    For those that are asking what a "P plate" refers to, here's a general breakdown of the New South Wales, Australia licence system.
    Basically you begin with your learner licence after passing a general knowledge test. You must be 16 years of age to apply. You have a restricted speed (90km/h up from 80km/h due to a system overhaul), you must have no alcohol in your system while driving, and must be supervised by a fully licenced driver at all times, who must be below their own blood alcohol limit of 0.05 grams in 100 millilitres of blood. Yellow plates with a black "L" must be displayed next to the front and rear number plates. This is held until you are both 17 years of age and have completed 120 hours of logbooked driving, 20 hours of which must be completed at night.
    After that, you are taken for a driving test and if you pass, you are given your Provisional level 1, or "P1" licence. If you pass the test in a manual vehicle, you are permitted to drive either manual or automatic vehicles. If you pass in an automatic, you are restricted to automatic vehicles only for the duration of the P1 licence. Speed restriction remains the same as learner level, as does the zero alcohol limit, further restrictions include power limits on cars. This used to be a blanket prohibition of anything turbocharged or supercharged (with the exception of diesels) and anything above 6 cylinders. It has been recently amended to be based more on a power to weight ratio basis. The NSW Government has a full list of prohibited vehicles for provisional drivers. In place of the "L" plates, white plates with a red "P" are displayed next to the front and rear number plates. This licence must be held for a minimum period of 12 months before taking a "Hazard Perception Test" to proceed to the next level. P1 drivers are not permitted to apply for any other licence classes above "C" class (cars or any vehicle up to 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass, as well as any vehicle under that GVM that seats up to 12 adults). P1 drivers also are prohibited from towing trailers over 250 kilograms unladen weight.
    You then proceed to Provisional level 2, or "P2" licence. Speed restriction is increased to 100km/h, zero alcohol remains, if you passed your driving test in an automatic vehicle, at this level you are now permitted to drive any transmission you choose. Power limits on vehicles remain the same. In place of the red P plates, white plates with a green "P" are displayed next to the front and rear number plates. This level of driver is now permitted to apply for licence classes up to Heavy Rigid (HR), allowing them to drive anything up to a rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes. Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes. Towing restrictions for class "C" licences are lifted. The P2 licence must be held for a minimum period of 24 months before advancing.
    Then comes the final test. P2 drivers undertake the Driver Qualification Test. Once passed, the driver obtains their full licence and all restrictions are lifted, blood alcohol limit becomes 0.05g.
    TL;DR: New South Wales provides an extremely long journey to your full licence (anywhere from about 4 years, realistically).
    Whew. Had no idea I still remembered that much of my driver's handbook.

      actually in Australia, it's Learner's (yellow L plates, max 80km, held for 12 months plus driver must complete 120 hours of driving with an experienced driver. this is recorded and signed off in a book which is then taken to Service Australia, shown, before driver is allowed to sit the test for the red P's.) then Red Provisional (red P plates) for 3yrs (max 90km, driver sits for test before moving onto Green) then Green Provisional's (green P plates) for 2 years (max 100km, again, another driving test before moving on to a full licence ), before you get your black licence (full licence, max speed posted limit, so 110km). then there are also gold licences (given to those held licence for 5yrs with no fines or demerit points - me lol) and all the trucking licences.(LR (light rigid - small trucks), R (Rigid), HR (heavy rigid), HC (heavy combination). (and the bus drivers licence is different again). 🙃

    To be honest with you I see the same amount of this sort of thing from open drivers as well. I've been involved in three accidents since learning to drive. None were my fault and all involved people with a full license. The first was tailgating on the highway, I slammed my breaks when a kangaroo hopped onto the road and the car behind me ended up in my back seat. The second was being sideswiped by a car which didn't check his blind spot. The third was a car going 110+ on the highway crossed the centre line, almost caused a head on (I was lucky to swerve in time).
    I am currently one my green P's and have never lost a point on my license. I think people notice P platers more because they are easily identified. While people ignore the bad driving of others.

      @@jeffhale2278 A plater is a driver who has just passed his or her driving test and HAS to abide by stricter laws. I believe this is mandatory in America and as I've lived in Australia for a while, I know that p platers driving cars or on bikes face very strict consequences if they make mistakes. If they are on a bike, they can't lane filter and must stay in the main line of traffic. In a car, they can't even carry alcohol for someone else and if they speed they can lose their license. If they don't stop before a stop line and stop on it they are fined as an experienced driver, and the fine can be as much as $260 Australian dollars

    Hmm. The cops wouldn't have known he was missing his rear P until they pulled him over; I'm betting they nabbed him for trying to overtake on the left. I guess you're lucky they decided he was the bigger catch, because speeding up to prevent someone from overtaking you is also an infringement. (I'm assuming this was in NSW?)

    • @ScottsCarcameras
      @ScottsCarcameras  Před 7 lety +2

      Hi , 1 the police would have know he was p plater when they scanned his plate before they pulled him over , 2 no it's on illegal to overtake on the left ? 3 No speeding up when someone is overtaking is not illegal on a Muiltple lane road , yes NSW , and no not illegal , police wouldn't have been interest in me as no laws broken :)

    • @ShadowinaCave
      @ShadowinaCave Před 7 lety

      Hi 1) The licence plate of the car tells them who the car is registered to, not who's behind the wheel 3) Yeah, it's an infringement, and you say so yourself on other videos of yours, quoting a fine and the points awarded. The police couldn't have known the driver was a P-plater before looking at his licence, so what is it you think they pulled him over for?

    • @ScottsCarcameras
      @ScottsCarcameras  Před 7 lety

      The police may have assumed he was driving and pulled him over , the car may have beeen u registered or he may have oustsanding tickets etc , could be many reasons,
      What do you think is an infringement the overtake to the left or sped up overtaking ? And if you know I quote the rules and there fore know the, why do you think I'm wrong , plead provide the rule number then ?

    I can imagine driving on the right side of the car. It's like sitting in the passenger seat when someone suddenly slides the steering wheel and pedals over to you. I can see myself sitting in a car that I own on a warm summer evening talking with my friends standing outside of it. Sun just starting to set. I want to describe what I am thinking but it has too much detail. Then I think of the same thing with the driver's seat on the left. It just doesn't seem as nice. I think driving on the left and right side of a car are 2 completely different experiences. Experiences that I would like to experience myself. Same goes with the roads. When I think of a British or Australian urban street, It seems so much nicer than an American one just because of the roads.

    • @codboroks97
      @codboroks97 Před 9 lety

      I don't think it would be that hard to get used to driving on the other side of the road, but I have never driven on the left side of the road before so I wouldn't know.

      Tholaran97 Australian roads are rather bad mostly, to much distance to cover and not enough money to pay for them.
      When I was in the US years ago it took me no time to get used to driving but it took me ages to get used to being a passenger, crossing the road was scary as fuck :)

  • @Billbill80s
    @Billbill80s Před 11 lety

    This is Australian - not British. 'P plater' is actually nothing but a slang term for a provisional license holder - typically one would hold one after learning to drive (L plates). A provisional license is a restricted permit to operate a vehicle under certain conditions. As far as I know the main restraints were, top speed and alcohol intake (both lower), possibly more these days.
    I believe there are similar licensing systems in place in countries other than Britain or Australia, too.

      Scotts Car Cameras
      It was called the Pontiac Bonneville. I found out about this when I visited a dealer and was shocked to see "Import papers" taped to the window (it's required in the US and it clearly said "Importer: Holden Cars Australia"!)
      All they did was remove the badges and put Pontiac badges and maybe switch out a few interior body panels but it was definitely a Commodore. It was not cheap, they cost over $50,000 US! Bloody hell!
