If you are new to BJJ, this video will get you familiar with the primary positions in Jiu Jitsu. BJJ can be daunting to learn due to the sheer number of techniques. The best way to learn a new skill is to start with the broad strokes, so you have a basic, general understanding of what is possible. We cover the five primary positions of BJJ both offensively and defensively. After watching this video you'll have a pretty good understanding of the basic game. Enjoy!
First I would like to say I really like your approach to BJJ and life in general through your videos. My academy was zooming on May 15th with our founder Mauricio Tinguinha and guest Jeremy Arel. The discussion was about BJJ learning systems. One of Jeremy's points was the lack of consistent terminology across BJJ. I know there are thousands of positions, attacks, counters, etc but it would be awesome if a universal name was associated with each movement. I am not the man for the job but after following you for the past few months I believe you may be that person. I know many already have names but take side control for example. Side control for one school may be knees up and tight where the next may be single or double leg sprawl. Then you also have numerous arm positions when in side control. Not sure if this is even possible but was just thinking out loud. Brain bending rant over. Thanks
Amazing! Thank you.
This is what I've been searching for ever since I started jujitsu a few months back and I have to say that no one on youtube has explained the basics better. You make sure to capture all the angles and you move slowly step by step. Thank you immensely for your hard work and dedication!
Coheed bug?
Thank you Sir. I’ll be 68 years old next month. I’ve always wanted to learn some type of martial arts, but I know once I’m committed it’s no turning back. I’ve been retired now from the Marine Corps since 1994 and County Government at San Diego. I do have some different disabilities that over the years they have become a hinder to deal with but I deal with it. Is 68 years of age too old? Thanks again Sir.
If you’re at all new to BJJ, then let this video be the North Star in your BJJ journey. All of Rick’s videos are great, but this one really stands out to me. I’ve watched countless hours of beginner BJJ content and nothing is as concise and informative at this piece. Very well done, Rick. Thank you for the time and extra effort involved in creating this stuff. It’s a huge help to us BJJ knowledge seekers. Deeply appreciated, Kyle
I also love how the student flows with the demonstrations, allowing Rick to execute the moves by the book. As I get started, I love to work with people like this, helping each other accumulate slow, meaningful reps as we build smoothness and muscle memory. If I had my way, I'd work a new move thousands of times at this pace, or even slower to start, until it is perfect. So much more effective than rushing into trying to muscle each other or "win." Maybe one day we'll have an AI-robot that will practice moves with us on repeat hahaha
Most complete bjj guide on CZcams
This has quickly become my go to checklist as I work my way through the maze that is Jiu Jitsu- thank you for taking the time and effort to put together such a succinct and learnable video.
The fact that this is free is insane. I recently started training and I try to watch this before bed every night and I get to BJJ class early and watch it in my truck before going in. While knowing it and applying it are are totally different, I find that even in a half-hour video, just picking one small move or technique each time I view is so worth it!
even me, decided to watch it once every day, so it becomes muscle memory, and while applying it is a whole different story, haveing this in mind is a great way to navigating jiu jitsu
Had it worked?
definitly, the sweeps not so much as thier more difficult to execute, but the submissions and positions from top position works very well@@user-uc9fx4ru7p
its been a year already...how are you doing?
@@dragosristici hey thanks for asking! Got my blue belt and still training usually four times a week and got my whole family training now!
My ONLY regret about this instructional video is not to have it seen it before.
Now for me is like a bible under the arm.
Every where I go I have it with me.
thank you for this detail and easy mode to understand the techniques.
You posted the title for "Newbies" but I believe this is a go to see video at any level to keep you sharp.
Osss
16 classes in BJJ and THIS is the video that I've been looking for. Thank you!!!!
I'm 51 and have just begun my BJJ journey with my two kids: 11 and 13. I've gone through a lot of BJJ videos on YT, but this is the one I've found most concise and resourceful. Thank you for preparing this goldmine of fundamentals and making it available to newbies like us!
Hi Jalapablo: How true! Me too, just started at the age of 48 with my son and my daughter's boyfriend. Like you, I too find this video amazing: practical, doable, and game chnager for beginners! Good luck with your journey!
I watch this 2 to 3 times every week since I started BJJ a year ago and I learn something new every time.
51 years old, one class into my BJJ journey, and just found this video... bring on the second class!
Same situation man, I'm just 26 years younger haha
Awesome. Jiu-Jitsu in 34 minutes! Wish I had this years ago
Same for me.
This is, hands down, the best BJJ video on YT for beginners in BJJ. Thank you so much sir!
SPECTACULAR
I was a somewhat advanced white belt in 1995 (consistent 18 months of BJJ) and had to quit due to work commitments. Got quite depressed as I thought I had forgotten everything I knew - but your EXCELLENT demonstrations brought everything back and showed me the knowledge was still somewhere in my head all this time. Thanks Rick!!!
This was great! I wish I had it explained this clearly as a white belt. Would've made so much of a difference knowing why I was doing certain moves!
This is such a simple, but effective presentation style.
So many great practitioners spend time explaining, then executing the technique, or stopping and starting as they show and explain. This format, showing the techniques two or three times while explaining what is happening in a voice-over is far better.
Perhaps it is better to stay with more granular, lengthy expositions for the advanced techniques and innovations, but as an introduction to BJJ this takes some beating.
I look forward to seeing more.
Probably the best instructional bjj video I have ever seen. No useless filler, kept my attention, and easy to comprehend. Thank you.
Just a very small correction. Omoplata is shoulder blade, or scapula, in Portuguese.
Not in portuguese. In greek.
Omoplata is shoulder blade or scapula in Portuguese and Greek
Enjoyed this instruction very much! I just started BJJ training 3 weeks ago. My 60th birthday is next week. I did wrestle in middle and a bit in high school. I did a tiny bit in college, but it wasn't on mats and there was no referees. I am a chiropractor, so I jokingly say that I wrestle people for a living. I have no plans to compete, but I would like to one day have my own BJJ gym. First chance I get, I would like to drive up to Laramie and see your place, it looks great!
I’m on a similar journey as you are only starting later in life on both.
4 weeks ago at 49! Love reading more stories of others starting older! Recovery time sure is something to get used to haha!!
43 years old, second class tonight. Been spending a LOT of time on the BJJ CZcams rabbit hole. This might be the most practically informative video I've seen yet. And def. one of my favorite BJJ channels so far.
Nice fundamentals video, and loved the Dark Souls style background music.
Added to my favorites and studying this as much as I can until I have it all hardwired into my cranium. One of my fav BJJ channels so far!
This stuff is more than enough for a year’s worth of learning.
Amazing job of simplifying basic Positions with techniques Professor Ellis , and much Credit to your Professor Dean and his Professor Harris for passing along this level of technique with simplicity. It’s finally starting to click for me after 7 years of working on it at age 57 , Thanks Rick!
One of the most beautifully crafted BJJ vids for white belts that have an appreciation for the fine arts as well as the martial. 🙏✌️🌹
I'm 59 years old, and this is my go to video. Thanks Rick
Attending my second class this evening. CZcams is a source of both good and poor content on BJJ. This video stands out like a diamond in the rough. Will be referring back to it as I slowly progress in this art.
One of the best and well done videos I’ve seen in a while. I spend a lot of time on CZcams trying to learn, I loved the pace of the video, the editing was well done and I love your calm and detailed view of the many options. I look forward to seeing some more expansive detail on some of the individual videos. Very well done. Please do more!!
This is great!!!! Thank you!
This is exactly the kind of video I needed. The demonstrations are the clearest I've seen so far, the camera angles are chosen perfectly to show all the little details, and the black and white gis on white mats make everything so easy to parse. The video is also comprehensive enough for a beginner to start rolling. I'm rewatching it for the third time now to get ready for my next session. Thank you!
This video is purely awesome! I just started JJ (2 weaks in) and bust my toe, so i got 20 days off. This really helps to not rust much
just put some tape on it, its just a toe :)
Thank you so much for making this

Thanks for such an awesome video. I am gonna watch this over and over.
I am and have always been a Muay Thai Fighter, coach, gym owner and even promoted fights for 15 years. We were an MMA gym so all of our grappling was No Gi and what I spent years incorporating wrestling and Anti BJJ tactics so we could strike. I did get a unique experience to train twice a week with Suyan Quieroz of the old BTT for six months in exchange for private pad work for his boxing and Muay Thai. I even prepped him for a MMA fight and cornered him by his request. He transformed me into a positive attitude towards BJJ. Gi work, well I've never done it but I stepped away in disgust for ironically 15 years because the MMA game, having a fighter in the UFC and internationally travelling for another promotion every two months for a year and a half burnt me out. When I promoted fights, I did five shows and lived up to every word I said, promoted evenly matched fights which pissed off hometown heroes and the last straw was a fighter who was well known as a 'fighter' did personal training and coaching. He never had a single MMA fight but had the look and the BS to pass himself off as a fighter/trainer. At the last minute, he decided that he was going to pack the house so much that he wanted 50 percent of my profit. I said, no you can go F urself and I hope you get your A34 beat. Within a three month period, I closed my gym, my promotion and put all my gear into storage. Never laced up until two months ago
A BJJ gym with a legit black belt from the Rigan Machado lineage opened up a school 10 minutes from my house. They also opened up and are growing a Muay Thai program. I decided I had unfinished business and a circle to complete on a positive note. I have years of grappling but it's the old school 1985 Rorian Gracie garage knowledge. I am so impressed with how far the game has evolved and the limitless techniques. I have been doing only the MT classes and am only a student. I will never coach again unless it's just helping on occasion because I needed to reach down and chase Mastery. Both MT and BJJ are limitless in how far Mastery can go. I avoided BJJ clases but they keep asking me to roll. So I ordered BJJ gear and am waiting on it to come in early next week. Two of my former students are black belts now and own successful academies.
I love your content, especially the idea of flowing and giving up any ego to push my way to a tap ( most likely, I will be tapping for a month or so religiously ). The big thing is that I am turning 50 this year and have some injuries that happened in the mid 2000's. Disc Herniation, now arthritis, etc. So doing MT has exposed the really weak parts of my body. My cores is a mess from sitting at a computer for again the 15 ears.!!!
I am truly excited have access and desire to go back to square 1 in BJJ and learn and hopefully get some color in the next decade and help thin me out and get fit. I hate weights and used to love running. I only cycle now and my workouts in the Cass County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club has been enought to lose 14 pounds since the first of January.
No one will likely read this but I felt like vennting and I have gone back to my time with the Brazilian and what he taught me in terms of what BJJ is, the respect and dedication to mastery. I know alot more than my body will likely be able to do. But your old man BJJ is what I need to be watching and listening to , to develop my game for being a senior around locked and loaded 20 somethings. Thank you for your content. I think you are mastering the production of good material in an area where there is little to no thought or content on!!! Dan
Fantastic review and great content. Thank you 🙏
Thanks Rick! Very, very, informative, for this newbie!!!
Golden content!
Awesome video! Wish you guys had more content. Watched every video on the channel in a nights work
Beautiful and skillfully done. Thank you professor for all the great videos you create for us
