    PFAQ (Predicted FAQ)
    Q) Why is there a picture of a cheese sandwich on screen at the beginning?
    A) A while ago I coined the phrase ‘A cheese sandwich video’ to describe a simple video that’s exactly what it is and nothing more - just like a cheese sandwich is a sandwich containing cheese.
These types of videos don’t take weeks to assemble. They’re often a brief demonstration of an item.
If you see the cheese sandwich image pop up at the start of a video - it's a sign to expect a less complicated and elaborate video. Sometimes all a product needs is a simple demonstration - and that’s where the cheese sandwich video comes in.

For such a small-scale release, and what is essentially an indie film, I'm pretty impressed that they managed to keep the cost down to only $79 and still do the packaging like that.
Some companies would charge that price for the same amount of content _without_ the packaging.
It's definitely a neat product, though with the exchange rates all over the place right now and the rip-off that is the eBay Global Shipping program, I doubt I'll end up with one. Nice of them to put the documentary up for free as well, though.

It is a LCD like those used in mobile phones, and a chipset from Mediatek, designed for mobile use, just without the associated added chipsets that have the phone functionality. Likely just has a lithium cell with a protection circuit, a small board containing the main processor, a flash chip for media storage, or a SD card slot for an external card, some voltage regulators for the processor and LCD voltages, and a connector for the LCD itself. Then a hall effect sensor to detect the lid is closed from a magnet glued into it, and a small class D amplifier to drive the speaker, also a phone part. Keyboard a set of tactile buttons on the board back, where the cardboard can touch them ,and nothing else.
Shows that the sheer volume of mobile phone production is such that the entire lot can be obtained very cheap, even in low volumes, as a premade item. You also see the same displays in advertising displays in shops, where they are almost a throw away item, as they are rarely going to have updated content made for them, just send a new unit and USB power supply with, and throw the old one away.

At the time, DCC was the only way to record and reasonably store digital audio due to the MP3 compression codec not being available yet. Some of the things that caused the DCC format to flounder were the litigations initiated by the "Music" Industry in an attempt to slow its adoption. I ended up ripping out the electronics because I figured I could repurpose the screen!

The video postcard which has been integrated into the disc box here has made its rounds over a few trade shows. Runs on camera processor Allwinner V3S. Might have an LCD which is a vaguely compatible copy of the one found in the Playstation Portable all those many years ago with 272p resolution. The V3S doesn't really need a multilayer board and is compatible with a variety of really cheap manufacturing techniques, if you don't necessarily need it to fit within the smallest space possible.
I do want one of those video postcards to tinker around with someday.

My company uses these often for promotional use - specifically coincidentally, to send to CZcamsrs and social media influencers, they average $10-15/ea for these "video postcards" including the hardware (rechageable via USB mini) printing of the outer wrap, and packing in choice of methods; this one however with all the inserts, foil printing, etc. must've cost a bit more (usually for labor) really great use case! as you can tell - the file naming is standard for 'kiosk video players' used in retail, which was primarily what these sized screens were used for. Often times the screen is double-wrapped in two layers of paperboard. both the outer custom printed one, and an internal one to protect the player and ship them to the vendor that does the printing and insertion. google 'video postcards' to read all about this kind of device, they're quite readily available, just little known.

Oh Jesus, this type of packaging. I work in the mailroom at a medium sized business in the US and we get one of these per year from a large, international conglomerate that wants us to invest in their equipment. Not naming names here but you know who you are.
    PLEASE STOP.
By the way, I just chuck these. Took one apart to see what makes it tick and found a Chinese website that sells customized packaging like this for a few dollars per package. It's crazy what technology has become. Ten, fifteen years ago this would have been the highest of tech. Now it's annoying mail clerks as junk mail.

As a physical media collector, mainly DVD/Blu-ray movies and video games on optical discs this is a pet peeve of mine. As nice as the packaging is it's perplexing it doesn't have actual disc holders for the discs! I hate this type of thing when I buy something nice but I have to smudge the discs to actually use them!

    • @JeremyHeiden
      @JeremyHeiden Před 4 lety

MadFinnTech I completely agree. I hate touching the disc physically almost as much as I threatens to break arms if anyone touches a computer screen lol. It was so impossible to design this and make two discs fit this packaging vision. Of the hundreds of options ‘this was the only way I could make these work with the package and the player mechanics. I made sure to step up however, like with all things that I do, quality is paramount, and only the best of the best is used. We use M-Disc. They are actually made of a stone like material and withstand everything. This thing is bulletproof. I sympathize with you, about touching the disc, but I think this option offers the minimal amount of thickness, full disc protection, with the flap up, touching the printed side of the disc to slide it out, then holding the hub and the edge allows the disc to receive the minimal amount of prints. I used thermal printers here, so even alcohol cleaning of the printed surface will not harm the image.
