I remember one thing I learned from Etho about 9 or 10 years ago. To paraphrase it, "Never be afraid to use blocks that aren't normally used for structural materials" In that case, it was clay. I think that was the start of Etho's "Von Sway". Interiors were one of my favorite things to do back in the day before I got a bit burnt out on vanilla (then played modded for about 5 years before getting back into 1.13.). I had this "large" build (I think it was 17x51 blocks in size - large for Minecraft Alpha, but the layout is actually similar to Grian's "Dream Mansion") that I made back in Alpha. Interiors were actually more difficult then, especially the library, but I did use ceiling borders and painting on dirt walls (wasn't afraid of using dirt for texture, thanks to Etho! I needed a brown texture). I remember debating with myself about using double-thick walls and floors (7 block tall rooms) - ultimately, only the floors were double thick, but I can see where double-thick walls are good for castles, or other medieval buildings. Now with 1.16, and all of the new blocks since 1.13, I'm kinda getting the itch to make a new version of it.
Now I just need to find a structure mod to copy things from one save to another.

    How I do my interiors:
    Bdoubleo100: I don't. End of video.
Aside from the Hermitcraft joke, this insight is actually really useful, since there are many people (including me) who just CAN'T do interiors, like, just don't know what to do.
That's actually a reason why I always why away from having a medieval/village base and go for a Futuristic base.

Thanks for this, Bdubs. Interiors are the one thing in this game that still give me trouble, especially small scale interiors. This helps a lot.

  •  Před 4 lety +34

Medieval houses, especially those belonging to commoners, rarely had internal divisions. They typically only had one or two big rooms. If there were any room divisions at all, it was the kitchen that was separate from the rest, but there was no living room, or sitting room. It was not at all unusual for ten people to sleep in the same room. A cellar or an attic might be used as storage.
Only big houses, like castles and mansions had complex interiors, and even there, the living space was often confined to one big room. The internal divisions were mostly a consequence of the building having multiple functions other than just being a residence for a nobleman and his family and servants.

A medieval theme is different from a medieval setting. A medieval setting would preferably require full historical accuracy, but all he was implying is that the general block pallet, coloration, and over arching feel was similar to what would be commonly associated with the medieval style. Not to mention that in that time period it wasn’t completely black and white, rich and poor. There were many people with sectioned houses whom were not considered rich.

I like how this is different from most building videos where people are more explicit about their thinking process and instead just show small examples that leave it up to you to implement in your builds which - most of the time doesn’t turn out the best. Building his not about the blocks. It’s about your imagination.

Hey Bdubs just wanna say thank you for all the amazing content you make. I found your channel about a year ago and you have quickly become my favourite Minecraft CZcamsr. Your videos are amazing from the music to the editing to the amazing builds you somehow manage to make with all sorts of blocks. In just the year I've been watching you I've learnt so many building tips and you have made me a better builder. You are also really funny and I love seeing your antics on hermitcraft. You inspired me to create my own channel where I make let's play videos in my survival world like building with bdoubleo. You were the first CZcamsr I ever supported with patreon and I'm so glad I did because you put so much work into that resource pack. You are also so a genuine nice guy and I love watching your vids because I can just forget about the bad day I've had or whatever and they make me smile. Keep up the epic content and stay safe! 😁👍

Another tip for ceilings: if you make the base level of the ceiling a top placed half slab. That way you can still use slabs for the trim or beam effect, but it won’t take any more space (like if you want to keep the trim but have furniture that reaches the ceiling like a bookshelf. This also allows you to use upside down stairs to add even more detail to the ceiling as the top half will look like the normal ceiling but the bottom will be on the trim layer but only half as thick
