- "Chevalier, Mult Estes Guariz" - Knights, Salvation Is Much More Likely - is a medieval crusading song calling the faithful knights to follow King Louis on his Crusade. The enemies of God are heaping insults upon the True Faith. Monasteries are burned and pilgrims killed. The faithful are called to join King Louis, for those who do shall have no fear of Hell. Salvation is more likely for those who die figthing for God.

We are in 1147.
3 years before, in 1144, the City of Edessa (Rohaïs in old French) had fallen.
Louis the VIIth "the Young" king of France since the death of his reknowned father Louis the VIth "the Fat" in 1137.
The Pope, Eugene the 2nd asks Bernard de Clairvaux (later known as St bernard) to call for crusade in France and Germany.
His preaches were so successful that the king of France and the Emperor Conrad the IIIrd decided to go to holy land.
What the song dont say, nonetheless, is that this second crusade was a total defeat.
It couldn't be mentioned in the song, since It was a song sung before this crusade.
Lack of cohesion and trust between the Crusader Lords at this time, and unlike the First Crusade, the Turks were better prepared.
However, the enthusiasm of this quest can always be celebrated, no matter what the outcome. This is what is lacking in the Western world today, the enthusiasm of faith.

The song is about Louis VII, not Saint Louis IX. Jaufre Rudel, sometimes, is considered the author.
where do you get this from? every source I find attributes this chant to St Louis
@@inhocsignovinces7713 It's a common mistake, but they are wrong.This song was composed after the fall of Edessa (1144), when Louis VII was reigning. The song itself tell us about the Siege of Edessa.

@@CantosCruzados you may be right, but this song specifically tell knights to follow Louis on his crusade to take back Mount Sinai/Jerusalem. As far as I know Louis VII never went on a crusade to take back any of this, but St. Louis did. So it would be strange to attribute a crusader song to a king who never went on a crusade to begin with.
