The Dust Extractor link is broken. But a great video. Thank you.
Hey Stumpy. You never cease to find killer tools & your presentation of said tools is beyond compare. I'm simply saying thank you.
KILLER TOOLS!
Fun fact the 3m xtract dust extractors are re badged starmix ipulse dust extractors. In Europe alot of tradesmen consider starmix the best on the market and in comparison to the festool dust extractors it out performs them because of the dual filter design.
I was about to say this. It looks identical to a Starmix ipulse. Similarly the Metabo dust extractors appear to be rebranded Starmix as well
Mafell is also a rebadged starmix. Makita, flex and milwaukee are usually a rebadged nilfisk.
Huh I work in a tool store, I thought the Xtract looked awfully familiar! But I should've known sooner!
Yup same tool they just added the pneumatic portion which is smart and awesome but otherwise that thing has been out for like 10 yrs
Please
Happy Stumpday
I've been using a Bow featherboard for about a year now. Love it. I chose the one with the 'fingers' on both sides and use my giant Magswitches to hold it to the saw table. Never have I had a problem and I keep it magnetically attached to the front of my saw when not in use. Very handy and wonderful to use.
I've been using Zebra pens fir about 15 yrs myself. They have an incredibly comfortable no slip grip and unlike a lot of the competition, you get to use ALL the ink! If I ever hear they're going to cease production, I'm making a run on them!
Love my fit finder! It also has magnetic feet so I can stick it to something in my shop easily and not worry about it falling behind something.
The iGaging one is quite interesting, because they basically took the Incra idea, simplified it in some ways (no holes for 1/64ths), yet also added new functionality with the angle option. They are also much thicker than the Incra ones, which are rather thin and flimsy. I have been using my Incra 6in for a few years now, and it is an absolute essential for me on every project. I will have to consider picking up these ones to compare, and just to add to my collection. I really like the angle ability.
One of the possibly unintentional benefits of the bow featherboard is the curved spine. It makes your beer belly turn into a third hand by using it to set the desired depth while you tighten the knobs on the router table. I like to put my board in place and use my belly to push the featherboard in place so I can get the desired pressure and make it even as I tighten the knobs.
I have been using the exact same pen and pencils for years now. Absolutely love them and their reliability!
Great start to the day (here in the UK). Always enjoy your films, thank you. Have a great day! 👏👍😀
Yes! The Zebra pen! I've had the same 2 for over a decade. I never lend them or let them off my person in a classroom or workplace. It's not that they're expensive or hard to get. They're just exactly what they need to be, so I cherish them greatly. And after so long I'm kind of attached to them.
Really awesome tools, James! Thanks!!! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
thanks for keeping this series going . I always learn alot from them
Always love your cool tools. Thanks
Cool tools is a favorite view. Keep them coming.
Gonna make my wife watch this so she’ll know I’m not the only one who obsesses over dust collection lol - I swear she looks at me like I’m crazy sometimes haha
every +3 decibels equates to doubling the perceived loudness. Going the other direction, -3 decibels is perceived as half the loudness. When looking at from and amplifier point of view, every +3 dB equates to 10 times more power required to create the sound. For example, if you measure 60 dB at 1 watt with the sensor 1 meter away from the speaker/source. To get 63 dB requires 10 watts, 66 dB requires 100watts and 69dB requires 1000 watts. Going the opposite direction to reduce requires 1/10 the power.
That very Zebra pen was omnipresent in my flight suit sleeve pocket when I was active duty. Freakin’ loved that pen, particularly because it didn’t need to be right-side-up to write. I think the ink barrel is pressurized, so it’ll write at any angle, if memory serves.
@@Tolohtony I remember hearing the same story. 😂🤣😂
Great tools all but especially the featherboard. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks for the video, always enjoy watching!
Spent the day hooking up my new, used heavily once, Makita GA9071X1 230mm 9" grinder to Henry and VTuff vacuum extractors via ash can to eliminate hot metal spark risk. Clumsy but it works. Next thing to save up for is heavier duty M-class extractor or even higher for brick and concrete dust. Been clearing all sorts of cement, concrete, and other rubble from daughter's new back garden (yard in US speak). While it would have popped up due to subscription, it was well timed
fantastic! I ordered the squares and featherboard. thanks so much!
Master Yoda of all YT woodworkers bringing good stuff, like always! :)
Bow feather board. Wow. For that price, amazing. Any multi-function tool that includes anti kickback help, totally sold me.... I'm all in.. appreciated
Thanks for the great tool review James. 👍
I bought the graph gear 1000 after watching one of your other videos and fell in love. They’re awesome pencils!
Amen on the Zebra F-301s. A pen with a name like a fighter jet! I'm in healthcare and it's all I've been using for ~15 yrs now. Inexpensive, better than anything else if you write a lot of notes or whatever.
I bought that bow featherboard 5 years ago or so and never used it until recently. My favorite is the double stack for resawing
we have three (possibly four soon) of those pocket hole machines at the custom cabinet shop i work at and they're honestly amazing. it's really telling when i have to go back to my kreg at my home shop
Thanks for another great video do keep them coming. I also have been using Zebra pens for nearly 30 years as a friend of mine showed me they write upside down and so are used for NASA missions and another really useful feature is they even write on glass when you need to mark glass!
I have made a purchase and have added a couple to put on my Christmas list. Thanks for doing this!
I love watching your Cool tools series
I have used Zebra pens for the same reasons for closer to 40 years. Very seldom have a bad one. Thanks for the cool tools ideas.
Good info. More stuff that I want more than my money. Keep 'em coming!
Cool tools James. Thanks.
Pretty awesome episode. I'm going for the FitFinder and the Bow Fetherboard. I may get the iGaging squares too but I have tools that get that job done. Thank you!
The FitFinder is the coolest little tool; Will surely alleviate the most frustration for the buck.
Got a link for that router bit set (the V bits).
I’m a weekend warrior with a tool addiction. I bought the Caste USA TSM-12 and I look at it thinking why did I buy it, then I use and I’m so glad I did.
I love your videos! Thank you so much for the tips!
Bing, bang, boom. Four items purchased (not the $5K pocket hole monster!). Thank you Stumpy for the early Holiday gifts from me to myself. Stay safe.
I’m more of a fan of the Graphgear 500 than the 1000 because its hexagonal barrel with removable clip lets it work as well for mounting in compasses and jigs. I am also a sucker for aggressive knurling.
I’m as acoustics professional, 5 dB isn’t 3 times as loud/as quiet. In terms of loudness a difference of 10 dB is twice/half as loud and 20 dB would be 4x as loud. 5 dB is clearly louder and the difference between someone talking conversationally and someone speaking at a raised voice/ approaching yelling territory. Yes acoustics is weird, but one interesting thing is that it often provides amazing insights on airflow efficiencies and longevity, as it’s the turbulence flow, that will commonly create the noise. Awesome review, I will definitely be keeping 3M in mind when I’m ready to upgrade, thank you! A quiet shop is a safer shop people, and always wear your hearing protection!!
I worked at a custom cabinet shop for years and they have that same Castle pocket hole machine. I've done thousands of pocket holes with it and it works great. Compared to the small kreg jig that I have now it takes a fraction of the time to do a pocket hole
Thanks for letting me in on these great tools
One more awesome thing for that featherboard is that it fits wide rail table saws. My hedgehog didn't work at all on my contractor saw. But this one did.
I agree, I bought one of those feather boards two years ago and absolutely love it. Thanks
I’ve been looking for a sharpening system I’d actually use (my current wet stones are a pain) and didn’t cost 3x what my chisels did, so just ordered the MPower SBS kit. Thanks for the reviews!
That 3M vacuum looks a lot like the HILTI ones we used to use to handle concrete grinding/cutting dust. I wonder if it makes the same big thumbing sound as it knocks off the filter while running.
Not to gild the lily, but combine that featherboard with a Magswitch and you'd have an even cooler tool!
I don't know about y'all, but this is the most expensive video for me EVERYTIME
The most useful and entertaining show of its kind. Peerless!
We use the Castle production machine in both of our shops. Unfortunately, ours are older models and don't have the nifty hinged top with the gas assist. That new design is awesome!
I got a bench top pocket hole machine and it's quite the upgrade! I went with the lesser known brand Safety Speed, but after using the castle bench top one, I like the safety speed better in every way except the main cutter is not nearly as good. But I bought the castle bit for it and now it's gold!
Love your work 👍
Thanks James, really like the cool tools. Fred.
Point worth noting perhaps on the pen/pencil thing - I don't use either of those, but the ones I do use are basically the same body - which has meant on occasion I've marked up bits of wood with the pen or written in my logbook with the pencil - have two different shapes for the two functions is *definitely* a good idea.
I also love the zebra pen; I call it "The BEST Writing Instrument". I wish someone would listen to me and come up with a pen kit I could use to make pens with the Zebra Pen refills
I agree on the zebra pens , 25 year over the road retired now truck driver , thats all i used in my log books , they had to be perfect , i messed up one time in 25 years on that book , no accidents either ..i busted some fenders and lights , but it was my truck , i paid for it ( that was kind of a accident , unreportable though ) now i play with my bucket truck , it was supposed to be a hobby ..but it's pretty close to working again
I like the Zebra F-301 but broke more than one, carrying in shirt pocket and leaning against concrete or steel during routine inspections. By the time I retired as a Hydroelectric Operator, I was using the F-701. Now that I’m out of the plant and don’t use a pen constantly, I carry a cheap “tactical” pen that requires a couple of twists to expose the tip, and will accept quality refills. But the F-301 fine point is nice for writing.👍
I have looked at that feather board. I think it will be on the Christmas list this year.
Thank You James!
Great Info!!! Thanks!!!! 😀👍😎
And wow what a lineup!!!
Good video. Some interesting tools in this one, even though some are a bit pricey
I will say, since you are now a regular CZcams content provider, I keep waiting for you to review the "cool tools" you use to make your videos - like the cameras, tripods, editing software and whatnot ...
That featherboard is such a clever design. I hope it is easier to find in the UK than MicroJig's cool tools!
3M's sounding like the sanding Holy Grail for me 😄
Just a quick note to let you know I just purchased the Bow fealtherboard duo - thanks for al the great educational videos. Larry
I used this device for the first time this eve... I made a very nice discovery.... I was making miter slot runners and needed to cut approx 1/4" off of a 7/8 piece of wood. I decided to use the featherboard and as the cut finished, the waste piece was very gently pushed backward towards me (yes I was using a riving knife) .... the featherboard stopped the movement of the waste wood causing it to gently slide to the left side of the blade on the table. Granted this was not a true "kickback" but it made me realize what a great tool this is! Hopefully I've explained this clearly enough that it makes sense to you.
FWIW, if you'd rather not deal with Amazon, the Bow Featherboards are also available from Lee Valley Tools, both the US and Canadian sites, for five bucks cheaper.
thanks for showing your choices
Very awesome information!
Great video!
Thank you for this video. I know woodworkers would love the discounts in the video if they want to buy one of these tools.
Cool tools indeed. I'll show the boss that feather board. He might actually use one. Your pocket hole machine is great. I love castle's shallow angle. You seriously need to adjust the base on your new machine. That wobble on every cut in the video is not good for the pivot mechanism as it is swapping cuts. Love the videos. Please continue.
For SPL 3db=slight change 6db= noticeable change 10db= twice as loud. Three times as loud would be somewhere between 15 and 16db
Can you please expand on WHY you like supporting the small businesses as you often mention? Thanks for doing what you do!
Small businesses are usually owned by families and they support their local communities. They are often more approachable, more willing to stand behind their products and far easier to work with.
I don't need any of these tools. But I wish I did because I want them. Love seeing the innovation.
The iGaging T-Marking Squares are cheap but $10.80 to ship, Amazon is $46.95 with prime, free shipping. Save a few cents!
Thank you Jaames.
Doin the stumpdy dance over that sharpening system 🎃
If you like the zebra 301, you need to try the 701. It costs more but the barrel can literally last year's and refills are cheap.
We had a lot of problems with that exact pocket boring machine at work. It would start to fail to drill the hole for the screw (would still bore the “countersink” portion). That one was sold and a new castle was purchased which uses regular motors as opposed to rotors (old castle would require router replacement 1-2 times a year), this one also (only a month or so old has started to have the exact same issue. When they work they’re awesome, when they start to experience issues they are a huge pain.
3m is making great strides in sanding especially in the automotive and industrial areas, woodworking benefits are merely ancillary to them, they don’t even promote they’re best sanding mesh for use with wood. Anyone interested the festool is +$400 is over the 3m Xtract model here.
Bought the 3M Dust Extractor and 6" Premium Sander based upon your recommendations. 💯
That's quite a setup! Enjoy!
I used Zebra pens back in the late 80s and early 90s doing triplicate credit card forms. they were legible, and the pens literally worked flawlessly until the ink ran dry. - unless i did something like dropping it on its point on concrete I think I killed a cartridge that way, once. might have to go back to them.
Zebra pencil in the shop. Graphgear for drafting. I love them both. Gonna try the Zebra pen.
I got lucky and snagged the Porter cable version of the bench top castle pocket hole machine at a flea market, it's awesome, only downside is is only for ¾ material.
I really like that featherboard.
Next month's Cool Tools should have a white beard, and red outfit. Nice selection of tools.
Hey Stumpy great video! I'm curious if you could share the dimensions on that 3m dust extractor? They don't seem to be listed on taytools or 3m website. Thanks in advance.
3m vacuum and sander looks like made by flex tools, maybe with a some mirka cooperation too .
With the thing mentioned with the sander - decibels are logarithmic. Getting from one unit to the next requires double the amount of power. A 5db reduction of volume isn't just a little bit, it's 1/32 the volume being applied to your ears.
Zebra pens. One of my all time favorites!
I really like my bow featherboard, I just wish it was a magswitch!
I just had to say it. George Carlen used to do a bit about lousing stuff and how no matter how much no one wanted it people would insist it was stolen. The punch line was "who stole my nude pictures of Ernest Borgnine". Hope that made you laugh.
Hi James, I always look forward to these video and have bought some of the tools you have shown in the past.
The problem I have and have encountered again today is that when I click on the link the item is unavailable and not known when it is going to be back in stock. This time it is the BOW Featherboard
I have tried Amazon UK as well with the same results.
It is a shame as I would have bought the feather board.
Great video James.
Take care.
Cheers, Huw
The Bow featherboards show in stock when I click the link.
@@StumpyNubs Thanks James. I have now managed to find one here in the UK.
I have always used Zebra pens and pencils. Dispute the fact I make custom writing instruments. Great video, all these products are very useful. Thank you for sharing this with us today, stay safe happy and healthy, from Henrico County Virginia
Looking at the shop vacuum. Are there any adapters to connect these to various sizes of both shop vacuums and the tools, cause I struggle to find things that fit together. It's very frustrating.
How well does the pen work in cold weather? Below freezing. I work snow removal in the far north. Temps well below 0°F are common. I have e.d.c. items on me at all times. If I jump out of the cab to shovel a front walk or talk to a customer my current pen freezes up and takes a little time to work again. How would this pen perform?
So important to get that dust, thats why there is piles of dust on the carpet!
Not piles by any stretch. Just a little dust from tools that don't have good dust collection, which I haven't vacuumed up yet.
You know its a good video, when I start reaching for my wallet!!!!! Thanks Stumpy.
