they have a good concept here, it just needs some balancing. This has the potential to be my favorite DLC for HoI4 of they can fix it.
â@@touchlebutt3807 It's probably one of the best DLCs, yes. And personally I think the minor nation trees that come with main DLCs are most of the time quite nice (though I haven't played as the Baltics yet) - partially because they are more compact. But Stalin's paranoia game is something that I don't like, it puts too much focus on playing another game within HoI4, much like all of the BftB trees. I've been playing HoI4 since since WtT, so I'm used to focus trees being more straightforward and easier to understand, not having a unique mechanic for each country, and being less powerful overall.
Makes it more realistic
They should add industrial companies that give build speed for railway and infrastructure.
This system looks like it desperately needs some balancing.
Its only just begun!

@@DaveFeedBackGaming Dave no, the balance is already dead.
@@johnathanjarisch7323 how do you know itâs only been out for like 4 hours

I'm glad you figured out to invade down the railways because that poland invasion was painful to watch. I can't wait to see what you do with the new mechanics though
The troops in Moldova had that one supply depot in the center that was going along the river to probably Sevastopol, since now apparently supply depots on rivers can give and receive supply along them
If you motorize your supply depot it will help with supply issues immensely. Just click the little horse icon when you click on a supply depot or shift click the supply depot.
Had to like with your final audio choice haha such memories
Iâm lukewarm on the supply rework. Iâll learn it eventually but it seems WAY more harsh than is reasonable for balancing reasons. I like the basic concept but Iâd ask for what you invest to be a better value. With time we will learn though
Especially seems bad as many nations start IMMEDIATELY with supply issues.

Can't wait to make a light tank out of the highest equipment, and max out engine to see them zooming around Europe at 60km/h
From playing the soviet civil war a fair amount, im pretty sire supply depots are more important than railroads when it comes to supplying troops.
Railroads just dictate how much supply reaches the depots and what route it takes.
I wonder what drove them to replace the overrun text? That's one of the most satisfying things in the game. The helmet just doesn't do it for me. Well, if they don't patch it back in, I'm fairly certain modders will save the day.
Yeah, the low-contrast helmet icon doesn't catch the eye in nearly the same fashion as the bright red OVERRUN!
I didn't even notice that until it was specifically pointed out.
@@IceMaverick13Ironically the new railway guns still have the red overrun when you overrun them.
My concern here is that with the amount of trouble even experienced players seem to be having with the new system, how badly is the AI going to suffer once we get the system down and the AI can't?
That seems to be a persistent problem with Paradox games, they keep adding more and more layers of complexity that the AI just can't utilize effectively, making them more and more trivial to defeat for players who can use the systems to their full advantage.
To be honest, the AI I fought against as Estonia were pretty powerful and had good supply for the most part. The only AI I know that had problems was Finland, my ally, but I quickly figured out that you can build railroads in your allies territory.
I think the AI improved a lot in the patch.

As a casual player, my only complaint with the new supply system is that it seems a bit overly punishing. Most offensive tactics are more or less equally viable)

I mean, it kinda makes sense that good tanks are much costlier and therefore you have to take it into account when optimizing your designs. It's better if simply making "the perfect tank" doesn't work in all situations... after all, it wasn't the best tanks that won the real war, but the good enough, incredibly cheap ones.

Grinder is a great choice for a soundtrack
While working on a tank designer rebalance / expansion mod i found a joke in the game file about riveted armor "#soft_attack = 1 # that's when rivets shoot back because they got dislodged by the shock. That was in fact the first reactive armor."
So the reason the encircled units didnt take attrition is because of supply depots which give supply to nearby units until the depot runs out
The Grinder soundtrack from RA2 at the end was most suitable, this was one hell of a grind. I still have mixed feelings about the logistics change, it might have made the game too slow and grindy
All and all looks pretty good the little tank image though is odd and doesn't really line up with what components have been used.

How effective would following the railroads be for supply? I'm not sure, but I feel like if you orientated your assaults' to follow the railroad networks and or rivers, you'd have an easier time with supply, and then all the areas void of railroads would end up being encircled. This is just a thought, I'm downloading the DLC right now and I'm going to test it out. It seems like it would make sense, but knowing me and my ideas it probably won't help anything lol
Could you please share your results? Your question has intrigued me as well.
This is generally the case based on the gameplay I've had since the update. The enemy supply hubs are your primary targets now, and following the rails is a sure way to reach them while maintaining better supply.
It's also good for when you're using train artillery as their 10% debuff is pretty nice to have with green air.
