MEALWORMS VS WHOLE WATERMELON
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 18. 01. 2022
- We already have seen mealworms eating various things, like apples, oranges, cucumber, but I was curious if they could handle a whole watermelon. This wasn't an easy task, because you can't just fill up a bathtub with mealworms and drop a watermelon in it. That way the ones on the bottom would suffocate, and basically, only your top 1 inch (or so) layer would be live mealworms, the rest would be just laying on the bottom. So if I can make only a maximum 1-inch thick layer of mealworms can they possibly finish a whole watermelon, - I was wondering. Just like as with the McDonald's cup experiment, no one has ever tried to feed a whole watermelon to mealworms, so in order to find out the results, I needed to do it myself. I must say I wasn't too surprised.
Next to the mealworms vs whole watermelon time-lapse, I also added some other clips you asked for in the comments, such as mealworms eating lemon, octopus, salmon, and coconut. You didn't ask for it, but since these worms enjoy live greenery, I fed them a pea plant too.
I'm glad I can also show you the hatching process of these small creatures in macro. That part was very interesting to me.
Another small update-slash-news, I'm forced to use watermarks on my time lapses from now on. I didn't want to, because in my opinion, it takes away from the experience, but I also have to protect my time lapses from people who take it without permission and act like it was theirs.
I considered the framing of every clip, so the watermark is not obstructive, I hope you will still enjoy my videos.

Interestingly, when the melon started to smell, the mealworms most of the mealworms tried to keep their distance from it. Who would have thought even they can be "disgusted" by rotten fruits.

I wonder. Do they have a system they use to eat each item? Do they have a hive mind that controls their movement? Are they free to move as they please throughout the feast? Is there a mealworm ranking system? Would they eat each other if there wasnât food? I have so many questions đ
czcams.com/video/w_YaUQJAQSU/video.html .. ..
Hmm im not sure
HIVEMIND!!!!
Mealworms and other maggots and such are generally solitary. They donât really communicate with one another like how eusocial insects do. You can just imagine them as a bunch of hungry babies that just want to eat stuff. Once they develop into beetles, theyâll disperse out and will probably never meet each other again unless mating
@@derpychicken2131 so... The oposite of hivemind. Very informal!

That's too bad about the why you have to include the watermarks and I don't blame you for doing it.

Always love seeing more content from you! I'm curious about the statistics side of things on your channel, eg. how is the retention , does it drop inbetween fruits, does it drop more after the thing in the title etc
So I did some research, and apparently mealworms can digest plastics. Is this true? Because that would be awesome to just be able to feed some thousands of worms.
Great question, actually not all plastic is consumable since each plastic is made differently with harmful chemicals to the worms. But yes they can consume plastic
Photo Owl has done a video of them chewing on styrofoam before now. Mine seem to love it also.
They have microorganism in their digestive tracts that allow them to break down some plastic
Plastics arenât nutritionally complete for mealworms, but if you supplement the styrofoam with something else like carrot chunks, it seems to be good for them.
@@noyoucant If they really can consume plastic they are one of the most important organisms to exist...We still don't know a way to dispose plastic correctly so making mealworms consume some of the plastic wastes would be really good for the environment.

The leaves try and grow, unaware of their unfortunate fate
lol
Mealworm 1: Hey man, are you hungry what's in the mood?
Mealworm 2: Yes. I can eat.
So I have a question. What do you do with all of these mealworms? They all grow into beetles eventually, what do you do with them when they become beetles?
Well if you let them breed, they lay eggs which hatch into the next generation of mealworms. Some reptiles would probably eat the beetles too.
Well I guess they could breed them to get more mealworms for the next videos, and maybe sell the excess to people who own reptiles/ birds as pets that will eat the nealworms
